How to minimize the negative impact of living in a city?

Transcript: Wherever you may be, whether you're in Mumbai or New York or London, wherever. Just look at the situation in which you're working. Maybe socially you've got used to those things. But look at the kind of atmosphere you're working in, the number of things that are happening. None of them are conducive for this life. You might have gotten adjusted to it. Maybe now you can't live out of those cities, that's...

... another matter. But, the life that you are is not seeking that kind of atmosphere. So the number of variations that are happening within you, are not in your favour. Glandular disfunction is just one manifestation. A very highly calibrated function. Another dimension is, what's the disturbance that's happening within you? Your own psychological patterns. Another dimension of disturbance is, what kind of food is getting into you? There is no way you can eat anything today, which is not chemically infested. You're eating very organic food, little organic chemicals they're using. It's come to that place. It's very difficult to eat something that's just grown in the wild forest, you can pluck out something and eat. That's very, very little. Not even a small percentage of people are capable of eating that anymore. It's all from the market place. Well, you can't leave your city and go and live in the jungle. You can't leave the atmospheres and go away. At least you must equip yourself so that those things don't have too much impact on you. It'll anyway have impact, but how much is the question. How much impact? At least within your home, surround yourself with some plants. If there is no space, fill your room. This is going to have some freaky bedrooms. Open up half the roof. Oh but there's another floor above, Sadhguru. Okay, open up the damn walls so that some sunlight comes into you. Yes? Not everything is closed and just one air conditioner is going brrr all the time. This is one thing, the reverberations around you are freaking this body completely. All the time. Particularly when I'm outside the country, particularly in United States. Even in Europe it's a little better. In United States, all the time something is buzzing. Endlessly. When I come here, it's like. Just. Which makes you alive. Everything is buzzing, you're like. Most people are not conscious of it but it's happening to them. The very fact that they're sleeping 8 hours a day is just that. So if this has to happen, you can, I know you may look freaky, even I will think you're freaky. But you can bring some plant-life into the place where you sleep. When you walk, you must always be conscious of the life other than human life. Most people are not even conscious of human beings, so I'm reminding you. You must be conscious of everything that is alive. A tree, a plant, a blade of grass, a grasshopper hopping. And the people that you don't like are passing by.

Why are Thyroid problems on the rise?

Transcript: Sadhguru, these days many people are diagnosed with thyroid problems, hyper or hypothyroidism. Even though we are consuming iodized salt, still thyroid problems are occurring. ... in yoga we don't look at the glands like that. But medically what you're calling as thyroid is that secretion within you which is trying to calibrate your system on a daily basis. It's just calibrating. How much digestion should happen, how much energy should be produced, how much fat should be produced, how much muscle should be built, everything. It's trying to calibrate your physical structure. Your physical structure is very closely related to your psychological structure. Today there is substantial evidence to show you that if you sit here and think of the mountain, your glandular function will happen in a certain way. If you think about a tiger, it will happen another way. You think about an ocean, it will happen another way. You think of a man or a woman, it will happen another way. Just a thought. Nothing. No contact with mountain, no contact with tiger, no contact with man, woman or ocean. Just a thought will fluctuate the glandular function. I'm saying that is how fine the system is that it is trying to calibrate everything to keep you in a good place. The thyroid, it's easily noticeable. The first thing your physiological and psychological parameters get thrown off a bit simply because disturbance. And another dimension is, what's the disturbance that's happening from within you? Your own psychological patterns. Another dimension of disturbance is, what kind of food is getting into you? There is no way you can eat anything today, which is not chemically infested. One of the main reasons is, human beings are becoming less and less active as technology grows. In a day, on an average, average human being, how much activity, physical activity, they used to perform in the past, previous generations of people and how much physical activity all of us are performing right now is abysmally low. With such a low level of activity, keeping the balance in the system is difficult.

The benefits and dangers of shaving your head

Transcript: If you prune this tree today, the tree will focus its energy towards the area that's been pruned. And you will see, suppose you prune this part of the tree and don't ruin that, you will see in this part of the tree, the number of leaves that will come out in the next 15 days or a month is much, much more than in the other part of the tree. ... pruned, the tree directs its energy in that direction. The others, it will leave and direct this way because here the leaf must come back. The same happens in your body. If you suddenly remove this hair, then you will see the energies will move in that direction. So people who are doing certain type of sadhana, want that to happen. So people don't just shave their head whenever they feel like it. On the darkest night of the month, which is called the shivaratri, the fourteenth day of the moon's faces, one day before amavasya. On that day they shave because on that day, and the amavasya day, and the next day, when energies are, naturally there is an upsurge of energy in the human system, we want to accelerate that a little more. So on that day it is taken off. Because there is sadhana attached to that. If there is no sadhana, it won't make much of a difference. Some of you may know that, particularly ladies who have never shaved their head in their life, suddenly one day if they go and shave their hair, they will become mentally imbalanced. Because excessive energy in the direction, they are not able to handle. If already there is a small imbalance, it will exaggerate itself. Because there is an excess energy moment in that direction. But if it's calibrated properly and there is a necessary sadhana to support it, it works to your benefit. The nature of the body is such, the volume of energy that one neuron consumes in the body, in the in the brain, is many, many, many fold more than what one cell in the body consumes. So in terms of the physical structure, how the energy consumption is distributed. You can see this yourself, if somebody worries about something, they will lose weight. The best ways to lose weight is worry about something. You know that, isn't it? Yes or no? Because more activity means, more stressful activity in the brain means, it'll consume a lot of energy and it will bring down the body's weight.

The scientific reason to be a vegetarian

Transcript: Food is not to be made into a philosophy or a kind of a religious process. Food is the requirement of the body. If we watch the body, with what sort of food the body is most happy. Body is most at ease. You will naturally notice vegetarian, or plant-based food, body is most comfortable and is at ease. It is flexible, it is at ease. It has les to process on a daily basis. So naturally, those who observed...

... the nature of their own bodies, naturally became vegetarian. When survival was a question, hunting and eating whatever you kill was a natural process. But once society has settled down, they could grow what they want. As they observed themselves more and more, and life became not about survival but about enhancing one's life to higher levels of perception and experience, then turning vegetarian will naturally become, it's a natural process. It's bound to happen everywhere. If you just want to be all beefy brawn, then you can eat lot of meat and just grow muscles and fight with each other. But if you're looking at how to become sensitive to life, how to become perceptive, how to be able to perceive things beyond what is considered normal perception, then what you put into the system becomes very important. So what is it that passes through the system with least amount of resistance, with least amount of, you know, struggle in the body. So to put this into perspective, let me put it this way. See if you eat raw meat, for example, in the human system compared to carnivorous animals. In all the carnivorous animals, the length of the elementary canal is only three times the length of its body, approximately. In all the herbivores, the length of the elementary canal is five to six times the length of the body. So in a human being it could be anywhere between 24-28 or 30 feet, which is nearly five to six times the length of our body, approximately. In this kind of elementary canal if you put meat, it will travel through this very, very slowly. Approximately, raw meat would take 70-72 hours to pass through the system. If you put cooked meat, it will take 50-52 hours to pass through the system. If you put cooked vegetable meals, it will take anywhere between 24-30 hours to pass through the system. If you put raw vegetables into the system, it will take 12-15 hours to pass through the system. If you put fruit into the system, it will take 1.5-3 hours to pass through the system. So we started recognizing, what is that food which happens in the body with least amount of residue, least amount of impurities and passes through the system very quickly. Because in yoga this is an important thing. We all manage this even now. If we eat anything, within 2.5 hours we must be hungry, or stomach must be empty. But we won't eat. Stomach is empty but we're energetic so we don't eat. So generally, here in the yoga center, everybody does only two meals. One 10 in the morning, 7 in the evening. That's it. I do only one meal most of the days. If I'm traveling, I may do something else a little bit. But otherwise, generally if I'm home, I do only one meal.

Anything wrong with having multiple partners?

Transcript: Sadhguru, my next question for you is, why can't one husband be with multiple women? And one woman, or a wife, can be with multiple husbands in today's society among consenting adults. And what impact do these people have when they're involved in such relationships? See, this is a certain framework of, not just of bone and muscle and flesh, there is a certain energy framework. Only because of that...

... it takes in a certain form. See, if you eat mangoes everyday, and let's say a cow eats mangoes everyday. At some point, will you or the cow get confused whether you're a cow or a human being? Or will the cow get confused? Such a thing never happens because there is a clear-cut inner framework, to which flesh and blood is added. But there is a framework, an evolutionary memory framework is there. It never gets broken, isn't it? So in this framework, how strong you keep this framework, how much integrity is there to this energy framework will determine many things about your life. Many aspects of your life. Especially if you want to raise this life to another level of function, it's very important you maintain this integrity. This is why, irrespective of which religion, which spiritual process, if people want to raise themselves to a certain point, first thing they will talk about is becoming monks or brahmacharis or sanyasis. Because the idea is to create such a level of integrity that this is a whole life by itself. That is doesn't lean on anything else for support. Either for physical wellbeing, or emotion wellbeing, or psychological companionship, it doesn't lean on anything. It stands by itself because you want to take it somewhere else. If you want normal function, these things are not necessary. Now you want to become a rocket which breaks through a certain dimension of space, now you need to be in a different level of force and integrity otherwise it'll crack up. So you don't want to open your body to anything. And especially opening to multiple partners has its own negativity in that context. How much pain. You look at Draupadi's life, how much volatility, how much pain, how much suffering she went through in her life. And how much pain and suffering she caused because of her anger and jealousy and whatever else. So these things happen for variety of reasons, you can't blame everything on that aspect. But that aspect also has a say in these aspects because you're opening up your memory body, your energetic body which is essentially ruled by memory, to variety of memories. This will cause a whole lot of turmoil within the system which could affect that life and many other lives. So Draupadi's life is in a way a sample for that. See, body is the front-end for every other creature on this planet. The only reason this creature is dominating this planet is not because we have the best body. You're not comparable to an elephant, or a tiger, or anything for that matter. You're not even as good as a buffalo. Yes. In terms of strength and physical prowess, you're nowehre comparable. This is dominant because of its intelligence, this is dominant because of its consciousness. But right now, we're creating a world where your biology is the front-end of your life.

How to always be alert? Do you feel drowsy through the day?

So, if you, you must do, you know, generally for people who are in the yogic path, you know what they say? You should eat only 24 morsels. I'm not saying this to everybody. And if you're noticing that you're tending to fall asleep through the day, you eat only 24 morsels of food, that is, 24 mouthfuls. Why 24? I will not go into that number business now. But there's a science behind it. You only eat 24 mouthfuls. Mouthful does not mean. So, essentially your alertness depends on how keenly you manage your energies. So to assist it, you eat only 24 morsels. Try from dinner. Or you want to do it tomorrow? Shall we try this in dinner or tomorrow? Now if you do eat only 24 morsels, normal sized morsels, you will see in the morning you will wake up at 3:30. Yes. In the Indian way of looking at time, there's something called as a nimisha which has something to do with 24. That's why you eat 24. You eat 24. And still you must take the same time as somebody who is eating a full meal. Whoever, just see whoever eats maximum in the ashram, just see their plate. Till they get up, you must be sitting right there. Not simply sitting, you must chew. To every mouthful, you chew 24 times. 1, 2, 3, 4, chew it 24 times. Now you will see you will take more time than anybody else. But your food is pre-digested in your mouth before it goes in. It will not cause dullness. If you chew your food sufficiently, you will see food will not cause dullness. If it's masticated in the mouth region, then morning you will wake up at 3:30. What do I do Sadhguru? Just what you asked. Meditate.

So one of his most recent interviews, which he did with a famous or a well-known anchor in this country. Husain died in London at the age of 92. 92. ... think this interview was taken just three months before his death. What is the secret of your longevity, energy and health? He said just two things. Eat less, walk barefoot. Do you know this has been an issue with him in many controversies, where he was not allowed into certain very elite clubs barefoot. But he always insisted he walks barefoot. So for him to live long and healthy, this is the recipe he gave. Eat less, walk barefoot. It was very amusing for me to hear him say that. So what is the significance of barefoot? Especially those of you who find your body is not integrated enough, constantly it's troubling you. Such people should walk barefoot. It'll be nice if you can crawl, more contact I mean. This is why you prostrate. What do you think is the purpose of taking a dip in the temple pond and going and prostrating inside? Everything in your body comes in touch. This is what sashtang means, that the key points in your body must be in touch with the earth. For one who is on a spiritual sadhana, particularly on those days, shivaratri, amavasya and the next day after that, those three days. What is available on the planet is phenomenal. And it's also a reminder for you to intensify your sadhana. On that day, not missing the opportunity of what is there. So on that day walking barefoot. Every day there is benefit but on those days there is a particular kind of benefit, which is not only for physical health but also for spiritual well-being, also for creating the necessary momentum in the system for an upward moment.

Mental health and spiritual health | Sadhguru in Conversation with YouTubers | #11

Synopsis: I talk a lot about mental health with the youth. It is a word that more and more, I become uncomfortable saying. Because when you say mental health, you’re already separating the other holistic health to one that focuses only on the mind. Right? And when I talk about mental health, for me it’s body health, it’s spiritual health, and it’s not only the mind. I...

The question for you is, can you talk a little bit about the connection between mental health and spiritual health? Because I see so many similarities in the way that you are experiencing the world, which seems in a very spiritual way. But I also don’t even want to call it spiritual because it would be creating a division between how to experience the world.

How to cleanse the Aura – 4 types of bath

Transcript: Aura is a certain manifestation of yourself. A subtler manifestation in the physical body. Keeping it clean is good. Aura is a manifestation, it's not a presence by itself. But what you manifested yesterday, or what you manifested 10 years ago, may be still hanging around you and not allowing you to become what you want to be. So that can be cleansed. Have you noticed that when you have a shower, or...

... a bath as we say in India, which is not a dip but pouring of water over your body. When you let water go over you, you're not just cleaning the physical self, that is you're not just cleaning the skin. Something else also gets cleaned. Let's say you're feeling very angry, agitated, and all kinds of things happening within you. You just go have a shower and come out, you feel. All the nonsense kind of washed off. So a shower is not just about cleaning the skin of your body. You can cleanse the aura to some extent because what you call as body is a manifestation or a play of five elements. So you can give yourself a water bath. You can similarly give yourself a wind bath. You must see this. Suppose there's a gentle breeze flowing, you just went and stood like this. Suppose you wear thin clothes and simply stand like this. After some time you feel. Have you noticed that? Have you noticed this? You feel so clean and you want to feel like transparent and you want to fly away. Wind can do that. It should be just of the right velocity and feel and temperature and everything, if it's right, you will see wind just cleanses you. Wind bath. We can also give you a mud bath. You know if you go to the rejuvenation center, they're giving you a mud bath. Similarly we can give you a fire bath. So what's being done in the temple is a fire bath because, you know she's Bhairavi. You just give yourself a fire bath. Of course you can't pour it over your body. You just touch the aura of your body in a certain way. There are certain patterns running in your aura, along the tracks you run the fire, you will see suddenly you'll feel bright and clear.

Benefits of burning incense – what is the right material for incense?

Transcript: Incense burning is about the atmosphere, not about you. Because different spaces, indoors especially. In different spaces there are different kinds of, one thing is smells. ... to the shape and size of the room in which you live. So, different shapes and sizes kind of create different kinds of energy structures. These energy structures can, if they become very strong, can determine your psychological and emotional state. Which either can be conducive or can become an impediment in who you want to be. So certain substances like sandal in India. There is something called a sambrani which is a very powerful thing, which is used even when people are ill. First thing they do is this and it is now been found it also kills certain types of bacteria in the air and also on the surfaces. So especially if there is a sick person in the house, sambrani everywhere. If they want to do some auspicious event, sambrani all over the place. It's a certain kind of regime, which as a tree drips. This has a powerful impact on the atmosphere. It is not necessarily a fragrance. It is a different kind of thing that it clarifies the air, it just makes the atmosphere feel more lively. Fundamentally it, whatever structures that they are there, it will make indoor like outdoor. If you burn a mild, you shouldn't to put too much then you will sneeze and lose your brains. Just mild sambrani in the house will make it feel like, though you're indoors, the feeling is of outdoors because it's an unstructured space. Especially if death happens in the family, sambrani is burnt for up to 11 to 12 days because they want to clear that air completely. Incense has a certain impact but don't overdo it. Don't think it will determine your spiritual nature. It can change the atmosphere a little bit. It should not be over certified. It has certain impact. These days incense is being made with chemical stuff. Best you don't burn those things. It's very, very important before, you have enough chemical thing happening on the street, in the industry, in the factory floor that you may be working, wherever. There's enough chemicals floating around. At least within your house do not burn chemically made incense because I think that is almost 70% or 80% of what's available in the market today is chemical. You must take it out before you burn it. It's very, very important because within the closed enclosures if you burn chemicals, well the negative impact of that is very, very big. So it must be natural resin or certain other oils, essential oils and things which can make a difference.

Benefits of applying Vibhuti (sacred ash) – how to prepare and where to apply?

... body, just in certain points. If that is also difficult, then we did rice bran. Otherwise we did sesame seed ash. Like this we produce more and more benign things. But when Adiyogi used, he used cremation ground ashes. Even today many yogis use only that. But you should not do that unless you're properly initiated into the process and you know what to do with it and if certain things happen, you know what to do with it. For you the simple ash, either made out of cow dung or rice bran. When you apply, if you go into a space which is energetically charged in some way, if you apply it between your eyebrows. There is a spot, you must know this exact spot, there is a spot behind your ears, if you apply on those two sides and the pit of your throat and where the rib cage meets, just beneath that. The idea is you want the higher aspects of who you are to become receptive. See right now, to put the example very basic, I want you to understand this, don't react to these things. Now let us say you are a man. A woman came in front of you. It is not just the eyes, the whole body responds, okay. It depends who it is, what it is. Now, if you look at her in a certain way, you may think she's your mother. If you look at her in another way, you may be drawn to her sexually. If you look at her in another way, you may be repelled because it reminds you of something. Reminder need not be necessarily in the mind, it's all over the body. So now you're walking on the street, you don't want to get entangled in all these things. If you see anything, you want to receive this in the highest possible way. So you apply vibhuti to make those spots more sensitive. So that your receptivity is in the higher dimension of life, not on the lower dimension of life. When I say lower, I am not talking in terms of hierarchy, high and low. I'm talking geographically lower in your body, okay. It is not a question of morality, it is not a question of right and wrong. It is a question of entanglement. If you receive from higher dimensions within you, there is no entanglement. If you receive the same thing from lower dimensions, the same thing will become entangling in the process.

Wearing black clothes can cause psychological issues

Transcript: Colour as we know it, colour as our visual apparatus know it, is only a certain breakdown of the white light. Something looks red not because it is red. Because, of the entire spectrum of colours which exist in the white light, it holds back everything and reflects only red, or in other words what it rejects becomes its colour. That means the perception is completely wrong. You think something is red,...

... it's everything except red. And you think it's red because it's reflecting red light only, rest it's holding back. So something is white because it's reflecting everything as it is. So, if you move about in areas and spaces and situations where you have no control over what happens around you. Always white was suggested, if you walked out, white. Because you don't know what's happening, you don't know what's happening in the world around you, you don't know what's happening in whose mind, what thoughts, what emotions people carry. So white gives you a certain protection because it reflects everything. Not just the light, the very energy. Black absorbs everything. If you're in a space where you want to absorb what is around you, you must wear black. But if you wear black in a place where you don't want to absorb, but you wear because you look slimmer, then you will start accumulating all kinds of things. I would. It's a very unpopular thing to say. I would ascribe at least 20 to 25% of psychological struggles that people go through to remaining in black clothes for long periods of time in all kinds of situations where they should not be. People are wearing black for mourning. When somebody's dead, black is one thing you should never wear. If there is death around you, you must always wear white because you don't want to absorb that kind of energy. But I see everybody is wearing black when there is death, complete misunderstanding of life or no awareness at all. You've just arrived at things intellectually. So if there's anything that you don't want to absorb, you must wear white. All the other colours are in between play. But it is between black and white. White means complete reflection, black means no reflection. In between is selective reflection. That's for fun. But where we want to really absorb something, we wear black. Where we want to reflect, then you wear white.

Just take care of these 3 things to always be healthy

Transcript: To create health for yourself, there are three fundamentals that you need to take care of. Food, activity and rest. When it comes to food, one of the most important things that you must be conscious of is, on a certain day when you eat a certain type of food, whatever you eat, you must consciously notice how quickly does it digest and become a part of yourself. Any food that you eat, if it lasts over...

... three hours, that means you've eaten bad food and that is something to be either avoided or reduced in quantity. If food moves out of your stomach bag within three hours, this means you're eating something that your system can handle efficiently. It may not be the best food, but your system is able to handle it. And between one meal and the next meal, if you create a clear gap of five to six hours and in between if there is no other ingestion, you will see the cleansing process in the system on the cellular level. Cleansing will happen. This cleansing on the cellular level is most important and significant for a healthful life. So between meals there must be at least five to six hours of space. If you're over 30 years of age, two meals a day, two good meals a day will suffice. One in the morning and one in the evening. After the evening meal, before you go to bed, there must be a minimum of three hours. And if there is a certain amount of physical activity, not necessarily very heavy or strenuous activity, just simple walking or maybe a dance or something like this. Create something for yourself where, about at least 20 to 30 minutes there is some physical activity after the evening meal. If you do this, largely, your system will be healthy. If one goes to bed with food still inside the stomach bag, a certain level of inertia is generated in the system. This inertia, physiologically it's like accelerating towards death. Death is ultimate inertia. And if you go to bed with stomach full, one thing is it generates inertia. Another dimension is the stomach bag is full means it will create pressure on other organs in the abdomen region. This will also lead to various kinds of health issues. It's very important when you go to bed, again, food has moved out of the stomach bag. That the bag is not heavy. When it comes to activity, in this brief time I don't want to give you an exercise regimen. The simple thing that we need to understand is, our body is capable of bending forward, bending backward and twisting sideways on either side. This much activity must happen. Whatever we do, in whatever form. If you do classical Hatha Yoga, that is the best way to do it, scientific way of doing it. If that is not yet in your life, you must somehow make sure every day you bend forward, backward and twist both ways and squat. So that stretching of the spinal column will happen. This much activity is a must for everybody on a daily basis if we want to keep the entire system in a healthful state. Particularly your neurological system, which will be an issue as one ages. The volume of rest that an individual needs is determined by various factors. What the body needs is restfulness, not necessarily sleep. Most people understand that sleep is the only way to rest. No. If you are in a lively state of restfulness moment to moment in your life, the volume of sleep you actually require will come down.

Transcript: To create health for yourself, there are three fundamentals that you need to take care of. Food, activity...

... and rest. When it comes to food, one of the most important things that you must be conscious of is, on a certain day when you eat a certain type of food, whatever you eat, you must consciously notice how quickly does it digest and become a part of yourself. Any food that you eat, if it lasts over three hours, that means you've eaten bad food and that is something to be either avoided or reduced in quantity. Are your clothes killing you?

Transcript: There's substantial studies which show that wearing synthetic fiber causes immense damage to the system and could be the source of various diseases that we are suffering. ... in their bodies. This may be so everywhere, probably only Americans have been studied. They've been put under the microscope. They say on an average 28 grams of plastic could be in American citizens' body. Both from food consumption and textiles that they use. Especially for children, the level of skin allergies and other things you're finding is mainly because of the type of clothing they're using. And once you use synthetic clothing, it is very flammable. So to make it not so flammable, they're using other kinds of chemicals which are carcinogenic, there's no question about that. So these things need to be reversed now because as it is, it is estimated we are, on an average every human being on the planet has five times more clothing than what our grandparents had. That sum number even sounds low to me. That's among your clients. Yeah. I mean when I see people's closets. On an average, I'm saying. But by 2025, they say that's going to double. That means we'll have 10 times more. So when this kind of phenomenal increase in textile consumption is on the threshold, I think it's very important we bring back natural fiber. The way we dress is destroying the world. Textile has become the third largest polluter on the planet. So one important thing that needs to happen is to shift back to natural fiber as much as possible in the coming few decades. If we don't do that, because everybody's shooting the plastic bag which is visible. The lowly plastic bag is, yes it needs to be handled. But it is not the main thing. It's just visible and flying all over the place. But textile or poly fiber is one of the biggest polluters when it comes to plastic pollution. It's the largest one actually. But it goes unaddressed because it is all microfiber. It's in your body, it's in the food that we eat, it's in the water that we drink, it's everywhere. So shifting back to natural fiber as much as possible is an important thing and this is also, this will also handle variety of other aspects for nations which grow natural fiber and have the capacity and the talent to produce yarn and then to weave it in many different ways. Which is a skill that human beings developed for over thousands of years. You know it took millennia to develop these skills. But we're just killing it just in one or two generations. Simply because we got machine made cloth and we got synthetic fiber. So overall well-being of the human being involves clothing also. So here I am.

How to prevent cancer?

Transcript: When I say cancer cells, every one of our bodies has cancerous cells. But they're disorganized. They're all over the place. For some reason, if you create certain situations in the body, they will get organized. So from petty crime to organized crime, serious problem, isn't it? There are petty criminals everywhere in every town. Here and there they'll do little pickpocket, this, that, no problem. But...

... if 50 of them get organized in Coimbatore city, then suddenly the whole atmosphere in the city will change because these 50 guys together can do such things that it'll become dangerous for you to step on the street. So that's all is happening in the body. There are cancerous cells. These are criminal cells. They're running around. If they're loafing around by themselves, no problem. If they all gather in one place, if they meet in one place and they hit it off, then it's a problem. Before they gang up, if you keep breaking them up here and there, killing a few guys. Everyday neem just does that. It just reduces. It keeps the number of cancerous cells in the body within a certain percentage where it doesn't really gang up against the system. So it's a very important thing to consum neem. Only thing about neem is, if you consume it in excess quantity it also kills the sperm cells. That is, we will have the fortune of a reduced population if everybody in the world consumes enough neem. Because it's a spermicide it must be consumed in small quantities because it's not for us to decide what should happen to an individual. And women, when they are pregnant, up to four months of pregnancy or to be safe, up to five months of pregnancy, one should not consume neem because it is a spermicide. When the fetus is developing, the role of the sperm is still there to a certain point. Four months is what is prescribed. I am saying five months. One can start after five months.

What are good food habits

Transcript: So, about food and stuff. Food must be suitable for the body that we eat for. It is for the body. This is a building material for this body, the food that we eat. What is the appropriate food? Unfortunately is all messed up right now. Traditionally we ate very sensibly in this country. But this thousand years of invasions have brought other kinds of food cultures. And today the national diet is pizza...

... or pasta. What is it? Which one? I don't know. Both are competing. So we're losing our sense about food. It's definitely time to look at what is the most suitable thing. If I go into that, food, it's a very long process. But, you must experiment with food. Not just by the tongue but by the body. You eat something today and see, just learn to observe. How agile and how active your body feels after eating this food. If it feels like it wants to go to the grave, that's not good food. If it feels like it wants to be alive after eating this, except coffee because that's a stimulant. If you eat food and your body feels very agile and alive, that means it's good food. Body is liking it. If you it something, it feels dull, that means it's not liking it. It's having difficulty with it. That's why it feels dull. Food is about the body. We must eat what is suitable for this body. But right now you're talking about making food into a habit. I want to tell you, there is no such thing as good habit and bad habit. Habit means you're functioning unconsciously. If you're functioning unconsciously, that's a bad thing because the whole thing about being human is being capable of doing things consciously. That is the beauty of being human. That we can do everything consciously. What an animal does unconsciously, we can do the same thing consciously. We can eat unconsciously or we can eat consciously. We can breathe unconsciously or we can breathe consciously. Everything that we can do, we can do consciously. The moment we do something consciously, suddenly that human being looks very refined and wonderful. Just because somebody walks and speaks consciously, doesn't he become a beautiful human being? Yes or no? That's all. So why is it that we're trying to develop habits as if it's a good thing? Habit means fixed reality, where you don't have to think. You get up in the morning and it'll happen to you. No. Don't try to automize your life. That is not efficiency. That is the efficiency of the machine. This one is supposed to function intelligently and consciously. Nobody is expecting it to function like a machine.

You must do this at least twice a day

... More is good. Any kind of physical contact happens with somebody, a period of more than let's say six minutes. If you're even holding somebody's hand, before you do yoga, it's best that you have a shower. This is not a cleansing thing. We are not trying to clean the body, that's not the point. It's not because somebody's impure you're trying to clean your body. Yoga is a way of organizing your energies into an individual. So if any kind of transaction happen too much. If I come and sit in a program, I'm not even physically touching anybody, if I sit in a program for two, three hours, first thing is shower. Because just the interaction creates a certain amount of. The integrity of your energy becomes little loose. So at any time, first thing when you go home, shower. Shower need not mean soap, shampoo, this, that. A bucket full of water, boom. Just water flowing over, it purifies. How does water purify without washing and scrubbing? Not like that. You know, in nuclear reactors they're using certain metals, particularly metals like titanium and even platinum and few other things. If they want to purify these metals, they want metals in the purest form. In the normal laboratory process, they can only purify to a certain point beyond that they're not able to purify. So what they do is, you make a rod of this metal and make another ring. Just move it up and down without touching. Just do this, you will see the metals will get purified. So 72% of your body is water. You just throw water over this, there is a certain purification. Not about washing the dirt on your skin. That is anyway there, that's a different thing. But a certain purification on a deeper level happens just allowing water to flow over you. Have you seen, suppose you are very tense on a particular day, when you go and stand under the shower, you don't want to come out. You want to just stay there for some time. Those three minutes or five minutes in the shower hasn't solved any problem in your life but when you come out it looks like it's gone. You're like born fresh, have you noticed this? You feel it's all gone. Because all that's happening is, this is largely two thirds of it is water. If just water flows on this, certain things will change.

How to cure 70% of ailments

Transcript: Even if you go through a very brief period of illness, you suddenly understand the true value of health. What it means to be healthy. Largely, we do chemical warfare but it is fine because it is a war. But over 70% of the ailments that people suffer from are generally self-help. In the sense, the chronic ailments created from within. Our own system has begun to work against us. The word disease means it's dis-ease. That means you have lost the ability to keep the system at ease, or in other words the system has become frictious. Many dimensions of human mechanism are not able to function in a cohesive manner. There is a certain amount of friction which causes some ailment or the other. No ailment is hereditary by itself. It is just that we may have a certain organ or certain part of the body inherently weak from our parentage and hence we may go through the same ailment if we go through similar lifestyles. But there is ample evidence to show that if we do necessary things consciously with our body, mind, and energies, what ailments our parents might have had need not come to us if we are able to handle our lives little more consciously and the process can be easily reversed.

... temperature. Not more than that. So if you have a tendency to catch cold, initially, first couple of weeks you put a spoon of eucalyptus oil in the water, cold water, and pour it over you. You will see your cold will go away. Not because of the eucalyptus oil, just because the cold water. If you have an infection and something else where excess mucus is being generated, that needs to be treated differently. But as I said, the water should be just somewhere five to eight degrees below room temperature. If this happens, one thing that happens on the surface is, the cells, the epithelial cells will contract. When they contract they open up all the pores. The pores between the cells will open up. The cells themselves have pores, we don't want that to open. That will open if you put it in warm water. If you dip your body in a hot water tub, the cells will open up and take in water. That is not always a good thing to do. You put the body in cold water, the cells will contract. The in-between spaces will open and that's important for practicing yoga. Because we want the cellular structure of the body to be charged with a different dimension of energy. If the cells contract and allow space and then you practice your yoga, then the cellular structure in the body is charged. Why one person seems to be far more alive than the other is essentially because of this. And once your cellular structure is charged with energy, it will remain youthful for a very, very long time. When people are thinking why the old bugger is still not dead, you still feeling like you're 25.

The solution to travel tiredness and not being able to sleep in a new place

Transcript: Especially in travel, your aura gets frayed. This is the reason why you feel so exhausted with travel. Actually you sit and do nothing. Somebody is driving, you just sit. After 10 hours you find you're so tired. You did nothing. Because your energy gets frayed, your body is moving at a faster speed than it is designed to move. So the first thing that is damaged is your aura. If you go faster, faster,...

... faster, faster. Let's say you travel 600 miles per hour in an open space, without a windshield. You will see your skin will peel off, isn't it? After that your flesh will fly off. After that your bones will fly off. Yes or no? The first thing that begins to be damaged is your aura. So with movement, with faster and faster movement, aura gets frayed. So if you wear rudraksh, it gives you a certain cocoon, it gives a certain stability to your aura. Travel, movement can be taken well. One who is constantly eating and sleeping in different places, his body goes through a certain level of destabilization. In the sense, many of you might have noticed this, you went to a new place, even if you're very exhausted, somehow in a certain place your body won't settle down and sleep. Have you noticed this? Ever? If you're a traveling person, you would have noticed it in some places. Your body just won't settle down. You're fully exhausted but you cannot sleep. This is because in your own house, in your own bedroom. Today there is something called as, what is it? The forensic people are using this. What? Thermal imaging, is it? See if you sit here now, 24 hours later somebody will come with a machine and find out where Gayatri was sitting. There is a memory in the place which they're able to detect. This person was sitting only here, not there. Well, if you bring your dog, it knows you are sitting here, isn't it? So something is left there, isn't it so? Something is obviously left there that is why a dog or a machine or something can detect it. So you are sleeping in the same bed every day, here, certain aspect of your energy is left here. Here, you're very comfortable. If you go to another place where the energies are very different, your body may not settle. Sometimes it could be damaging to the system. So a person who is constantly traveling wears a rudraksh so that he has a cocoon of his own energy, that the outside energies does not disturb him. He has a, we call this a kavach. You know what's a kavach? Kavach? It's more like a cocoon. It's a cocoon of your own energy. Wherever you go, you have your private bedroom going with you. It travels with you wherever you go.

... Actually you sit and do nothing. Somebody is driving, you just sit. After 10 hours you find you're so tired. You did nothing. Because your energy gets frayed, your body is moving at a faster speed than it is designed to move. So the first thing that is damaged is your aura. If you go faster, faster, faster, faster. The right way to take a bath (do this when not taking a head bath)

Transcript: In the yogic culture, a shower, there was no shower. Bath always meant dip in the river. Always went to the river, dipped, come out and do it. If you do this, your muscles will be good. So an alternate way of doing it is, usually in our homes the pail that we use to pour water is this big. At least it has 4 litres of water. If you do this, the whole body. That's it. Always. ... insist on this for the ladies, your hairstyles and everything. But always a bath means, the first pail of water is on your head. Always. Putting cold water on your body will shift the heat into your brain very rapidly. It should not happen. So this is why, those who don't want to wet their hair, at least you take a little bit of cold water and put it. You know there's a point here, in line with your ears. Here. At that point you put little cold water, immediately you will see a certain cooling happens in the head region. After that, you can have bath with just the body. But otherwise, always, the first pail of water is over your head, not on your body. So what you do is, you fill the bucket, and. That's the best way to do it in the morning. The body should be immersed in water. You're trying to create a simulated dip in the river. Okay? At the same time, the whole body should be, at least the skin should be covered in water. At the same time, not like this, this, this. Like this, this, this, you know. If you pour water, the whole body, the body should think you're taking it for a dip. So, if you pour like this, there is a certain coolness in the system and muscles become very flexible. Shower can do it too. If the shower is forceful enough, or at least if the vloume of water is good enough, shower can easily do that.

How to reduce your sleep quota by 2 to 3 hours

Transcript: So you are supposed to chew your food. Why you are supposed to chew your food is that you have enzymes in your saliva. Where, if you take a little bit of raw rice and put it in your mouth just for a minute, you will see it turns sweet right here because right here carbohydrate is being converted into sugar, right here. So if you eat properly, then we say about 30 to 50% of your digestion should happen...

... in your mouth. So this part of the digestive system is expecting half digested food or partially digested food. But right now the way we're eating is, mostly we're putting not only undigested food, but partially destroyed food. So the amount of food that you need to get the same amount of energy has increased. You are eating much more food than what you should eat to generate that much of energy. Because of that, there is inertia in the body because it has to process so much more food than what it should. There is inertia. Once there is inertia, your sleep quota increases. See, this is not that you must deny yourself sleep, that's not the point. But if you eat right and do a certain things with your body, you see, very effortlessly, within three to four weeks, you can drop your sleep quota anywhere between two to three hours. One and a half to three hours very easily you can drop if you just eat consciously and just learn to sit properly. You know. Just the posture. Your geometry of the body and what goes into the system. If you just manage these two things, you'll see sleep quota will just come down like that. So what kind of food do you eat so there is no inertia in the body. In yogic way of seeing things, we are looking at thamas, rajas, and sattva. Thamas means inertia. Rajas means activity but no balance. Sattva means absolutely balanced kind of energy.

Today you have built homes which are so large, it's very difficult to make them alive just by living. If you just had a one room house, and you lived in great sense of love and joy, you can easily keep it very alive. But today your house has 10-15 enclosures, it's very difficult for any human being to keep it alive. Once in a way if you do not enliven it, slowly if you enter certain parts of your home, you will see it feels like a coffin. I want all of you, today, you know your house well enough, where you need to open your eyes, you open. But just walk with your eyes closed, with your left hand outstretched a little bit and just walk, just feel and walk around the house. You will see many parts of your house will feel like a coffin. Some parts may be alive. Usually I find kitchens are alive. Because it's the only place something is happening. Everywhere else. If you live in a very, very alive way, you can enliven something. But when you have 12, 15, 20 enclosures in your house, it's very, very difficult for anybody to enliven all that. And another thing is, it's recirculated air. Nobody opens a window or a door, it's all the time same air being recirculated or very minimal amount of movement of aliveness. If you have a lot of plants around you, trees around you, and if you keep the windows open, they will take care of the poornan puja for you to quite some extent. They can. But most of the houses are shut off and recirculated air is going on all the time. People are not moving about joyfully. Either they're staring at their computer screen, or they're depressed, or they're sleeping. Inertia of various levels. And various levels of stresses and tensions. It slowly builds up in the space and it can overwhelm a person.

Simple process to cleanse your Aura and access Akashik intelligence

Transcript: Fire accounts for 4% of your elemental makeup. If you wish to use fire, you can light a fire with an organic substance like straw, or fire root without any oil and stand facing the fire with your hands open and keep your eyes open for three minutes. Then stand with your back to it, exposing your spine for three minutes. This will cleanse your aura and bring about a new sense of resurgence in the system....

... This is to rekindle and reconnect the fire within, with the fires outside. This is the basis of all fire based rituals in the east. If having a fire is not very practical for you, at least a lamp with vegetable oil or ghee. You light a lamp and be around this lamp. First face the lamp and sit and then turn around and sit. So that the fire element within you gets rekindled. The fifth and the most expansive dimension of the elemental composition is akash, or etheric space. This has a certain intelligence. The nature, quality and the power of your life essentially is determined by how much excess can you find into the akashic intelligence. As I said, this is an expansive part of the elemental composition. That means there is no limit. There is only that much water, there is only that much air, that much earth, and that much fire. But the akashic dimension is a limitless possibility. If you find excess in a limitless manner, both your perception and intelligence can grow. One simple process you can do to find more access to akash, or the akashic intelligence is, after sunrise, before the sun crosses a 30 degree angle, look up at the sky once and bow down to akash for holding you and this planet in place. After the sun crosses 30 degrees, sometime during the day, any time, look up and bow down again. After the sunset, within the 40 minutes after sunset, look up at the sky and once again bow down. You are not bowing to any imaginary gods up there, just to the etheric space around us which is holding everything that we are in place. If you get the akash to cooperate with your life energies, life will happen in magical ways. An intelligence that you have never thought possible, will become yours.

Now they're saying, if it goes through 50 bends, about 60% of the water has turned poisonous. Immediately when it comes to the tap, immediately if it comes and you drink it, it will work as poison in your system. If you take it and hold it for some time, it will undo itself again. Because the poisoning is not chemical, it is molecular. Molecular changes are happening. No chemical changes happen. This is why, traditionally, your grandmother always told you, always you must gather the water, keep it overnight in your house in a properly cleaned vessel with vibhuti and kumkum on it and one flower on it. Yes or no? Traditional homes? Only tomorrow morning you drink it. Not as soon as it comes inside your house, you don't drink it because it carries all kinds of memories. In very traditional homes, people everyday to puja to the pot. Yes? And you never drink the water as soon as it comes. You keep it, give it enough time to undo itself from whatever nonsense it has gathered. So that it is suitable for you when you drink it. Water you must take care. Because it's 72%.

How to be in perfect health? When to take medicine?

Transcript: See, health does not mean that just the medical parameters are okay. Health means you must feel a certain sense of wholeness. The word health itself comes from the word whole, a certain sense of wholeness. If you feel like that, that means you're healthy....

... There is something called as a psychological reality and there is an existential reality. By controlling or handling the psychological reality well, a lot of people can become healthy. A lot. Because for a lot of them that is the cause of their ailment. But there's an existential dimension to this. Existentially, what are you made of, what is the world made of. If you look at it, this is the most fundamental aspect of yoga. This is called as Bhutashuddhi. This means elemental, cleansing of the elemental nature. The whole universe is a manifestation of five elements. So is this body. Out of these five, there are only four that you can really handle. Another one you just experience. It's the ambiance for the other four. So the earth, water, fire, air, and the space. So you only have to handle really four. Four ingredients if they're functioning the way you want them, then everything about you will be great. Out of this four, 72% of your water, I mean your body is actually water. So is the planet. The same composition of the planet you have in your body. About 12% is earth, about 6% is air, 4% is fire, the remaining is space. This is how it is looked at. If you master these four, even if you have a bit of control over these four, you will see miraculously you will generate health within the system. If you fail on this, then the next level of handling this is, nature has evolved certain things in the form of herbs and many things which are helpful to us. So we can learn to use them. If you fail in that, then you can create a psychological structure which will create health for you. If you fail in that, then you go for the chemical treatment. If you fail in that, then you go for a surgery.

A simple 12 min process to end suffering in your life

Transcript: One simple thing is this, first and foremost processes, that's why we put out this process called Isha Kriya. This is to distance yourself from your physiological and psychological process. There is something called as you, which exists. This is not a composite of all your thoughts and emotions and physiological processes. Beyond that, there is you. If you close your eyes, even if you cannot see anything,...

... you are still there. It is through the window of your eyes that you are looking out, but if you close your eyes it doesn't mean that you don't exist. You still exist. So beyond your thought, you still exist. Beyond your emotion, you still exist. So that you, the life that you are, this has to come into your experience. Why is it that you're not allowing that to come into your experience, which is the most significant aspect of who you are? Who you are right now. The most significant aspect is, you and me are alive right now. This is it. What I'm thinking, what you're thinking is not the important thing. We are alive right now, that is the important thing. So it is important that you focus on this fundamental sense of aliveness within you, and then you will see there is a natural distance between you and your thought process. Once there is a distance between your psychological process and your physiological process, this is the end of suffering. Because there are only two kinds of suffering that human beings go through, physical suffering and mental suffering. Once you create a little space between you and your mind, between you and your body, this is the end of suffering. This is something every human being has to experience and know, otherwise thinking I will just remove negative thoughts and I will have positive thoughts. All the best, it's not going to work. 100% it's not going to work because nobody can remove it. They can avoid it for some time. So when negative thoughts come, you say ram, ram, shiva, shiva, whatever you want. But this is just avoiding, it's not gone. The moment you stop that, it will pop back with great force. Otherwise, it will come back in your dreams. So it's very important, first of all, you need to understand your anger, your resentment, your fear, your anxieties, the negativity that you generate. Generally, resentment, anger, it is always directed towards somebody. But we need to understand, this is poisons that we are drinking and expecting somebody else to die. Fortunately, life doesn't work like that. If I drink poison, I die. If I drink poison, you don't die. So we need to understand this. When I say poison, today you can have yourself chemically analyzed. Right now, what is your blood work, what it says. Five minutes of intense anger, check your blood work and see there will be lots of negative elements in it. Literally, you're poisoning yourself. So do you want to poison yourself? Definitely not. Now the very question is coming from certain helplessness. What shall I do? Don't do anything. Just sit back and just concern yourself with something which is a life process. May be your heartbeat, may be your breath, may be just a sensation of being alive. Depending upon how sensitive or how perceptive you are, accordingly find something. It could be a sensation in the body, it could be breath, it could be heartbeat, it could be anything. Something which indicates life to you. Just pay attention to that for some time. Slowly you will see there is a distinction between what is you and what you have gathered, which includes both your physiological and psychological possibility or mess. Whatever you made out of it.

Just lie down for 12 minutes and do it till the last moment, till you fall asleep. There's something you must notice.

What is the importance of food? | Sadhguru at Columbia University | #6

Synopsis: You cook yourself. I believe Isha has also published a cookbook. Can you talk a little bit about food from the yogic diet perspective? Or what are things that we should be actively doing on a daily basis when it comes to food? What are tenants of the diet that we should be looking at? And, if you have a favourite recipe.

Is sports all about winning? | Sadhguru in Conversation with Ranveer Singh | #3

Synopsis: You thoroughly enjoyed watching the football. But what do you think about, what is your take on sports? It’s competition, it’s, isn’t it based on one-upmanship? Aren't you telling young kids that it’s about winning, you know? As a child, I didn’t get any kick from winning. It was very minimal for me. I used to really just enjoy playing cricket, playing football....

... The process was so enjoyable. I used to enjoy competing with someone, but winning wasn’t, you know everybody used to be like you have to win. You know, teachers, my dad was like all about winning. But it was not for me, it didn’t resonate with me. So what is this whole thing about, like what should we, how should we inculcate sports in young people? What do you tell them? Is it about winning?

What is Health – as per modern medicine

By this evening, you may not be healthy, it's possible. It's very much possible. This idea that you can define health as, this is it, and you define it in chemical parametres and say, this, this, this, you're healthy. No. Many things can fluctuate within the system, without you being unhealthy. Or many things can be stable, without you being healthy.

15 Dec to 15 Jan – How to make use of the planetary positions in this month of Margazhi

Transcript: We are at a time of the year which is considered significant for those who are on the spiritual path. The terminal month of margazhi starts from 16th. What is the significance of this month? It is at this time of the year that the planet earth is closest to the sun. So this should have been the hottest month. But, this is a time when the planet is shy of the sun and the northern face faces away from...

... the sun. In the southern hemisphere, this is the hottest part of the year. In the northern hemisphere, this is the coolest part of the year because the northern hemisphere, or the northern face, of the planet is facing away from the sun. But it is closest. So in terms of temperature, because of the closeness to the sun, the angle at which the sun's rays hit the planet is very diffused. But in terms of sun's gravity functioning on the planet, right now it is at the highest. So the maximum pull of the sun's gravity is functioning upon the planet at this time. So this margazhi month is a time to bring balance to the system. It is like if something is flying all over, if you just pull it, it gets centralized. So that is the effect that the margazhi month has on the human system, it pulls you from the base. So it brings balance and stability. Recognizing this, that one needs to bring balance and stability, this is a time when there are practices in the yogic system which has transmitted itself into culture in many different ways. This is a time when men will do what generally women are supposed to do and women will do what men are supposed to do. In the sense, in Tamil Nadu, there's a culture that this is a time when men will go on nagaras and kirtan. That means men will practice devotion, they will sing. Singing and devotion is largely considered feminine, so men will practice this. Woman will practice making geometrical figures. Geometry and masculinity are very directly connected. If a woman sees something, let's not say woman. If feminine sees something, it will always pay maximum significance to the colour and form of that. If the masculine sees something, it always sees the geometry first and then the colour and the form. So it is in this month women practice geometry.

Don’t protect the environment – protect yourself

Transcript: The idea that we need to protect this planet itself is a convoluted idea. Because it is not because of us that the planet is there, it is because of the planet we are there. Even to think, me and the planet, is a completely wrong notion because what you call as myself, the physical presence of who you are, is just an outcrop of this planet. Whatever you experience as a part of yourself, with that,...

... nobody has to tell you please take care of this. Anyway you will take care of it. The planet is for all of us and we cannot exist here by ourselves. Our existence here is not because of our economic activity. Right now, we are made to believe it is because of the percentages of growth that's happening in this country you will live well. No, we will live well here if everything is green, beautiful, water is flowing, air is pure, we will live well here. This idea has to go into every human being's mind, into every citizen's mind, into every child's mind. You must always be conscious of the life, other than human life. Most people are not even conscious of the human beings, so I am reminding you, you must be conscious of everything that is alive. A tree, a plant, a blade of grass, a grasshopper hopping, you must be alive to everything. Constantly the air around us is entering us and coming out of us and this is the basis of our life. What you exhale, the trees are inhaling. What the trees exhale, you are inhaling. There's a constant transaction going on. If we stop this process of breath for one minute, we understand that without transacting with the air around us, we cannot live for a moment. Similarly on the level of water and on the level of earth this transaction is going on. So how we keep the atmospheres around us, the water bodies around us will determine the nature and the quality of our life.

Is Chiropractic treatment for the spine safe?

Transcript: Dealing with the spine, being a chiropractor, I'm just wondering if the physical body can put limitations on what you commented on. I really don't know what a chiropractic does. I'm not aware of it, I just see the boards, chiropractic clinic, I just inquired what this is. And whatever people have told me, that's all. I really don't know what they do, but whatever they may be doing their knowledge of...

... the spine is from the outside by studying and that's how they know the spine. So when that is all the knowledge is, the best thing to do is only to help somebody, who is all messed up in his spine, to just relax. Trying to do anything more than that to the spine would not be good. All that is happening for most people is by improper attitudes, improper energy, improper postures. Spine tends to contract, you know. It should be like this but it tends to sit back and sometimes grate upon each other, and create tension, and pain, nervous pain. Sometimes very excuriating pain. So if you can help a person to relax and stretch out his spine, it's fine. But too much meddling with the spine is not good. In yoga, we have what is called as angamardana, literally means, anga means the limbs, or the body parts, mardana means to kill, to kill the body parts. So if you do angamardana, then everything in you will disappear from your experience, except your spine. Only the back of your head and your spine will be still in your experience, the rest of it will be like not in your experience. Like some of you are seeing when you sit for shoonya, your hands and legs seem to be missing. So the whole body will be missing, except the spine. So when you get a person into such conditions, then there are many things you can do with the spine. But that is not to be attempted in a chiropractic clinic, it needs a completely different atmosphere. It's not medical, you know, it's not a physical or medical thing, it's a different dimension. I think a chiropractic could help a person to relax his spine, I don't know what else is being done. You should tell me. Well, there are several philosophies on chiropractic and, I mean, it would take some time I guess to tell you. But forceful pushing of the spine could make a person very dependent on the chiropractic.

Benefits of applying Red Kumkum

Transcript: So you need to understand what's colour, first of all. The colour of any substance is not because of what it is. It is what it rejects, or what it gives away, or what it reflects. ... you understand? Yes. Something is red not because it's red, because it doesn't want red. That's why it looks red. So whatever you give away, that will be your quality in the world also, isn't it? So Devi's colour is red because she gives away red. Red means, if you're walking in the forest, it's all green. But there will be one spot of red somewhere, one red flower blossoming that draws your attention, because in your perception red is the most vibrant of all the colours. All other colours may be pretty, good, nice, but red is vibrant, vibrant, vibrant. Sindoor, you must understand, the important thing is that it is turmeric. That is, it's properly made. If you take the sindoor from the Devi, it's made of turmeric. If you buy elsewhere, it's a chemical powder. If you want to chemically poison yourself, you must use that. Turmeric has phenomenal benefits. So there is a certain way of using the turmeric. Turmeric and lime together makes this and it is very, very beneficial. And the colour turns red and it is also used as a symbolism in the society. If a woman is wearing sindoor, she's married. That means she's not approachable. Essentially, it was a social way of discerning who is who in the society. And it has certain health and other benefits to apply. Turmeric, the colour, is you don't want to put yellow color on your head like Mussolini. So red is better and it is also the colour of the Devi always. Not just here, always.

Are Tattoos harmful?

Transcript: So Sadhguru, I love tattoos. I have a lot of tattoos. And I'm sure a lot of people in this room do. So, when I got my first tattoo, there was a lot of clash of opinions between me and my parents. We fought a lot. They were like, why did you get this? So my question to you is, is getting tattoos something which looks unprofessional? Or is it something which lacks gravitas? Or, why? Why is this clash...

... of opinion? Well, the question is, at different times in your life, different things may mean a lot to you. At that moment, if you have yourself marked permanently. And today in United States, tattoo removal is a huge business. It's a bigger business than tattoo. Alright? Because, you know, when they were in college, they fell in love, they wrote your name all over the arm. And then it's over, then rubbing it off. You have to peel your skin. So, maybe it's better you wait before you tattoo yourself all over the place. To something that matters to you. If you want to write it on your forehead, it better be something that matters to you for the rest of your life. Because after one or two years if it falls off, then you'll have to peel your skin. Plus, also, see everything that you are, need not be written on your face. When you want to do work in the world, when you want to do things in the world, it's not necessary everything that you are is all up front. You must have, what to expose to whom, isn't it? So when I was in Kentucky correction center. It's a high security prison. There, there was one guy who's a tattoo maker. He makes tattoos. So I was doing a ten-day program for these prisoners, so they got really pally with me. Then, they revealed. I said, where do you get these tattoos within the prison? Everything is searched, okay? Even from your body or feces, everything is searched so that nothing goes in. But somehow this guy tattoos everybody at a tremendous price, okay? And he showed me all his tricks, how he tattoos. He breaks off one little thing of the fork, and sharpens it and sharpens it. Makes it into a needle. Anything little plastic he gets, bit and pieces of plastic he gathers, melts it all, and different colors. You should see the prisoners there, tattoooed from head to toe. ... when I got my first tattoo, there was a lot of clash of opinions between me and my parents. We fought a lot. They were like, why did you get this? So my question to you is, is getting tattoos something which looks unprofessional? Or is it something which lacks gravitas? Or, why? Why is this clash of opinion? Well, the question is, at different times in your life, different things may mean a lot to you. At that moment, if you have yourself marked permanently. And today in United States, tattoo removal is a huge business. It's a bigger business than tattoo. Alright? Because, you know, when they were in college, they fell in love, they wrote your name all over the arm. And then it's over, then rubbing it off. You have to peel your skin. Does sexual indulgence restrict the secretion of Amruta?

Transcript: Yes and no. In the sense, it is not the sexuality which limits it. But it is the excessive identity with the physicality, which limits it. So, it is not sexuality per say which becomes the barrier, but the attachment it creates to the physicality, which definitely becomes the barrier. This question is coming from certain amount of bits and pieces, the gossip that you have heard about how you could...

... assimilate your own semen and raise it up to your higher possibility. Yes, it is true. At the same time, it is not because of abstinence that one does it. It is because of internalising your energies, that you do it. It is not simply that somebody is abstaining from sex and suddenly his energies are all organized and it's going up. It's not true. If your energies get organized and begin to move up, the need for sexuality may evaporate for you. But it doesn't leave you incapable. It doesn't leave you impotent. But the need is gone. It is just no more a compulsive thing. And, it is not just this one thing. All compulsiveness is lost. Essentially, most of the sexuality that's happening on the planet is happening because of a certain compulsiveness, isn't it? It's a compulsive drive. When you become conscious, when all compulsiveness disappears, this also disappears. It is just that because people are so body-oriented, they're always thinking, spirituality versus sexuality. They're not connected. They're not connected, one is of the body, another is of a different dimension. It is simply because people are so, because religions of the world, moral schools and the ethical schools have been always speaking against it. It has become such a big issue in people's minds, they think the only way to know something beyond is, you must be away from this. Because somewhere, you're not able to accept the simple biology of a human being. Which is a tragedy, that you cannot accept the simple biology. You either have to celebrate it, or you have to push it down the drain. Both are not needed. You can look at it for the limitation that it is, and for the possibility that it is. So, if because of the impurity of sex, your spirituality is going to get disturbed, I want you to know that your very birth is impure. When you come from such an impure birth, where is the possibility for you?

What if I get Coronavirus?

Transcript: This question is from Chaitanya. Sadhguru, the cases in India are increasing and with the lockdown opening, it might pick up the pace. I would like to know, if I get Corona, how do I deal with it emotionally? Oh! The virus does not understand your emotions. So, don't deal with it emotionally. First thing, don't get it. But it may happen. Once you're out on the street, it may happen. So please don't...

... deal with it emotionally. No, no, no. That's not what I'm saying. How should I handle my emotion? This is what I was saying all this time. Your emotion, whatever is the sweetest point you hit in your life, the high point, you must keep it there. Don't bring it down. So, if virus gets you, you must deal with it sensibly. The most sensible thing is, if you get it, nobody else should get it from you. This commitment you must take. For yourself, for the sake of the nation, and for the sake of humanity. You must take this, in case you get it, it should not hop to one more person. It must stop here. Either we come out of it alive, or we die, or we come out whichever way. But, it should not go to one more person, this responsibility we must take. So there is no emotional stuff to it. You deal with it, it'll be little hard to breathe. People say, it's quite terrible because it feels like you're drowning. But then, now it is showing other symptoms also, various other kinds. So, we don't know what kind of sweet emotions virus has for you, or not. We do not know. We do not know if he has any emotions, he's just doing his business. Simply. He's just going about his business of survival. So you go about your business of survival. That's it. Just like the virus, alright? The virus is trying to survive upon you. You survive upon this planet, don't go away. No emotion needed for this. Just what is needed to hand yourself over to a doctor, whatever they have to do, they will do. You take instructions and just do that.

All this was very much there. But, we must also understand, life has changed. Today women are going to work. They have to get into that horrible bus, where they're pushed around. It doesn't matter she's pregnant. And all kinds of things. All kinds of fumes, all kinds of sounds, all kinds of noises, all kinds of abuse. Every kind of thing is happening to her. In some way, we're doing that to the child also. There is no job in the country, or in the world, where you can take off for one and a half years and get back to the job to fulfill this. For various reasons, we are not taking the business of manufacturing the next generation of people with sufficient care. We are not paying enough attention to it, for which we will pay a price. Over a period of time we will pay an immense price for that. But, we're definitely not taking enough care about it in the entire world, not just in this country. Because, we have got all kinds of social situations which do not allow that space for a woman to dedicate that kind of time and attention. See, being pregnant is not just about reproduction. We're literally manufacturing the next generation of people. Isn't it? Is it not important, of all the products that you produce on this planet, is it not most important that we produce wonderful human beings for the future generation? Is it not the most important? But, we have created a social situation, and an economic situation, where there is no such possibility to take care of these things. To whatever extent individual women, or individual families can take care of it, they can take care of it. But for the larger society, it is out of question because things have changed. You can't turn it back just like that.

So Bruce Lee made him stand here, he was at a swimming pool. The swimming pool was nine feet away. He was standing here, the swimming pool edge is nine feet away. He said, "You just stand here," and he kept his fist just three inches away from the journalist's body and hoo! The man went and fell in the pool. A 185 pound man went and fell in the pool with a three inch punch. Just that's all. No like this, just. That's all. Because you're using the Manipuraka, hoo! The man will just fly. Manipuraka could be mobile but that's not a good thing to do. Some of the people, who are into certain type of martial arts, are making their Manipuraka mobile to demonstrate certain things. That is not good at all. Once you learn to move your Manipuraka in a certain way, that too to do demos and stuff, such a person will not live long. So I'm not saying this only with this relation, because anyway he's dead, that's easy to say. Not in that context. Innocently they have shown these things in some of the things. There are yogis who move their Manipuraka and do things. Such people never physically move. They sit in the same place. Once your maintenance center is moved around, you don't move your physical body, you sit in the same place always. I think in some of these martial arts movies, innocently, not knowing what it is, they have shown this. Some old people are sitting, somebody falls down but they're always sitting. Have you seen this?

Your body is just soil – Treat soil with reverence for good health

If you make the raw material dirt, the product is bound to be dirt, isn't it? The most foolish thing that we have done in the name of science is, we have reduced everything in the universe into a commodity. In this culture, we don't see anything as a commodity. We see everything as ingredients of life. So this is why, food comes, water comes, air, the sky, the sun, the moon, a stone, a tree, anything. Because it's not something that you can use and throw. You cannot use and throw anything in this existence. It passes through you. It is you for a certain period of time. After that it becomes something else. You're only a relay runner, you're not the runner on the planet. Everything goes through you. The air that you're breathing right now, the very body that you carry right now, it has been millions of bodies in the past. It has been an insect, an animal, a snake, a cow, a monkey, a human being. I'm not talking about evolutionary process, I'm talking about the soil going through every form of life. So this is not a commodity. This is older than you, wiser than you, far more intelligent than you, far more capable than you, a far bigger process than you are as a person.

What light does to you is, it makes everything distinct. See now, because it is lit I can see this person, this person, this person, this person, this person. Suppose lights went off and this became dark. I just see a mass of people. I don't see this person, this person, this person. So there is a certain sense of lack of boundaries in the night. So for yoga, for sexuality, for friendship, for being together, for study, for focus, for all these things, night seems to be more conducive. Because the difference between what is you and what is the other comes down in the night. Simply because our visual apparatus functions like this. Where there is no light, everything merges in our experience. So a yogi, a bogie, and a rogue, all three of them make use of the night. You can also make use of it. There is no problem, unless you're sleeping in the classroom. If you're not sleeping in the classroom, it's fine, nothing wrong with it. But, you will see, you try this and see. For every position of the sun, moon, and many things that are happening to the planet, they're happening to you. You must become life-sensitive. Then, you will know how to manage every aspect of your life. Don't become ego-sensitive. Don't become society-sensitive. Life-sensitive, if you become, what's happening with this life, if you know this one thing all the time, you will see, you got your GPS on. There's really no problem, you will never get lost. Go for lukewarm showers, it makes you alert. So you will think, oh I cannot sleep. It doesn't matter. You will sleep 15-20 minutes or half an hour later, but you will sleep better because it will take away certain things. When you shower, it is not just the dirt on the skin that you are taking away. Have you noticed, if you are very tense or anxious whatever. Just a shower and you came out and feels like almost the burden has been taken away from you. Have you not noticed this? So it's not just about washing the skin. A whole lot of things happen when water flows over your body. This shower is a very rudimentary Bhuta Shudhi. Because over 70% of your body is actually water. If you run water over it, a certain purification happens which is beyond cleaning the skin. One more thing if you want to do, you just light an organic oil lamp. A cotton wick, some oil, anything, what do you use here? Normal cooking oil, linseed oil, rice bran oil, or sesame oil. What do you have? Olive oil. Fine. Any organic oil with a cotton wick. Just burn a little lamp somewhere in the room where you sleep. You will see these things will completely disappear. So everyday in the night, all of you should do this before you go to bed. Last three minutes, everything that you have gathered, the body, the content of the mind, things. Don't ignore small things, small things are big things. I've seen how people are carrying their own private pillow, you know. Because it's very important. So your pillow, your footwear, if you have relationships, everything that you have gathered, keep it aside. Sleep. If you sleep in that condition, you will wake up with much more light, with much more energy, with much more possibilities than you have imagined possible. Just sleep as life, not as a man, not as a woman, not as this and that. Keep everything down. Simply.
