Karma

Who keeps the accounts of karma – where are they kept?

Transcript: So karma is not about punishment and reward. Karma is not a book written somewhere, some ledger that somebody is looking at and punishing you or rewarding you. This gift culture from heaven must go because for all the things that you do very easily, you can pass this off as god's will. Many terrible things men have done, have always been passed off as divine will, all right? So it's very important...

... that we move people from religious beliefs to a responsible existence here because this is a brief life. If we want to make something out of this, this must be our making. This is our karma. This is what karma means. Karma means, when I say my life is my karma, it means that my life is my making. If I am doing well, it's me. If I'm not doing well, it's me. If I have a fantastic experience here, it's me. If I have a miserable experience, it's me. This much straightness of life everybody must get, that you're straight enough to admit that both your success and failure, your joy and misery, especially the inner things of joy and misery, peacefulness and turmoil, these things are 100% your making. This is what karma means. Karma is not a ledger up there. This body, this mind, this energy, is our ledger. Here it is and it plays out in so many ways. Internally, in terms of human experience, how joyful you are, how peaceful you are, how loving you are, how wonderful is your experience of life, this is entirely your karma. Because the pleasantness of the body, the pleasantness of the mind, the pleasantness of our life energies and our emotions, are 100% in our hands. Human experience happens from within. That means it's entirely our karma. We can make it the way we want. If we make our human experience very pleasant on all these four levels, in body we're healthy and exuberant, in mind we are peaceful and joyful, in emotion we are loving and compassionate, in our life energies we are blissful and edging on ecstasy. Now outside situations will not determine the nature of our experience. Outside situations, we can strive to improve, we can try strive to change. But as I said, in the outside situation there are many pieces, all those pieces don't belong to us. We also are one piece depending upon one skill, intelligence, capability and willingness to strive. That piece can be enhanced but it is never 100% yours or mine, the outside situation. It is also the times in which we exist which determines what kind of situations we are in. But human experience is entirely our karma and we must take charge of that first. If we take charge of this, our ability to create external situations also the way we want it, is greatly, greatly enhanced.

Your Karma changes when you turn 21

Transcript: Well, the genetic memory has a certain level of significance till you're 21 years of age. At 21 years of age, something very fundamental changes in the system. That, the genetic memory becomes less dominant. It just starts playing minimal role. Many, many parents are surprised, how the children who are so attached to them just some time ago, suddenly they crossed 21 years of age, suddenly they cannot...

... relate the same way with their parents simply because their genetic memory becomes at a lower scale of function once 21 years of age is over. This is nature's way of building up a kind of a safety mechanism for our growth because a human child doesn't come like other animals. The other animals, 90% of what they should be is already fixed by their genetics. Only 10% of evolution in their lifetime. That too they can either exploit it or not. But with a human being, only 10% is fixed, 90% is left to individual human being. Because of this, the early stage of development for a human child is much more fragile, needs much more atmosphere, needs much more nurture, because 90% has to be created. Only 10% is already there as a standard. So by 21 years of age, your genetic influence would have come down significantly unless you're very unnaturally attached to your parentage. Either because they have too much wealth, or because they are very dominant, or because you admire them too much. Whatever. Otherwise the genetic influence will come down naturally. So after that the karmic influence is a much bigger influence than the genetic influence. When we say karmic influence, we should not, because there is this wrong perception that karma means, it is only talking about something that comes from elsewhere, elsewhere from another life or whatever. It's not like that. From this morning, from the time you got up to this moment, your body is doing its own physical karma. Mind is doing its mental karma. Emotion is doing its emotional karma. Energy is doing its energetic karma. Every moment, in wakefulness and sleep, it's happening. But let us take into account only the wakefulness. From the moment you got up till now, how much of these four aspects of karma have you performed consciously if you look at it? I don't want to ask you the question, I would normally ask but with you, you are all doctors I won't ask you the question. I will just say this, you please analyze this yourself. Not even 1%. Way below 1% is what you're conscious of. Everything else is happening unconsciously. Or in other words, instead of using the unconscious word which is a kind of a negative word, let's say you're happening automatically. You're happening automatically because of the karmic memory. You have so much memory that you don't have to really think. You don't have to think how to eat. See when the first time, as a child, eating was such a big thing, you know. Especially Indian food, it was falling all over you. But today, very efficiently you eat, but you don't think exactly how to hold the food, what to do because this memory has been built up with your karma. Karma means action. These four dimensions of action are always building things up to make life easier for you, not to entangle you. So it's a web of karma that you create. But when you create a web, you must have a certain, you know, you must have some kind of a solvent that you don't get stuck in it.

How to use Karma for your well-being?

Transcript: Ultimately, life is neither suffering nor bliss. It is what you make it. It's of utmost significance in human life to have this fundamental understanding that human experience is generated from within us. So if what is generated from within us happens to be either pleasant or unpleasant, but we are attributing it to various other life situations. This simply means we are conducting our life unconsciously...

... to a point we do not know what we are creating. We are not aware of the very experiences that we are creating from within. Being blissful or in a state of suffering is not a natural consequence of your birth or, life situations in which you have landed. It is a consequence of the way you respond and experience these situations. This is why karma is very important. To understand the nature of karma, how it is stored within us, and how we can use this to our well-being, to make our life into a beautiful experience irrespective of what sort of situations we are placed in. This is what karma means. That means, you determine the nature of your response and experience to all that happens to you.

Do your genes rule you? Is it possible to break the genetic grip?

Transcript: So the reason why an individual human being may feel trapped in their own limited ways is simply because they are super identified with their memory. So one of the first steps in yoga is always this, that you start identifying with your ignorance never with your knowledge. Because your knowledge, it doesn't matter how vast it is, it is minuscule in this cosmos. But our ignorance is boundless. So to...

... blow the maximum bubble that you want, first and foremost thing is you do not identify with your knowledge. That means you do not identify with your accumulated memory. Accumulated memory, on a superficial level, may be just what I learnt. But on a deeper level, it is my genetics, it is my evolutionary memory, it is all the different dimensions of memory. So one fundamental thing we do, which is something, which would be very interesting for doctors like you to study is, we do certain things with people so they'll become free from their genetic memory as far as possible. Except for the physiological factors, we want them to be released from their parentage. This is the purpose. The entire Eastern cultures were focused on this. Now it's all messed up, people have forgotten this. Otherwise one thing is, we are always seeing how to distance ourselves from the genetic memory because we saw that if you are identified with your genetic memory, you will just be a replay of your parents life. You will not be a fresh life. If you want to be a genuinely fresh possibility, you have to distance yourself. There are many types of processes through which we distance ourselves from genetic memory. You must see this, it's so dramatic. In the sense, in 24 hours' time, the human being changes completely. The very way they think, feel, understand, and perceive life. With some of them, even their facial features will change. Suddenly they look different within 24 hours' time. The change is so dramatic. So what do you do? Like him, I also delink. For a different purpose but, it's in a way alienating from the genetic memory so that your functionality is not limited to your genetics. That you are not a copy of the parents who produced you. Yes, they have given your body, they have nurtured you to a certain adulthood, after that their business is done. Now your business is to become a totally new potential of life. That's what it is. But this will not happen. You will see this happening with people. When they were 16, 18, they're very rebellious about how they want to be. But you watch the same people after they're 45, they're behaving just like their parents. They walk like them, sit like them, talk like them, everything coming back, catching up with them. Because the genetic memory overpowers the initial desire and exuberance of youth. Once it begins to receive, you will see you start behaving just like your parents. Because the genetic memory overpowers you.

A crash course on Karma

Transcript: So when we utter the word karma, it is not one simple formula. Or it's not, you know people are saying theory of karma. We are not talking about any theory. We are referring to a certain reality. Karma means memory. Action and memory. Past action exists only in the form of memory, isn't it so? Yes? Memory, not just what you carry here. Every cell in the body carries its own memory. Why one atom behaves...

... differently from another atom, though the same ingredients is, it has a memory. A hydrogen atom has one kind of memory, oxygen atom has another kind of memory. Unless you mix them up, they will continue to behave like that. It is in a small circle. You are in a little larger circle. The universe is in a much larger circle. But the same memory rules all of it. So when we say karma, we are not talking about some concept or philosophy. We are referring to a certain reality which is finding manisfestation as who you are. The very shape of your body is because of memory. If a bird eats a mango, it becomes a bird. If a worm eats a mango, it becomes a worm. If you eat a mango, you become a human being. Same mango, how many things it's doing, depending upon what kind of memory it carries. Isn't it? What you call as a seed. In the same soil if you plant an apple seed and a mango seed, this will only produce apples, this will only produce mangoes because seed is a certain amount of memory, isn't it? Whether it is a seed of a plant or your father's seed which enters your mother's womb, it is just memory, and memory, and memory, isn't it so? This is karma. And this goes right back. Right upto the elemental level, everything is memory. Only the pure element is free from memory. So the idea. When we start, we starting off Bhutesha because that's the most important thing that he mastered the element. That's why we bow down to him. Because he mastered the elements. He has an eye which has no memory. A taintless eye which sees everything just the way it is. So yoga essentially means developing an eye which is not contaminated by memory. Which simply sees. It does not see things the way your memory perverts it. It simply sees everything the way it is. This eye will see those things which do not stop light. Right now these two eyes can only sees what stops light. If you start seeing something that does not stop light, that means another dimension of the eye is beginning to function.

How to control your destiny?

Transcript: Let's understand this. Karma means action. So when you say karma, you're referring to action. The four type of acts, four types of actions that you're performing right now, as you sit here. Your body is doing something, physical action. Your mind is doing something, mental action. Your emotions are doing something, emotional action. Your energies are doing something, energy action. These four dimensions...

Since today morning, since the time you woke up, I will excuse you for the times when you were sleeping. From the time you woke up till this moment, how much of this, what percentage of these four actions are you conscious of? That's a question. How much percentage do you believe you're conscious of from morning to now, these four types of actions? Well below 1%, isn't it? So 99+ of your karma, your action is unconscious. Suppose, unconsciously I am taking something and throwing like this, all over. And this keeps coming and falling on my head. I think it's being dropped from heaven because I'm unconscious that I am throwing all these things. When 99% of your actions, or over 99% of your actions, are unconscious, you always think something is being done to you, isn't it? Why forever people have been talking about being conscious is just this. If you raise it to 2%, suddenly it looks like your destiny is in your hands. If you have mastery over your physical body, 15 - 20% of your life and destiny will be in your hands. If you have mastery over your mind, 50 - 60% of your life and destiny is in your hands. If you have mastery over your life energies, 100% of life and destiny is in your hands.

What is Karma?

In the first part of the article Sadhguru explains what is Karma - the past impressions of life. Sadhguru also tells us the distinction between, Sanchita Karma, and Prarabhda Karma. Sadhguru shares a simple way one can start breaking ones physical Karma. Sadhguru says - "Depending on what kind of impressions you took in, whether it was hatred and anger, or love and joy, you accordingly have a certain kind of personality – usually every human being is a complex mixture of these things. Once you allow this karmic structure to build beyond a certain point, there is really no such thing as freedom. Everything that you do is conditioned by the past. If you want to move in the direction of liberation, one of the first things that you need to do is to loosen the grip and shackle of karma."

Does positive thinking work?

Positive thinking is dangerous! Sadhguru says - "The nature of the mind is such that if you say, 'I do not want this,' only that will happen in your mind. If you say, 'I do not want the negative,' only that will happen." Instead of looking at things as positive and negative, we should essentially be looking at the situation and act accordingly. Sadhguru explains, that the who existence is happening between two dualities - "What you refer to as positive and negative is: masculine and feminine, light and darkness, day and night. Without this, how will life happen? It is like saying you do not want death, you want only life – there is no such thing. Only because there is death there is life. Only because there is darkness there is light. It is just that you should not allow the negative to overwhelm you. Let both of them be there and see how to make both of them productive."

How is Karma Connected To Liberation (Moksha)?

Karma means action. Action is performed at four levels, at the level of body, mind, emotion and energy. Most of the actions you perform are unconscious, but their residual memory builds within you. Though Karma is being projected as 'reward and punishment', it is not that. Karma means, building up memory. It means, life is entirely your making. In the Indian culture, God is not the goal, the ultimate goal is always liberation. Mukti or liberation means to wipe out the Karmic information that you have gathered.

So, everyone's energy, prana, behaves a certain way because of this karmic bondage. Simplistically, portions of the energy are allocated for action, emotion, thought process and for your experiential dimension. In contemporary society, the energy allotted for emotion is no finding expression, leading to deviations and all kinds of mental health issues. The physical activity has also drastically reduced. This unused energy can also cause disease.
