It is not that a few spoons of honey that you're taking is putting weight to your body. It is just that it sets off a certain reaction in your system that your absorption rate is such that you tend to gain weight. So, honey, it has different types of impacts on the system. If it's consumed raw, it has one kind of impact. If it's consumed in cold water, it has another kind of impact. If it is consumed in warm water, it's a different kind of impact. We want to consume it in warm water, here, because we want the system to open up. If you want to integrate the system just for health. Somebody is feeling, what, anaemic. Anemia means, on one level, the blood has lost its iron. That means you lost your steel. Okay? You lost the strength in the body, you'll feel exhausted. Simply exhausted for nothing. Because once the necessary iron is not there, your ability to carry oxygen through the body is less. That means, your body, your heart, your brain, everything will be on a lower level of function because you don't have enough oxygen. So, to take care of this, one of the simple things is, you consume a little bit of honey in warm water on a daily basis. And, you will see, slowly the RBC content will go up. If there's more oxygen in the blood, suddenly you feel a burst of energy. Suddenly, everything is active. The rejuvenation system in the body is going up. The dead cells are being replaced quickly. The level of inertia that you feel in the body is much lower. The level of intertia that you feel in your mind is much lower. So consuming honey will bring a certain balance to the circulatory system. Which is very, very essential for a yoga practitioner, because you're pushing the body in certain ways. Up and down, up and down the trees. And till evening, there is nothing else. As you harvest honey, whatever comes on your hand you lick that. So in a day almost more than a litre, litre and a half honey you're taking in. When you come back in the evening, there is some cereal. Usually it's called jowla, that's jowar or, you know, it's like maize. Maize or ragi or something like this. Their main staple diet is honey. And you drink this 3/4th of a litre of honey, and whole day you're so active. But there is no hunger, you're just fired up like that. They live on this. They're called honey shepherds. Their diet is honey. Honey is one of the best things that you can consume. Psychological stability, physical well-being, vitality. All these things can be greatly enhanced simply consuming daily honey. Honey is the only substance found on the planet whose chemical composition is very close to that of human blood. We change a few things, it's almost like blood. Daily consumption of honey can do a lot for your health. Especially people who have excess mucus problems. It's very good for your heart, it's good for your brains, it keeps your mind alert, and it's highly energetic. So daily consumption of honey can do a lot. The best state of restfulness happens to you when you are in a state of abandon. So when it comes to sleep, do not think what position and how to sleep. Being in a state of total abandon is the best way to sleep. But, you also mentioned direction. When it comes to direction, because of the magnetic pull of the north pole, if you put your head to the north in the northern hemisphere, there is a tendency for putting pressure upon your brain. We know this by experience. But it's been studied and identified that there is a natural movement of blood towards the brain., if you put your head towards the north in the northern hemisphere. As you know, as if you're anaemic, your doctor will prescribe you with iron. So if there is that much iron in your blood, the magnetic poles naturally pull it. And, also the spin of the planet affects it. So it's best, especially the older people should not put their head to the north and sleep because it'll create a certain pressure. It is possible, because of this excessive pressure, in older people it could cause haemorrhages. More than anything, it'll lead to disturbed sleep. So, it is best not to put the head to the north in the northern hemisphere. But otherwise, you should not take any other attitude towards sleep. Sleep should happen in total abandon. That's the best way to be in a state of restfulness. It's not only during sleep. There is no prescription of how much you should sleep. Let the body decide how much you should sleep, that's the best way to go. But, if you manage your food, your mental attitudes, your emotional tranquility, well, you will see the sleep quota will come down dramatically. If you bring yogic practices, you can further bring down sleep quota quite significantly so that you have more time to live.

... We can eat unconsciously or we can eat consciously. We can breathe unconsciously or we can breathe consciously. Everything that we can do, we can do it consciously. The moment we do something consciously, suddenly that human being looks very refined and wonderful. Just because somebody walks and speaks consciously, doesn't he become a beautiful human being? Yes or no? That's all. So why is it that we're trying to develop habits as if this is a good thing. Habit means fixed realities, where you don't have to think. You get up in the morning and it'll happen to you. No. Don't try to automize your life. That is not efficiency, that is efficiency of the machine. This one is supposed to function intelligently and consciously. Nobody is expecting it to function like a machine. So, about food and stuff. Food must be suitable for the body that we eat for. It is for the body. This is the building material for this body, the food that you're eating. What is the appropriate food? Unfortunately, it is all messed up right now. Traditionally we ate very sensibly in this country. But this thousand years of invasions have brought other kinds of food cultures. And today the national diet is pizza or pasta. What is it? Which is one? I don't know. Both are competing. So, we're losing our sense about food, it's definitely time to look at what is the most suitable thing. If I go into that food, it's a very long process. But, you must experiment with food. Not just by the tongue, but by the body. You eat something today and see, just learn to observe. How agile and how active your body feels after eating this food. If it feels like it wants to go to the grave, that's not good food. If it feels like it wants to be alive after eating this, except coffee. Because that's a stimulant. If you eat food and your body feels very agile and alive, that means it's good food. Body is liking it. If you eat something, it feels dull, that means it's not liking it. It's having difficulty with it. That's why it feels dull. So, just on this basis. There's so much, I mean this is a very simplistic way of putting it.

You must understand, the food on your plate is not just a substance. It is not a material. It is not a commodity. It is life. It is the life-making material for you. So, you must treat it as such. Right now, when it's on the plate, when it's out there it has no value. But the moment you consume it and it becomes your flesh and blood, now suddenly it's of immense value. Why do we live like this? It's very important, when it comes on your plate itself, you must treat it as a part of yourself. With great reverence, you must consume. Just the way you consume it, if you change that, food will behave very differently within you. This is what conscious means. If people say your consciousness has no impact on your life, only chemical structures have impact, I'm very sorry for them. Because that's not how life works. Human consciousness has a deep and profound impact on everything that we touch. Especially the food, that we are making another life as a part of ourselves. The fork, you do not know who's used it, how they've used it, for what they used it. And, all they have to do is wipe it with a tissue and give it to you, and it looks pretty clean. Above all, you don't feel the food. The first thing that's been taught to us is, if food appears in front of you, to hold your hands upon the food for a few moments. Just to feel how the food is. If something appears on my plate, if I just feel this, I know what to eat and what not to eat. What I should not eat, I don't taste it and then reject it. I just don't eat. Because my hands are the first level, not tasting in the sense the tongue taste, but knowing the food. First thing is, knowing the food. You want to know a person, you guys go and shake their hands. I'm usually avoiding that. That's a good strategy. But the food that's going to become a part of you, first thing is your hands. Even if you physically don't touch it, just being conscious and being there, it clearly tells you how the food will behave within you. One big meal I eat, and that's it. And doctors telling me, "No, no, Sadhguru. The way you're travelling, this will happen, that will happen. You must eat at least once in four hours. Something you must eat." I said, "Leave me alone, I'm doing fine." But now, a big university, in America comes up with this called 'intermittent fasting'. It's not nonsense, it's good. Now if you do it, it's only for the pleasure of it. One day you feel like drinking coffee, you drink it. One day you feel like smoking, you smoke. That's upto you. So because of this, there is not enough activity in that region. That's one reason. Another thing is reproductive process is not made use of, that's another reason. So if you're not using your reproduction process, that is, you're not bearing a child before you're 21 years of age, it's very very important that you must do Hatha Yoga. If you do gym, if you run, if you do this and that. Run, to some extent. But if it is gyming and doing muscles and you're looking fit. That's not good. You must do intense Hatha Yoga. In today's world, the way the society is structured, the way that many aspects of life have arranged itself, women have to care much more about their health than men. Simply because nature has invested a very elaborate reproductive system in a woman. We were all born out of a woman's womb. So there was an elaborate system inside. Normally, if you look back, they would start using reproductory system by the age, they were 15, 16. It was put to use probably throughout their life. At least throughout their reproductive life, in some way it was put to use. If a woman had 6, or 7, or 8 children in her lifetime, most probably it was spread out throughout. So reproductory organs were used in a certain way. Because of that, she did not have those issues as they have today. Another reason is, both men and women, of course, were working hard physically. Physical work. Because of physical work, there never was any fat around the abdomen. Another dimension of this is also, urban young women these days, a lot of them are very disturbed about something or the other. At one time only your family, or your children, or your husband, or your immediate friends, disturbed you. Now you have friendship across the globe, and just about anybody can freak you anytime. So just a message is enough that you worry about it for next three days. For whatever reasons, I don't want to blame it on any one thing. It has become a norm that everybody must be stressed. So this also can be very easily handled. The basic body chemistry can be brought to such a level of balance within you if you do the right kind of yoga.

So after a period of time, you feel rejuvenated because consumption has been lowered. Essentially you're managing the energy equation. If you're in an acute activity, the consumption is more. Whatever you're producing, it's not enough after some time, you feel exhausted because the consumption has been heavy. If you lower the consumption, and increase the production, after some time you feel energized. So now there are ways to lower the consumption and increase the productivity also. See if you come to a certain state of ease. When I say ease, it's not something that most people will ever understand because most people are not at ease. If you're at total ease, the system is at total ease, everything is at ease, it is well rested. Always, it is rested. Because it's so rested throughout the day. If you sleep in the afternoon, do you see you can't sleep much in the night? Yes? Oh, you're already experimenting? If you sleep in the afternoon, you can't sleep much in the night unless you're sick or you're very tired because of something. Because it's well rested in the day, it can't sleep in the night. The ideal way to live is, there is no sleep in my life. But that's not possible. Right now, still body has some inertia. So it sleeps minimum, rest of the time it is at ease. If you keep this at ease, then sleep does not occur to the body unless it comes to a certain point of exhaustion. So, body is never ever asking for sleep, but it is definitely asking for rest. If you're not at ease, that means you're in dis-ease. You're heading there. You're in dis-ease means you're in a certain state of ill health. So don't move in and stay into the direction of disease, move into the direction of ease. If you become totally ease, sleep quality, sleep quota will come down. Quality of sleep will be good because quality of life is good. You want to increase only the quality of your sleep, life does not work like that.

If you keep this at ease, then sleep does not occur to the body unless it comes to a certain point of exhaustion. So, body is never ever asking for sleep, but it is definitely asking for rest. If you're not at ease, that means you're in dis-ease. You're heading there. You're in dis-ease means you're in a certain state of ill health. So don't move in and stay into the direction of disease, move into the direction of ease. If you become totally ease, sleep quality, sleep quota will come down. When it absorbs the sodium levels, which are very delicately balanced, will drop. Rest of the body also is affected, but may not be noticeable. But in the brain, sodium levels dropping, will lead to swelling of the brain. This does not mean that your brain is growing. Swelling means it's a kind of sickness okay? Not expansion of the brain. It’s swelling up because of lack of sodium content. So because there is not enough sodium, more water goes into the brain trying to supply the required sodium to keep the balance. So more water in your brain means you will slosh - psychological imbalances will come. See, if you drink lots of water at one go, the body will decide, how much to absorb, and how much to throw out. But if you keep sipping through the day, the body kind of gets deceived and tends to absorb more water than it should. But let’s say right now you drink two litres of water. All of it is not going to go into the system. What is needed, it will take, the rest of it will be shunted out. Nobody needs to drink water simply because you think it is a good thing to do. When you feel thirsty, you must drink water. Just to ensure you are drinking enough, drink 10% more than what you actually need. Couple of cups more, just to ensure that you don’t drink less. You have a certain amount of time before you can drink, that it is not an emergency. At the same time, when you need water, when you are thirsty and you don’t drink, it will cause damage to the system. The damage to the heart is immense when the water that is needed is not is not there in the system. But when I say water, it is not about drinking liquid water. You must eat high water content foods. If you eat a fruit, it is nearly 90% water. Vegetables and other things are over 70% water. When you consume food, at least it must be level with the percentage of water content in your own body. So any food that you eat should be at least 70% water content. This is why vegetables, fruits must be part of your diet so that it is there.
