Do outside influences during pregnancy affect the baby?

Transcript: If you do not know this. Maybe Northern part of the country it's largely, almost gone totally, in South it's still little alive in the villages, but there also it's wiped out quite a bit. If you do not know this, from preconception to conception to various stages of pregnancy, and delivering, and as long as the mother is feeding the child, there's an entire established process in this country. As to...

... how a woman should be, what should she do, what kind of people she should interact with, what kind of forms she should look at, what kind of forms she should not look at, what kind of sounds she should hear, what kind of sounds she should not hear. All this was very much there. But, we must also understand, life has changed. Today women are going to work. They have to get into that horrible bus, where they're pushed around. It doesn't matter she's pregnant. And all kinds of things. All kinds of fumes, all kinds of sounds, all kinds of noises, all kinds of abuse. Every kind of thing is happening to her. In some way, we're doing that to the child also. There is no job in the country, or in the world, where you can take off for one and a half years and get back to the job to fulfill this. For various reasons, we are not taking the business of manufacturing the next generation of people with sufficient care. We are not paying enough attention to it, for which we will pay a price. Over a period of time we will pay an immense price for that. But, we're definitely not taking enough care about it in the entire world, not just in this country. Because, we have got all kinds of social situations which do not allow that space for a woman to dedicate that kind of time and attention. See, being pregnant is not just about reproduction. We're literally manufacturing the next generation of people. Isn't it? Is it not important, of all the products that you produce on this planet, is it not most important that we produce wonderful human beings for the future generation? Is it not the most important? But, we have created a social situation, and an economic situation, where there is no such possibility to take care of these things. To whatever extent individual women, or individual families can take care of it, they can take care of it. But for the larger society, it is out of question because things have changed. You can't turn it back just like that.

How to be with your child?

Transcript: So whenever a child enters people's lives, they always think, it's time to teach. No. When a child enters your life, it's time to learn. Because, between you and your child, who is more joyful? So who should be a consultant for life? Definitely he's better qualified than you, isn't it? You have to teach him a few survival skills that he will learn anyway. You can also guide him a little bit. But when...

... it comes to life, he's able to make any simple situation a joyful situation. So definitely he must be the consultant for life, isn't it? It doesn't matter how glum you are, if you have a child in your house, unknowingly you will laugh. Unknowingly you will play. Unknowingly you will dance. Unknowingly you will crawl under the sofa. These are not things you have done for a long time. So, the most important thing is, don't infect the child with what you call as adulthood. This is not adulthood, okay? This is just suicide in installments. With anything he can make a situation wonderful for himself. It doesn't matter what. You give him a piece of wood, with that he makes his life for the whole afternoon, isn't it? You have to learn to live like him. And, see when you were growing up, whatever problems you had, did you go to your parents or to your friends? Whom did you share it with? Friends. Why is it that parents, who have been with the children right from day 1, can't be good friends? You just have to get off your pedestal. That's the most important thing. And then be a friend. If he has anything, you should be the first person that they share with, isn't it? Yes? That's a very important safety net for the child. It doesn't matter what their problem is, if you leave that level of openness and friendship with them, if they come to you first, there is every possibility that they won't get lost on something, isn't it? Especially, in a society like this, where the moment the child steps out, you don't know what influences are going to catch him up. The most important thing is this, that parents should get off their pedestal and start treating them as equals. This has to happen right from childhood, you know. That he never sees you as somebody who is pushing him around or bossing around or all the time advising him about something. That you are very much a friend, he can talk to you and you talk to him as an equal. If this is maintained right from the beginning, when he is developing and there are possibilities and that he is taking wrong steps and things like that, you will be the first person he comes to. That is something we have to build, isn't it?

Stop fear based education – fear is the biggest obstacle to success

Transcript: I think it's pathetic. A human being has to construct their life. Human beings have to construct their lives, all the time thinking about how to earn a living. An earthworm, a grasshopper, a bird on the tree, all of them earn their living, isn't it? With such a big brain, you're supposed to do something little different than just earn a living. Earning a living should be the most basic thing. With...

... a millionth of your brain you can handle it. But, we have raised, earning a living, to the heavens today unfortunately. Entire system is about how to earn a living, how to earn a living. This is a way of completely destroying human intelligence. This is a way of tarnishing human genius in every possible way because how to earn a living has become the greatest thing in the world. Why people are driving you in this direction is, because they've built one fake economic engine which they have to feed all the time. They have to feed it all the time. Because of this we're sacrificing our children as a fuel for this economic engine that we have built. It is time, at least a niche amount of children are not concerned about how they will earn their living. When I was growing up, not for a moment I had this thought in my mind, how will I earn my living. My father used to be worried, what will happen to this boy, there is no fear in his heart about anything. One day I turned around and asked him, "When did fear become a virtue?" I'm saying, we are bringing up children with this fear, "If you don't pass, you know what will happen to you?" Continuously fear-based education. That is you don't get these many marks, you're finished. 18,000 children in 2015 have committed suicide in our country. When our children commit suicide, we must know we are doing something fundamentally wrong. There's no question about it anymore, isn't it? Children are fresh life, exuberant life. If children have to take their own lives, there is no worse thing that can happen to your society. Isn't it so? Is there a worse thing that can happen to a society. I'm asking you, is there a worse thing? Many of you are parents, is there a worse thing than this? That your child, less than 12/13 years of age, committed suicide. Can you ever recover from that, I'm asking. This is the most horrible thing that can happen. And this is happening because, in our country 98 is pass mark. Yes? Even if you get 98, parents will ask what happened to the other 2%? So we, as educators, if we are really responsible human beings, we need to turn this around. It's very, very important. And this is a crucial time. All these years there has been a certain economic deprivity in the society where they wouldn't listen to anything. Earning a living was everything. At least we're on a threshold of an economic possibility. This is the time to change the mentality of education. This is the time for the parents and the children to look at it little differently.

How important is spirituality in school education?

Transcript: See when we say, when we use the word spiritual. The moment you utter this, everybody has their own misconception about what it could be. So let me put it in proper perspective. You must understand, the moment you refer to somebody as spiritual, the word seeker also goes with that. You're a spiritual seeker. You're not a spiritual believer. You are referred to as a believer if you adhere to a certain...

... religion. But you're referred to as a seeker the moment you say, "I'm spiritual." A student is a seeker, isn't it? A scientist is a seeker. A teacher must become a seeker, it's very important. So spiritual process in its essence is a must for education because they have to be active seekers. Whether it is physics, or chemistry, or biology, or spirituality, essentially it is the seeking for the truth of the matter in that particular aspect of life. Isn't it? What else is education? Education is about seeking truth, maybe not the ultimate truth, but right now what we're looking at. We want to know the truth about it, we don't want to know some rubbish about it, we don't want to believe something about it. We want to know the truth about it. If you look in a microscope, we want to know the truth about an amoeba. We don't want to know, we don't want to believe what an amoeba is. We want to know the truth about it. So, a student is a natural seeker. A spiritual process should bring the discipline into a student. See not to believe anything, but at the same time not to become abusive and disrespectful of things around you, takes a lot of discipline. I don't believe a thing that you say. But still, to listen to you takes a certain amount of discipline and culturing. This culturing is a must for a student that every human being should learn. I don't have to believe anything that you say but, I have the necessary regard, respect, and inclusiveness to sit and listen, or to raise a question and object. This is something that has to come into your society, if human thought process has to rise to a different level. If you abuse people, people will get restricted. If you don't question them, they will get restricted. Questioning without abuse. Questioning respectfully, everything that happens around us, is most important and this is the fundamental of spiritual seeking. So spiritual process is a must for any genuine student.

Competition is good

Transcript: Namaskaram Sadhguru. So, I'm saying that the idea of competition is so much ingrained in our minds. Not even at the school level, but even at the postgraduate level. Or any aspect of our lives, that it creates a lot of unnecessary stress, so what can be really done about this? Competition is a good thing. If you're incompetent and you're in competition, you will feel stressed. If you want to be in...

... a competitive situation, the thing is you have to work on your competence. Right now the problem is, you're tweaking your desire, you're not tweaking your comptenece. This is what has to happen, that we must teach children to tweak their competence, not their desire. We're calling this ambition, we're calling this goal-orientedness. Ambition means what, you tweaked up your desire. You'll suffer invariably. If you tweaked up your competence, you will see, wherever you go you're doing better than what people expect you to do. So naturally, things will go well for you. Competition is not the bad thing. Lack of competence is the bad thing. We must understand this. In this country, this is very important because we still think our education is cooked in heaven. Because people tell me temples are crowded just before the examination. Just the wrong place to be. Just the wrong place to be. When your examination is coming, you sitting in the temple is just the wrong place to be. In the vacation you sat in the temple, great. So instead of competence, we have big desires. If you focus enough on enhancing your competence, you will see there is such joy in breaking limitations everyday and becoming something better. You don't care a damn how somebody else is doing. Yes? If everyday, if you're breaking limitations, if you're breaking the limitations of who you are. If your competence you're working constantly to expand, you don't even have the time to look at somebody. How is he doing. Because this is such a great thing happening within you. So please focus on your competence. Competition you don't bother. If you're good, you'll be on the top. Otherwise, you'll be somewhere. It's okay.

How to become a good parent?

Transcript: Fundamentally we must understand, life needs nurture, atmosphere. Not fixing. Nothing to be fixed about it. It just needs an atmosphere where it will flourish best. ... We want everything ready-made, we are looking at a ready-made solution. There's no ready-made solution to life. Life can only happen with enormouse involvement. There's simply no other way to do it. Where there is no involvement, there is no experience of life. Isn't it? Hello? Whether it's a simple food that you eat, or something that you look at, or who you live with, or what you do, or at the highest level whatever you'll do in your life. Without involvement, there is no life. But right now, modern societies are trying to do life with information, not with involvement. This is a big mistake. You have no information about your child. You can go to all the variety of doctors and get all their ideas about what your child is. All they will tell you is that he is sick in a hundred different ways. Okay? No, you don't need any information about your child, you need involvement. With involvement, you will bring that life to its best. It need not be as good as somebody else, or as bad as somebody else, because it's a unique life. Is there one life like another? It's a unique life. But, right from day 1 we are comparing it to another life and trying to make it like that one. This is a very cruel process for the child. The child never understands what the hell the parents want. I never understood. Nobody ever explained to me, why the hell I should go to school. So I never went. Because nobody explained to me why I have to go to school. They said, no no, you have to go to school. Why? I'm doing fine. Why should I go to school? No, because we think information is going to transform us. No. Information facilitates a few things. But it's involvement which transforms us, isn't it? Absolute involvement in something, it doesn't matter what it is. Total involvement with something, suddenly you find that human being is of a different nature, isn't it? So, that's all it takes. Involvement.

How to bring up your children

Transcript: We must understand this, a child is not an industrial product. A child is a life, a fresh life. You are supposed to nurture this life. It's not that you put it through some kind of an industrial process called a school. It's like an industry. ... This is not what human life is about. There is an innate genius in every human being. Do we have the patience and the commitment and the dedication to pay the necessary attention to bring that out in a specific human being? That's a big question. Otherwise, you will produce dumplings. All the same. Okay? So, once you have a child, before you have a child, you must understand. A child means a 20 year project, full on. That is if they do well. If they don't do well, it's a lifelong project. Because it's a life. One life may blossom at 12, another may blossom at 40. Do you have the patience to nurture that life? Or have you already set the thing, by the time you finish high school you must be in this university, that university, you must be doing this or that? It's all fixed up. Common prescription for all life. This is what we're doing, this is supposed to be civilization. This is not civilization, this is just escape from life. We want to escape the fundamental process of life. In tribal societies and other traditional societies, even today, nobody expects a man or a woman has to become like this at a certain time. Depending on each life, how they progress, everybody is valued for who they are. If you plant this chrysanthemum in your house, in three months it's full of flowers. If you plant an oak tree, 80 years, 10 years, nothing happens. So you want to chop it down? Hello? None of them would be. If you went by these standards, see this one, how well it is doing, in three months how many flowers. You fool you're doing nothing. This is not the way to handle life, isn't it? This is not an industrial product.

Go here for your next vacation – especially if you have children

Transcript: If you can find a place where there are no sounds of machines and your cell phone will not ting ting. Quietly if you can listen to the sound of the trees, the breeze, the water. Just the natural sounds. If you pay enough attention, tremendous things will happen to you. Many times I've been in the South Indian, you know, their kind of tropical rainforests. The longest I've been there, through the jungle,...

... for about 23 days alone. No any kind of support, no cell phone for sure, those days, not even a torchlight. And fourth day I ran out of the food that I was carrying. So I lived off the forest. By about the eighth day, I lost my jacket and one half of my shirt because I was chased by some animals in that whole thing. I had half a shirt and pants. And, I walked through, this is elephant country, tiger country. I saw tigers, panthers, elephants, all kinds of, wild buffaloes. Various kinds of animals. Very close quarters. But, at the end of it, when you look back, what is the biggest impact on you? It's the insects. It's in the nights, the orchestra that goes on in the rainforest. Oh my god! It's unbelievable. And the timing. Everyday, night, 2:15, means one group will stop and the other group will start. Really. Their sense of time. Everyday, exactly, by the second. One group will stop, another group will start. And you don't know what they're talking about. They're definitely talking something that you don't know, for sure. They're not just making dumb noises. So if you just sit there and listen and listen and listen and listen, slowly, you start noticing there is a pattern and an organization to this. Which is far bigger than any human symphonies that you can achieve. Far more complex and far more intense. I think it's very important for every human being. Particularly if you have children, vacation need not be Disneyland. I'm not against it, but one trip is enough. All silly stuff which excites you. Vacation should be into nature. If you can take your children, walk in a jungle, not in a resort. Just live on a mountain, expose them to nature. I will tell you, you will bring up your children not only physically healthy, mentally healthy, far more sensible and accepting and wonderful kind of human beings if they know how to. Because once you go into nature, whose son you are, whose daughter you are, what are you in the city, doesn't matter. Okay? It's very important that everybody experiences that, otherwise you start creating your own illusions as to who you are. And you start believeing it for sure.

How much freedom should kids have?

Transcript: Full Transcript: See this idea that we have to raise our children is a very Western idea. You just have to allow them to grow. You should not raise them. You only raise cattle. ... children get used to the word freedom. You must always bring a sense of responsibility for their well-being, their health, their growth. And their ability to respond to every dimension of life. This must be brought into their life. If there is necessary, responsible existence, freedom is a consequence. This is the fundamental problem we have in the world today because we have become goal-oriented. We're interested in the consequence, we're not interested in the process. If you want flowers in the garden, you don't talk about flowers. If you're a good gardener, you will never talk about flowers. You will talk about soil, manure, water, sunlight. If you manage these things, wonderful flowers will come. Similarly if you manage the conditions necessary for a beautiful blossoming of a child, then children will blossom. But if you try to raise them according to the moulds that one may hold in their minds, every child will rebel because no life can fit into the moulds that you create in your mind. Life cannot fit into the moulds of the mind. Mind has to fit into our life. This must be understood. So let's not have big ideas about how to raise a child. Just maintain an atmosphere of absolute love, joyfulness, and responsibility. Above all, in their parents, let the children never see resentment, jealousy, frustration, depression, anger. You will see your children will blossom absolutely wonderfully because if you take care of the process, the results will come. But if you're focused on the consequence and not taking care of the process, your consequence, or the consequence that you desire, will just be a dream.

The only real solution to phone addiction

Transcript: So, technology is not to be blamed. We have not addressed human compulsive nature. Human compulsiveness can only be addressed with consciousness. More conscious way of existing. To become conscious, there are many tools. We have not propogated this large scale in our society. It has to become a part of our existence. ... they know when to use what and how much to use. It's individual choice. About radiation. I want you to understand, most probably, it is like, you know, we initially used to think only those who are smoking are going to get affected. But then we realized passive smokers may be more affected than the smoker himself or herself. So similarly, somebody else may be using technology around you, there is wifi in your house. People are using telephones all around you. So you cannot escape that radiation. Yes, it has some consequences. But at the same time, the amount of life that it facilitates, we're willing to make a trade off with it to some extent. But, to what extent you wish to use technology must be your personal choice. Coming to social media. Social media is much easier to handle than a live society. When live society was there, your friends, your family, your mother-in-law, your husband, wife, this, that, everything. When they cling to you you can't switch them off. Social media, if you don't like it, you can turn off your phone. So I think this mode of interaction gives you much more freedom than the ancient way of interacting with society. Because if you went about the town making lot of friends, you got entangled in so many ways. Today you're making friends only by sending messages. When you don't want, you can keep your phone off. And, it's a done thing. So these are all wonderful conveniences that have come into our life. But, many people are making this also into a great problem and this is an illness in their lives. So the greatest things that are given to you can become your enemy if you don't learn how to use it responsibly. This goes for everything. Not just for gadgets in your hand. This goes for your car, this goes for your food, this goes for your everything that you're using in your life, including your brain. If you don't realize how to use it, if it becomes a compulsive process, then it can take your life.

If both parents are working, will the child be lonely?

Transcript: When I was growing as a child, both my parents were working. And there were times when I was feeling lonely and very miserable. Although, my parents did give their part of comfort to me, there were times I was feeling lonely on the inside. And, what can our future parents, or what can we do to our kids, to not feel the same way? Thank you. Well, in India, this is the first generation where women have...

And if they went somewhere to the field, they took the children and went. So, always, like you see ducks and chickens, if the hen goes, behind that the chicks run. Like that children were always running behind women. So she was always doing her work, and still managing and tending to them. And they was a certain cohesiveness to that. But today women are going to the office, or to the factory, or to some other business. So they can't take their children there. This is the first generation of women who've stepped out. So in the society, we still don't have arrangements. Proper arrangements, where children can be properly tended to. That system, that facility, and that arrangement, is simply not happened in the society yet. I hope it happens quickly because it's very important. It doesn't mater whether it's a biological parent, or somebody else, but children need a loving, caring atmosphere. It's very important. Just putting nourishment into their stomach is not the only thing. They need some tending, attending to. Somebody should smile at them, somebody should laugh at them, somebody should do something with them, play with them. This is very needed. Otherwise, children will grow up little sick in their head. It is not necessary only a biological mother should do it, but there must be a committed person doing this. It's very, very important for the child. Unfortunately in this society, we still don't have those arrangements.

Why should children learn Yoga?

Transcript: See everybody can drive a car today. But not everybody can hold the car on the road at 200km/hr. They'll fly off. Because for that you need a lot of understanding, of how the machine functions. Similarly, if you function at a rudimentary level in your life, everybody will eat, sleep, reproduce, and die. But if you want to raise a human being to a higher level of function, then there has to be a more...

... profound understanding and perception of who we are and how we function. So this is what yoga is. If we bring this at an early age, free of all cultural trappings we can bring it. In such a way that it's purely scientific and logically correct way of doing things. If we bring this across the world into every child's life, you will definitely find a more peaceful and joyful adults as they grow up. Why is this important? There is substantial, medical, and scientific evidence that only when you're peaceful and joyful, does your body and mind function at its best. If you want to be successful, your body and your mind should function at its best. There's no question about it. This, at least this much must happen to every child. If this has to happen, it is important that children do not form strong ideas about anything. That their life remains a possibility to explore their life, throughout their life. The aspect of exploration should remain alive. The aspect of having a certain sense of wonder to everything that we see, must be there. By believing things, by attaching, or identifying with certain ideologies and philosophies, we become dead sure about everything. When we become dead sure about everything, if somebody else believes something else, then clashes will happen. The fundamental aspect of education is to expand our horizons. Unfortunately, it's just working the reverse way. Simply because we are putting set ideas into children's minds. So yoga will undo that damage. That it will not allow a human mind to become established in that way. This means. What this fundamentally means is, the nature of existence is uncertain. In this uncertainty, you're trying to create false sense of certainty. Either you simply, falsely believe that this ocean is going to be always calm like this, and I'm going to say lower this. Or, you learn to navigate through a violent, unpredictable ocean. You learn to navigate through that. Either you're equipped for it, or you're not. So yoga is that aspect which clearly celebrates the uncertainties of life. We are not trying to create a certainty. We're just trying to equip ourselves to handle uncertainty.

How do I handle conflict with my parents

Transcript: We see quite a generation gap between our generation and our parents' generation. And it sometimes so happens that we.. Not me. No gap between you and me. I'm much younger than you. So how do we deal with...

... that conflict? See. Please sit down. This is not a problem with your generation. This is a problem, unfortunately, with every generation. I think it's very silly that every generation has the same problem. If we're in a learning mode, at least we must have a new problem. Isn't it? Every generation has the same problem. Though they were also youth, just 25-30 years ago, somehow they suddenly act like they landed just like as they are today. So, because your parents are not here I can't talk to them. So we'll talk to you. If you want to craft your life the way you want, and what you want if it's not in concurrence with your parents, or the society in which you live in, or university in which you're studying. It can happen. What you choose may not be in line, not only with your parents' choices, may not be in line with your peers' choices. May not be in line with the instituion's choices. May not be in line with the society in which you live. So if you want to do your own thing, you must understand there will be a price to pay. Only thing you're complaining about is, how to have what I want without paying a price? There's no such life. If you want to do what you want, and if what you want is not in line with the larger interest of what is around you, then they will make you pay a price. If what you want means so much to you, you must pay the price. But if you find the price is too much for what little you want to do, you will step back naturally. It's like going to the market, you know. You went and want to buy a few flowers. That guy says 2000 bucks. For flowers, you say no. I want flowers, but no, because he's asking too big a price. This is so with every step in our life. When we want to do something, there will be a price attached to it. We must evaluate, do I want to pay this price? What I want, does it mean so much to me that I'm willing to pay this price? Or I'm not willing to pay this price. This is individual. There is no standard treatment for everybody. This is individual. Some people want it so badly, they're willing to pay any price. For some people it's a passing interest, so they will drop it and they will go on. There's nothing wrong with both. Both are fine.

Education is not about learning, its about learning to use yourself

Transcript: So, this is one thing you must address. Education is not just about learning. All this learning business will be useless and meaningless in the next five to ten years. ... memory as intelligence. Everything that you can do with your memory, a machine will be able to do better than you. So education is not just about learning. Education is about learning to use yourself. Learning to use your body, your mind, your emotion, everything in a certain way. It's very important that you know how to remain focused on something that doesn't mean a damn thing to you. It's very important. See, people who say that they lack concentration. They fall in love with the neighbourhood, somebody. Oh they fully concentrated. So it's not that they lack concentration. They say I don't have good memory. Show them a suspense thriller movie, every scene they will remember. So their memory is pretty good. Only thing is, they have not learnt to use their mind in such a way, it doesn't matter what, they can apply themselves. If that is not there, you will not make a headway with your life. All the time, world will not be throwing the kind of ball that you want to hit. You understand? When you go and stand at the cricket pitch, they're not going to throw the ball, the kind of ball that you want to hit. They will throw that ball that you cannot hit. Yes or no? Only when you hit that ball, that is difficult to hit, then people will say you're fantastic. Otherwise you'll be playing baby games all your life. I will do only what I like, I'll do only what I like. So why do you decide what you like and what you don't like. Whatever the hell you have to do, do it with full on. Whatever, it doesn't matter. Because this is not about learning, this is about learning to use yourself in the best possible way. Learning to use your body, your mind. Turning this into your tools. That you have the handle in your hands. Otherwise, if you leave it loose, this mind can cause you so much pain, you don't know.

Parenting Tip – You must spend dedicated time with your children

Transcript: Those who decide to have children must have dedicated time for the child. Not fitting in here, one ten minutes here, ten minutes there. You must have full fledged dedicated time because it is about making the next generation better than who we are. There is nothing special to be done, you don't have to buy a single toy. You just have to spend time. You just have to expose them to nature. You just have...

... to expose them to various forms of creation. But, just to get rid of the child, you bought him an iPad when he's five. See, you buy him an iPad when he's four or five, don't think it's out of your love. You're being strategic, you want to get rid of him. Get rid of him means, he opens up something, and something something something is happening on the iPad endlessly. So you can go about your business the way you want. I don't think it is necessary for such people to have children. Unless you're willing to have dedicated time, you should not do this crap. Not necessary. Once you have, you must have dedicated time. And first of all, you must fix yourself. You must become that kind of a person the child will look up to and love to be with. Then, even time can be adjusted. If they're really looking up to you, five minutes is worth five days. Five minutes of contact is like five days. Nothing to teach, what's there to teach. What is their to teach? What do you know about life that the child doesn't know, I'm asking. Survival tricks, don't teach them too early. This is a serious problem. These days, I think it's little less than what it used to be before. Three year old child, they're asking, "What do you want to become?" "I want to become pilot." "I want to become commando." These days everybody, all the boy want to become a commando because that's the games they like playing. Because I see in these games, somebody's head falls off. They may become Jihadi Johns. Because right from childhood, they're taking off people's heads. So what do you want to expose your children to is something that every parent needs to think about because it is exposure, it is not moral teaching which is going to stick. It is the exposure that the child is exposed to which is really going to stick right through their life. You must expose them to all the positive, wonderful things. Positive things does not mean right versus wrong. Simply life the way it is. I think, if people want to have children, this may sound extreme, but I would say, at least for two months in a year, those who have children should withdraw into natural space. Not live in their city burrows, or those bird nests of apartments. They must go away at least for two months. It's alright even if you have to live in a tent somewhere, but they must live in nature, the children. Very, very, very important. If you want to have your children physically, mentally healthy and balanced, it is the most important thing.

We just have to make people flexible and sharpen their intelligence, sharpen their perception. Whatever is needed, do that. Only thing is, you have to make him an intelligence in such a way that it's flexible and it'll quickly grasp what is around. Perception is sharpened, intelligence is sharpened, but you don't become a concrete block that I'm an engineer, I'm a doctor, I'm this and that. You becoming a concrete block, you can't change yourself. Does it mean to say, no subject needs any training? Yes, it will need. Many subjects need expertise which needs a certain level of application and training. I'm not questioning that. But you don't have to do it early on. Right now, from the age of 3, 4, they're telling I'm going to become an IT engineer, I'm going to become a start-up. Now it's all start-up. Or a doctor, engineer. Everything was doctor at one time, then it became little engineer. Now computer, now start-up. How many start-ups are non-starters in the country? Too many, unfortunately. Because you don't need a start-up cuture, engineering culture, something like this. What you need is that you're a solution seeking generation.

Your name is important – The name with which people call you has an impact on you

Synopsis: In this old video, Sadhguru says - "Now, we must name your child in such a way, that every time you call that name, something within them should open up". Sadhguru explains, that each form has a sound attached to it, and the sound has a corresponding form attached to it. This is the science of Yantra and Mantra. So, when a child is born, depending on the geometry of the solar system, one determines...

Parenting Tip – How to discipline your child

Transcript: If you want your children to consider the suggestions that you are making, don't try to discipline them. If it works, if you try to discipline them and it works. Unfortunately it means that you have dumb children. If they're smart, it just won't work. Really. Isn't it so? You don't like this? If they're just dumb, helpless children, it'll work. Otherwise your damn disciplining won't work. Yes, here...

... and there maybe you put your foot down a little bit. But that right also you get only because you've built a relationship. You've built a very close, friendly relationship. So somewhere, you can use your priviledge of being older than them and put your foot down in a few things. But you can't go about disciplining them. You must drop that idea from your mind. Because it won't work. If they don't like your discipline, it's just a few months away that they don't like you. If, a few years away, they hate your discipline, then you must know that much time away, they'll also hate you. No question about it. Isn't it? So don't get yourself into that situation. The most important thing is to provide him an atmosphere which is joyful, loving, and inspiring. Inspiring him to stand up and find his full potential. If this atmosphere is provided, you don't really have to worry about disciplining. Discipline wil happen byitself. Discipline does not mean control. Discipline means that you're focused towards knowing. The word discipline in English means learning, or to learn. So when you say I'm disciplined, that means you're always willing to learn. That you're not stuck in some mode. So discipline is not just doing something someway, you're willing to learn which way to do everything better. If you're constantly striving how to do everything better, you're disciplined. You're just doing something in a particular way, that's not discipline. If you bring yogic practices into a child's life, there is no way they cannot be disciplined. Discipline will happen to them.

No, it's your business to see because if you don't guide them somebody else will on the street. Or somebody will do it long distance on the internet, all kinds of creatures are out there. Alright. So, yes to protect them, to nourish them, to allow them to explore their possibilities. It is your business to do that as a parent. But parents' concern may be, what will happen, what will happen, what will happen? Tell me when you go through fear, is it fantastic? Hello? It's one of the most terrible emotions you can go through. Why are we thinking that we should be fearful of our future. Not only of your future, of anything that you do, even God-fearing alright. Fearful about everything. What is the point? There is no such thing. There is no such thing that this generation should be an extension of the previous generation. This generation should do something that previous generation could not imagine. That is when there is a purpose to this generation. Isn't it? Otherwise what's the point? If you're going to do the same things.

Transcript: If you are a parent - the important thing is, please don’t stand on a big pedestal. The only qualification you have is that you just came here a few years early. And of course, everybody hates that hierarchy. Looking up, neck hurts, you know. Nobody likes it. Because in trying to place yourself above, you are losing the possibility of being a good friend. If you are not a good friend, they are not seeking your advice. They are not just in the neighbourhood. Now, globally they seek answers. Okay? You don’t know where their friend is, their friend is in Timbuktu right now, not in the neighbourhood. A relationship is only possible when you are not on the pulpit, you are down on the ground like everybody else. On the same two feet. Then only it’s possible, then only there is a friendship. When there is a friendship, there is room for correction. When there is no friendship, you can say whatever you want, nobody is going to listen anyway. And if you go on giving advice after advice, they will just do the reverse, just to spite you. A whole lot of children do things just because it freaks the parents. Yes or no? They are doing it just to freak the parents, they just enjoy it because of this advice and advice and advice. Advice is sickening, nobody likes advice. But, if there was a bond of friendship, naturally they would listen. That’s what one should earn. The parents and teachers should earn the friendship of the new generation rather than thinking just because you came a few years early, you know the universe. There is no such thing. So just stop advising them. Just be friends with them, play with them, go to the cinema with them, listen to their kind of rap music, dance with them. You will see they will be fond of you. There will be a relationship. Once there is a relationship, you can do something, you can influence them.

Nag Ashwin – Why More Youth Today Are Consuming Alcohol and Drugs?

The survival needs of people are now taken care of - so, naturally people will look elsewhere for involvement. If they don't find anything, they will move towards more pleasure and more intoxication. Another reason is that children are not getting enough attention because both parents are working. Also, this generation does not believe in 'heaven' - so 'morality' which used to work, will not work now. The solution is, to keep children involved in sports and activities that keep them engaged with nature. They must experience the pleasures of the mind, emotion and consciousness - once that happens, then indulging in pleasures of the body will come down. And children should not know affluence till a certain age.

VVS Laxman – Should Kids Have Freedom To Do What They Want?

This is a must read for all the parents. Sadhguru simplifies this complicated problem for all parents, in a way that ones perspective on freedom is completely altered! Instead of raising children, we should allow them to grow. "Freedom" - is not a word that one should utter, and the children should also not get used to this word. What is important is to bring into their life a certain sense of responsibility. Once the necessary responsibility is there, freedom will be a natural consequence.

The Power Of ‘I Do Not Know’

This is a captivating read! Sadhguru tells us about his days at school, and why he always wanted to run away from it! Young people have always had questions, but they never really get addressed. Usually they are given some advice or sermons. We need to realize that 'I don't know' is the only doorway to knowing - so questions should be encouraged. And people should have the courage to seek clarity and invest their lives in finding the solutions to their questions.

Around the twelve week mark, only one chakra is formed in the fetus; the Muladhara. Then, in the first twenty eight to thirty two weeks, the first five chakras, upto Vishudhi, are formed. How much do Agna and Sahsrar (the remaining two chakras) get, varies for every human being. By observing an infant's eyeball movement, and the way they cry, you can tell if the Agna is established or not. Sahsrar is generally not developed for most. What Is ‘Right’ Parenting?

Though we are teaching the child alphabets, and mathematics, we are not investing any time in teaching them how they function from within. We have set wrong priorities in our education system. Sadhguru says - "A child needs an ecosystem. What kind of things are they exposed to, what are they doing with their lives, where are we trying to drive them?". Most parents, instead of cultivating the genius within the child, are driving them in a particular direction. Sadhguru says - "When the child was inside, you did nothing, right? Just nourished yourself well and waited. Just like that – provide the atmosphere and wait."

What’s wrong with the education system, and how to fix it.

Sadhguru says - "There are studies which say that if a child goes through twenty years of formal education and comes out with a Ph.D, seventy percent of his intelligence is irrevocably destroyed.". Today, it is the economic engine which is driving everything. The purpose of education is to broaden the horizons, which the current system is not doing. To change the education system, Sadhguru suggests that we need to 'upgrade' those who deliver education - "If we do this, every system will work well. If we are interested in the future generations, the best people in the world must go into teaching. What a child needs is inspiration, not just information."
