How to overcome fear of death?

Transcript: A very dear friend of mine is completely consumed with cancer and she is very, very, very, ill. Is there anything that I can do, or she can do, to come through this? Come through means? Get cured? Yes. More diapers? Get better. Get better, get better. Now I am not talking with any disregard to your friend, but I want you to understand, people need to die. When and how is the only question, isn't it?...

... So if death comes to us, yes we will do everything possible to save ourselves. But if it goes beyond that, let us learn to die gracefully. Let's not fight with it and fight with it like endlessly, you know. It's a horrible way to die. The way people are dying in western countries is really a horrible way to die. Even though they're 85-90, staying in a hospital with full of pipes and needles all over them, this is not. It's okay if you die two years early, what's the problem? You die peacefully and gracefully, that's more important, isn't it? See death is the last thing that you do in your life. Shouldn't you do it gracefully? We must learn to accept death as a part of our life. We are not wishing death. But when it comes, let us learn to go through it gracefully, you know. If there is a possibility of saving ourselves, living beyond that, that is fine. But what I see in all the geriatrics homes in United States, many people are living beyond their death just because of medical support. And it's such a torture to themselves and to everybody. You should see the way, in some of the homes, they're being treated. Not because of anything. The people who work there, after some time they get irritated because this dead body is walking around. They don't understand anything, they've forgotten everything, they've like lost all their senses because they've lived beyond their time. If there was no too much medical input, they would have gracefully died at a certain point, isn't it? There is no sense in stretching it one more month, one more month, one more month. It doesn't make any sense. But, life is not understood that way. We are thinking of always stretching it. So if somebody's body is broken beyond redemption, let's learn to die gracefully. Let us make the person understand, it's okay, it's all right, you know. We're all in the queue, aren't we? So you are ahead of me, isn't that great? In any queue, you want to be ahead of everybody, isn't it? So I'm not trying to make fun of somebody's illness, but we should understand where one thing stops and the other thing begins, isn't it?

Why for many people every age is a problem?

Transcript: Every age is a problem. No, no I'm talking about the ages. Stone age was a problem, iron age was a problem, bronze age is a problem, computer age, serious problem. Isn't it so? Middle ages are serious problems, modern age is immense problem, teenage, another problem. I hope you had a normal birth and, you were born normally? So if you were born normally, you were born like this and slowly grew up and...

... somebody counted your age and you also passed through 13, 14, 15, which you are referring to as teen. This is just a certain developmental stage like an infancy, like childhood, like adult, like adolescence. Adulthood, old age, middle age, whatever. These are all different. We're trying to segment it, but essentially this is a physical journey of a body. Tell me one phase of your life which is not really a problem. Some are suffering infancy problems, some are suffering toddler problems, some are suffering childhood problems, some are suffering teenage problems, some are going through middle age problems, some are going through old age problems, some have transcended all problems. Yes? If you look at it in this context, every phase of life is a problem. Then death is the only solution. If you look at every aspect of life as a problem, what is the solution? Death is the only solution. Now, the moment you identify every phase of life as a problem, unconsciously you start seeking death. Please know this. For yourself and those around you. You do not know this but you are creating an ecosystem in your mind where the solution is to be free from all this. You came here to experience life. Instead of calling these different facets of life, you're calling it different problems that you have.

Are you suffering your past? Is your memory and imagination out of control?

Transcript: The difference between you and an earthworm, which is right here, beneath you right now, is just that you can remember almost your entire life. ... which set you apart from every other creature, these two faculties are of memory and imagination. So when you say something from the past comes and grabs me and I suffer, past is not suffering. You cannot suffer the past because it does not exist. Nobody can suffer that which does not exist. What you're suffering is your faculty of memory. What happened 10 years ago, you can suffer. What may happen day after tomorrow, you can already suffer. This does not mean that you're suffering a yesterday or a tomorrow, that's out of question. What you're suffering is your memory and your imagination. If we take away half your brain, I think you'll do quite fine. What you're asking for is an evolutionary downgrade. If I made you at least a monkey, if not an earthworm, you would be quite happy. Today you got the mango. Yesterday what happened, you're not bothered. So essentially, you are asking for an evolutionary downgrade. Tell me how much we need to turn you back, accordingly that much of your brain will have remote. We have doctors in the ashram, you know. If we downgrade you in an evolutionary scale, you can't remember what happened yesterday. You have no bother about tomorrow because you can't imagine what is tomorrow. Maybe you will be quite peaceful and happy. But what's the point? You have definitely removed a problem, but you have removed all possibilities. That's a crime.

What’s the solution to addiction? | Sadhguru at Columbia University | #7

How to handle grief of losing someone dear?

Transcript: Let us understand this. This is not to belittle anybody's loss. But I want you to understand this that grief is always about loss. Loss means that we lost something. It is not about somebody's death. People can grieve loss of possession, positions, or even professions. So it's essentially about that an individual human being lost something. When it comes to people, if you lose them to death, the significance...

... of this loss is that it cannot be replaced. Possessions can be replaced, positions can be replaced. Money and wealth can be replaced. But when we lose a person, we cannot replace. So the grief becomes more profound in this case. This is happening to us simply because we have built our persona like a collage. Who we are is because of what we possess, the positions that we hold, the relationships that we hold, and the people who are in our lives. If any one of these things fall out, it leaves a vacuum in our persona. This is what we're suffering. So it's very important that our relationships come from the basis of our fullness. Not as an instrument to fill our life with a relationship. If you use a relationship to make yourself complete, then when you lose it you become empty. If you form a relationship because you want to share your fullness, then there will be no grief. When we lose somebody very dear to us all this may not work. This looks like trivializing one's loss. So this must be cultivated throughout our life. That who we are is not determined by what we have in our lives. Who we are decides what we have in our lives. This must happen to every human being. This is what spiritual process means.

How to get out of depression?

But if you do not bring the fundamental responsibility in every human being, that their physical and mental health is their business. If you do not bring this from an early age, you will see a lot more people will go off. Don't think everybody is pathologically ill. No. Those who are pathologically ill, without medication for periods of time, they may not be able to come out at all. Some of them will never come out, that is also there. That's a different matter. But we're talking about all the fringe kind of madness. Which all of us have. Something goes wrong, I can also drive myself into depression. I can also drive myself into depression. Something that I want doesn't happen, everybody is capable of driving themselves into depression. Isn't it so? Is it possible or not? So what you're saying is depression is not a choice? I mean, is that what you're saying, you think depression is a choice? Please understand. There are some who are pathologically ill. It gets them inspite of themselves. But many of them push themselves into it. Suppose you get very angry, what is the expression you use? I'm mad at you! So, consciously, willingly, you're getting mad because you get some results in the society. If you keep trying it, because the line between sanity and insanity is so thin, if you push, push, one day you will cross. There are many, many, many people in the world, who need not be ill. Both physically and mentally, not just mental illness I'm talking. Both physically and mentally, they need not be ill. See right now, for last 50 years, some millions of cardiac surgeries have been done. Today surgeons are clearly telling you, if you go off red meat, you eat the right food, if you exercise, you will not come for the surgery table. Is that against your cardiology? Why is psychology such an insecure profession? Absolutely not. There's a certain diagnostic criteria. So I might be sad, I might be extremely sad, but that does not mean that I'm depressed. I'm entitled to my sadness. See. Please, who doesn't know this? Do I look so simplistic that I don't understand seombody is sad and somebody is depressed? But is it possible that many people push themselves into depressive states at certain times in their life? And the same people, also came out in a determined way. Is it there? Thousands of them. Is it there or no? Many of them. So, if I say it is open, everybody need to end up with chemicals. Maybe it's against a particular profession, but we're talking for humanity.

What is the one hope to cling to when you are fully shattered?

Transcript: When he's fully shattered, what can he do? The question is, do you want to allow yourself to be full shattered? That's the question. And many things that don't work out in your early life, you will see later on, it is a great blessing. Even if you're put through the most horrible situations, either you can come out, using that experience, as a better human being, or you can use the experience to become...

The more things hurt you early on in your life, the wiser you should have become, isn't it? But unfortunately, most people become wounded. This is simply because they just need an excuse to turn their own intelligence against themselves. That's all. Especially if the world around you turns against you, is it not very, very important that your intelligence stands up for you?

Why are even successful youth like Sushant Singh Rajput committing suicide?

Transcript: Suicide is not a pleasant thing. Not at all a pleasant thing because for a human being to make... see when somebody dies, commits suicide, we are just thinking oh, he committed suicide. It's not like that. You must look at what psychologically that person goes through to come to that decision. It's the most horrible part of one's life where somewhere, they feel so trapped. Either by physical situations,...

... financial situations, or emotional situations. So absolutely trapped when there is no other way. This is when they take that kind of violent exit which you call as suicide. And, if we, if someone tries to kill somebody, that somebody has some defense. They can fight, they can run, they can protect themselves, some resistence is possible. But when you start hurting this one, this is the most helpless life and it is the worst kind of torture that you can do is to torture this one. Because this is an absolutely helpless life with yourself, isn't it? Somebody else has some defenses. So suicide need not be seen in terms of statistics, one hour they are dying. Even if one person commits suicide, it's a human concern. It must be a concern for the whole humanity. Why is this happening? You must understand in this country, in 2017, 7,600 children below 15 years of age have committed suicide. Below 15 years of age, when they must be bursting with life and wanting to live. Below 15 years of age if they want to commit suicide, what is it? We are somewhere driving ourselves to a certain desperation. One big cause for all this is education system unfortunately. It's the schooling system which is killing people. Because if you get 98, you are no good, you know. People will ask you where is the other 2%? So, apart from this, there are various other things. Economic things are there, emotional things are there. Various kinds of things for a human being. Essentially, simply because there is no clarity about life in some way. See, youth means, it's life in making. Youth, the most significant aspect of youth is they are full of energy, they have huge amount of energy. When I say energy, after all our life is a combination of a certain amount of energy and a certain amount of time, isn't it? So youth means an exuberant energy. But, most of the time the problem with the youth is they don't have the necessary clarity, nor balance. If only, if you could bring 10% more clarity and 10% more balance in their life, then the way they are right now, this energy would translate into something fantastic. Because if individual genius has to unfold, the most important thing is there is balance and clarity. There is a way to bring clarity to life. You have energy, if you bring clarity and balance, you could be a wonderful life early on, fanastic you can be. But if you have energy and you don't have the necessary balance and clarity, you could become a disaster right here. Both for yourself and the world as such.
