What Happens After Death?
Sadhguru tells us that in yoga, the body is seen as five layers; annamaya kosha (physical body), manomaya kosha (mental body), pranamaya kosha (energy body) - these three are physical in nature. The next two are vignanmaya kosha (etheric body) and anandmaya kosha (bliss body). Sadhguru says - "When someone dies, we say, “This person is no more.” That is not true. The person is no more the way you know them, but they still very much exist. The physical body will fall apart, but the mental and pranic body go on, depending upon the strength of the karma.... If you dismantle the karmic structure one hundred percent, you merge with the existence."

Neither scientists, nor philosophers have been able to figure out what death is - that is why it seems so mysterious. Sadhguru says - "Body is life and death – the spiritual process is about yourself, which is neither life nor death". So, in a way, it is only the body that dies, not you. The simple reason that death seems so profound and mysterious is because you have had a 'memory loss'. If you remembered about your past lives, death would no longer be mysterious - isn't it?

What is Samskara and the Significance of Death Rituals?
Samskara is used for two aspects. One is, the genetic memory that we carry; memory coming from previous generations. Another is the rituals that are performed after one's death. These two meanings are connected. Whether the memory that we are carrying through are genetics is a bondage or an advantage for us, simply depends on how much distance we are able to create with it. The way to create this distance is through yogic practices, and through death rituals. Death rituals are not for remembrance, but to distance ourselves from the genetic memory of are parents.
