Why you must engineer yourself

Transcript: We must understand this. Engineering means, essentially to make things happen the way we want it. That's engineering, isn't it? To engineer this building means what? We want it the way we want it. We could have sat under a tree, but we choose to build this building because we want to sit under something engineered the way we want it. As suitable for us. We have conditioned the place because we want...

... the temperature in a certain way. All this we did, but is it not important that you engineer this the way you want it? Hello? Outside is air conditioned, inside is boiling, what's the point? I'm saying power is being wasted on you. In the last 100-150 years, with the advent of science and technology, we have more comforts and conveniences than any generation ever could imagine, isn't it? Yes or no? You have more comforts and conveniences than any generation could ever imagine, we are the most comfortable generation ever. Physically, materially. But can you say, are you the most peaceful generation? Joyful? Loving? No. Or can you even say you're the most intelligent generation? That'll be a wrong thing to say. Anybody who claims he's intelligent, amounts to foolishness, isn't it? Because the significance of intelligence is, it shows you how many loopholes are there in your intelligence. This means we have to engineer ourselves to fit in such a way. See a well-engineered machine means, least amount of friction, isn't it so? Yes? A well-engineered machine means what? Least amount of friction. Heavy friction means badly engineered, isn't it? Isn't that the understanding? So the fundamentals of yoga is this. The fundamentals of yoga is in the geometry of physical existence. If you understand the geometry of what this human mechanism is, the body is, the psychological structure is, the chemical processes are, the energy structures are, if you understand the geometry of this and become capable of observing the cosmic geometry. If these two things are well aligned, suddenly your life hits off like a magic. Your life is no more a miserable drag but it's magical simply because you have gotten the right geometry of things. Anything that is geometrically perfect will function absolutely smoothly and for a very long time. This is something that you must do to yourself when you're young. It doesn't matter what you want to do in your life. One thing must happen, your body and your brain should not come in your way. They must work for you. Yes or no? Hello?

Do we really need to control our mind?

Transcript: This has happened because people have become capable of suffering something that happened 10 years ago. Yes? You can suffer something that happened 10 years ago and you can suffer what may happen day after tomorrow. Already. So you are not suffering life, you're just suffering your memory and imagination because it's gone berserk. Because you did not take charge of it. Or in other words, the greatest...

... faculty of what makes us human has become the problem. The best thing we have here for ourselves, as human beings, is this cerebral capability. Otherwise, as a body, you are nothing much, you're really nothing much compared to a tiger, or an elephant, or so many other creatures. Yes or no? As a physical body you are nothing much compared to many creatures, isn't it so? But because we got this, we can remember our experience of life, from that we can create an imagination, from that we can create or manage to plan and manifest what we want in our lives. Now such a great faculty has become a problem for a lot of people. Because the only thing, the only and only thing, that they are suffering is life is not happening the way I think it should happen. Is there any other suffering? Is there any other suffering for a human being? It's not happening the way I think it should happen, that's all there is isn't it? Nobody has to tell you, be in the moment, because you cannot be anywhere else. Yes? You just cannot be anywhere else. Can you be? If you live, you live in this moment. If you die, you die in this moment isn't it so? So there is no danger that you may slip away from this moment. That I have to teach you, please be in this moment, don't go away. There is no way to go. There is no way to go. Try. No, no mentally I'm going. Mentally you're not going anywhere. Mentally you can create images of anything. Your mind is a drawing board on which you can write anything. You're in Pune, you can write Mumbai in your mind. Should I take away this capability from you? Should I take away? This is the most beautiful aspect of being human, isn't it? That we can be here but we can imagine that, that, and that, and even things that we have not seen. Yes or no?

How to deal with challenging times?

Transcript: Challenging times are an opportunity, both for individuals and the nation, to rise above their comfort zones and enhance life. ... challenging time is an opportunity for you to enhance your life and the life of the society around you, and the nation. Because challenging times means life is in a flux. When it's a flux, if you know how to ride life, it'll become a great possibility. Of course, there is a lot of difficulty, there is hardship. But hardship is one thing, suffering is another thing. Hardship is a situation in which we exist. Suffering is the psychological situation that we create. Hardship strengthens us, emboldens us. Hardship makes us strong towards a greater possibility. But suffering is an unfortunate consequence that a whole lot of human beings create because they have no control over their psychological space. When situations in the world are against you, your body, your mind, your emotion and your energies should work for you. For this you need a little bit of engineering yourself. An inner engineering needs to happen. This is the whole science of yoga, how to ensure that you are never the problem in your life. Make this one thing happen in your life, that you are never the problem in your life. There are a thousand problems of survival, of wanting to flourish in the world, of people, of enemies, of nations, of social situations. Many, many problems. But you should never be a problem in this world. You must always be a part of the solution.

How to deal with mental health issues? | Sadhguru in Conversation with Karan Johar | #6

Synopsis: What I believe surrounds us all is urban angst. ... that are told to them. I really want to know, it’s such an order of the day today, I feel like it’s talked about like it’s a fashionable issue. But I think it’s a very serious issue when people talk about mental health issues like depression and anxiety and seek counselling to sort those issues out. And then the diagnosis at times is chemical imbalance and medication is given. I know you hate the word philosophy, but all your teachings are definitely about finding yourself and seeking that pleasantness from within. But to those who are not strong enough to achieve that and seek this assistance, what is your take on that?

Looking at life from a different prism | Sadhguru in Conversation with Deepak Chopra | #1

Synopsis: They say, look you have to look at the world through a different prism. You have to change your whole prism through which you view your own life, is a broad theme. The second broad theme is that if you were able to do that, you will have unmeasurable benefits for the body. Dr. Chopra is an expert in talking about the body, and Sadhguru, as well for the mind because how...

... you experience life is who you are. And then that creates a ripple effect because it makes you good people and then you can create a good planet. So that’s theme number two. And then theme number three is, to do that, you have to do a whole lot of things. This is not just something that happens easily. You have to go through a lot of rigorous discipline and you need science and technology to get there essentially. And that science and technology comes from yoga, different forms of yoga, different forms of inner engineering and self-inquiry, self-knowledge, self-discipline. So there’s many, many things. So these are the broad themes. Has your own thinking changed? You both have been talking about variations of this topic for a very long time. Could you just tell us, has that changed a lot?

Only with this quality you can live a full life

Transcript: Equanimity or lack of equanimity is not a question of what we're doing. It's about how we are. How much control do we have on our own thought process, our emotion, our chemistry, our energies. To what extent is this human mechanism in your hands? It's like this. See let's say you don't know how to ride a bicycle. You just sat on a bicycle which was on a stand and you were just pedalling for fun. But...

... it came off the stand and started going. Anxiety or no? It started going fast. Fear or no? It started going very fast. Terror or no? Yes. But if you know how to ride the bicycle, the faster it goes. Fun, isn't it? The same thing with this. All my life, I risk my life for nothing. Not for the country. Simply, for the fun of it. Everyday I risk my life for something because otherwise, I can't live without danger. This is my problem. I have to do something where I'm on the edge. So, a whole lot of people are doing adventure sports. Why? Because the more you take it to the edge, there is more fun in it. Question is, are you equanimous to enjoy it? Or are you going to freak? So once you have taken upto a soldier's profession, I think we should equip them to have an equanimity where they don't suffer this on a daily basis. After all they're human beings, there will be issues within them. But bringing equanimity to the minds of our soldiers and officers is very, very important. India being so steeped in this knowledge of how to maintain your interiority. I'm repeatedly going back to this, it is in the war field that the greatest teachings happen in this country because it was needed most there.

The significance of geometric perfection – the impact of building design

Transcript: In the physical world, the most important aspect is geometric perfection. So geometry is very important. In the yogic sciences, the entire yogice sciences on the physical level, is just about aligning your geometry, your individual geometry to the cosmic geomtry so that, at some point, there is no difference between you and the cosmos. A machine, let's say an engine, let's say a car engine. If we say...

... it is well engineered, essentially we are saying it's geometrically perfect. Yes or on? It is geometrically so perfect, there is least amount of friction. The same goes for this. If it is geometrically perfect, there is least amount of friction. If there is least amount of friction, there is very little wear and tear in terms of life. So architecture is dwellings and usable buildings that we build. In some way, in some way they must find their place with the rest of the creation. I think we've lost this completely simply because we answer liberty with material. Once steel and concrete came, we thought we can build like this, we can build like this, we can build like this. Whichever way we want because of the strength of the material. Doing things with just sheer force, is all right sometimes for agility. But if you do everything like that, your life will become ugly. Not only the building, your life will become ugly because you're doing things with force. Life is beautiful when we can do things with minimum force and maximum impact. Yes or no? Anything that we do, we do it with minimum force but with maximum impact, then life feels aesthetic and beautiful. If you exert maximum force and minimum impact, that's a crude way to live. So our architecture has taken to this mode simply because we found material, where the strength of the material is such we can do absurd shapes and still make them stand. Something which has no right to stand up geometrically is standing up simply because of the strength of the material. If we withdraw from that excitement of finding new material, to more sensible geometry in the world, well, you will see world will feel much better. People will be much healthier, physically and mentally if they live in such buildings. There'll be many other benefits. Above all, you will cause minimum disturbance to everything around you.

What is Success and how to be successful?

Transcript: If your idea of success is you're doing little better than your neighbour, I call that sickness. That is not success. You are happy that your neighbour is worse than you. Is this sickness or success? It is sickness. But, in some way you feel fulfilled with what you're doing. Let's consider that as success for now. It doesn't matter whether you're better than somebody or worse than somebody. That question...

... should not even come up in your mind. But in some way you feel you're using yourself fully and there's a certain sense of fulfillment in your activity. It doesn't matter whether somebody thinks you're worthwhile or not, you feel you're a worthwhile life. Good enough for now. World may not recognize, it doesn't matter. But you know you're worthwhile. So what does success look like? What does it take? You must understand, those who made any significant achievements in their life, who've been very successful either in music, sport, art, business, spiritual process, doesn't matter what. Those people never know when they ate, when they slept, when they got afternoon rest. I have not seen such a thing in my life. So, those who are committed to being successful with whatever they are doing, one important aspect of their life is, they're not settling down wherever it's a bit comfortable. This is happening. In your school, maybe later in your university, later in your work, it's happening to people. Maybe not everyone but a whole lot of people. Their commitment to success is weak. They want to succeed, they will take three steps, then something little interesting happens here, they will go away here, they'll go away there, they'll go with it. Hey, I want to live. Their commitment to success is weak. Either situations around them in some way, you know situations can impede you from doing what you're doing very easily. Many times it happens to everyone. But when this happens people weaken their commitment for their success. Maybe physically they'll feel little weak, they will weaken their commitment to success. Maybe their emotions slosh around a little bit, they will weaken their commitment to success. So our commitment to success should not weaken because there is social drama going on, or physiological drama, or psychological drama. Whatever happens your commitment to success should not weaken. That is what gets you across so many lines in our life, so many barriers in our life.

Transcript: If your idea of success is you're doing little better than your neighbour, I call that sickness. That...

... is not success. You are happy that your neighbour is worse than you. Is this sickness or success? It is sickness. But, in some way you feel fulfilled with what you're doing. Let's consider that as success for now. It doesn't matter whether you're better than somebody or worse than somebody. That question should not even come up in your mind. Should I trust my intuition or logic?

Transcript: In the yogic way of looking at things, there is no such thing as body and mind. There is physical body, there is mental body, there is energy body. The energy body comprises of 72,000 nadis. When we say a nadi, it means a channel or a pathway. Nadi does not mean a nerve. If you cut open this body, you will not see the nadis. There is no such thing physically. But experientially if you observe the nature...

... of the movement of energy in the system, you will see that it always moves along established pathways, never randomly. So there are 72,000 ways in which it moves. 36 on the right, 36 on the left. 36,000 on either side. The right is called as pingala, the left is referred to as eda. These are also referred to as sun and moon. So these two, eda and pingala or the sun and the moon, the right and the left. On the level of your mind signify the logical and the intuitive. When I say intuitive, intuition is not another dimension of perception. But just another dimension of computing. If you have the same amount of information within you, if you go logically, there may be 10 steps to get to a place. Intuition means you don't take the 10 steps, you just jump to the 10th step. But today modern education systems, 100% are stomping on the intuitive dimension. Only the logical is developed. Anything intuitive is dismissed off as mumbo jumbo. For everything you have to think through. What your grandmothers just knew, today you have to do a billion dollar research to find the same thing. So in the yogic system, the significance of the intuition is as important as the logical. So bringing a balance between eda and pingala is a very important part of living a balanced life. Being able to conduct yourself through complex situations with ease comes only when the intuitive dimension of your mind is sufficiently evolved and developed.

Should I listen to my head or my heart

Transcript: So there's a whole lot of enterprise going on in the world by complicating very simple aspects of life. Really. If you complicate something with incomprehensible words and if you have a lot of words to do it, then you will seem profound because anyway nobody can understand what the hell it is. The thing that you're referring to as your heart, is generally the emotional side of you. So you're separating...

... what is thought and what is emotion. Let me ask you a simple question. If you look at yourself carefully in your day-to-day activity, you will notice this. The way you think is the way you emote. Right now, if I think you are such a wonderful person, I will have sweet emotions towards yo. Which I hope you're thinking. This is not a confession. If I think she's horrible, I'll have nasty emotions towards you. Right. I cannot think you're wonderful and have nasty emotions towards you. I cannot think you're horrible and have sweet emotions towards you. It is impractical and it's not possible. People act those things and it never works. People. I hate her but I'll be nice to her. They will go like this and do like this. Have you seen this happening? Nice things are done in a horrible way. It is happening in families, among friends, whatever. Nice things are done in such a horrible way. If you want to do something horrible, just do something horrible at least. Don't spoil the nice things in a horrible way. So now the question is just this, thought and emotion - are they same or are they two different realms? They're not. Thought is agile. See today I can think. Right now I think you're wonderful. Just next moment you did something I don't like, I think you're horrible. My thought immediately changes because it's agile. But my emotion is happy. It'll take three days, it'll struggle and slowly turn around. It has a larger turning arc but after three days it'll come my way. For some people it's three days, some people three months but they will turn around, isn't it? Yes or no? The way you think is the way you feel, there is no other way. It is also true, the way you feel is the way you think also. It depends which is more dominant in you. In a person if emotion is forefront, the way they feel is the way they think. If thought is forefront, the way they think is the way they feel. You can't think one way and feel another way. That only happens temporarily for some time but emotion will catch up.

Right now, let's say somebody is doing some black magic to me. But I am not receptive to it. You are sitting here, you may get it. It is not necessary it must be aimed at you. If you're susceptible at a certain moment, you will get it. So many, many times people may go through bad patches and things like that. Won't describe this, I don't want to create fear in your mind. But many times we have seen people being influenced by certain things not knowing what's happening, blaming all kinds of things. Not knowing what exactly is happening with themselves. Wearing a simple mala gives a certain level of protection for that person.

Simple process to cleanse your Aura and access Akashik intelligence

Transcript: Fire accounts for 4% of your elemental makeup. If you wish to use fire, you can light a fire with an organic substance like straw, or fire root without any oil and stand facing the fire with your hands open and keep your eyes open for three minutes. Then stand with your back to it, exposing your spine for three minutes. This will cleanse your aura and bring about a new sense of resurgence in the system....

... This is to rekindle and reconnect the fire within, with the fires outside. This is the basis of all fire based rituals in the east. If having a fire is not very practical for you, at least a lamp with vegetable oil or ghee. You light a lamp and be around this lamp. First face the lamp and sit and then turn around and sit. So that the fire element within you gets rekindled. The fifth and the most expansive dimension of the elemental composition is akash, or etheric space. This has a certain intelligence. The nature, quality and the power of your life essentially is determined by how much excess can you find into the akashic intelligence. As I said, this is an expansive part of the elemental composition. That means there is no limit. There is only that much water, there is only that much air, that much earth, and that much fire. But the akashic dimension is a limitless possibility. If you find excess in a limitless manner, both your perception and intelligence can grow. One simple process you can do to find more access to akash, or the akashic intelligence is, after sunrise, before the sun crosses a 30 degree angle, look up at the sky once and bow down to akash for holding you and this planet in place. After the sun crosses 30 degrees, sometime during the day, any time, look up and bow down again. After the sunset, within the 40 minutes after sunset, look up at the sky and once again bow down. You are not bowing to any imaginary gods up there, just to the etheric space around us which is holding everything that we are in place. If you get the akash to cooperate with your life energies, life will happen in magical ways. An intelligence that you have never thought possible, will become yours.

A simple exercise to enhance intelligence and bring clarity

Transcript: If clarity has to come, the most important thing is, your spine should be in a certain condition because your perception is largely handled there. The spine is not just a physical substance, it is a communication network. A serious communication network. If you lose it, or if it becomes insensitive, you don't know what you're losing. You're just losing something phenomenal. So it's not just a physical...

... substance. It is the basis of communication that's happening in the system, isn't it? The spinal cord is, I mean the spine is not just one single piece, it's many complex assembly. Every day, needs to stretch. If it telescopes into one into another, then the communication capability in the spine is hugely lost. A natural upsurge of energy will happen if you just keep your feet together and sit down in a squat. So the squat is best. If you can put your feet together and squat, which most of you cannot do. Right now very few people can do. We don't want too much energy to happen so the next best chance is to keep your feet in line with your shoulders, just the same width as your shoulders. You can do up to 21. 21 is a good number to do. If you cannot do that, start with seven. Slowly, every two days, one extra if you do, in about 40 days you will be at 21, which is a good number to do. You will see it will make a phenomenal difference in the way you function. If there is some way to gauge your intelligence, the sharpness of your intellect, you will see you can see a difference happening just because you're doing a simple few things to relax and activate the spine.

The four type of acts, four types of actions that you're performing right now, as you sit here. Your body is doing something, physical action. Your mind is doing something, mental action. Since today morning, since the time you woke up, I will excuse you for the times when you were sleeping. From the time you woke up till this moment, how much of this, what percentage of these four actions are you conscious of? That's a question. How much percentage do you believe you're conscious of from morning to now, these four types of actions? Well below 1%, isn't it? So 99+ of your karma, your action is unconscious. Suppose, unconsciously I am taking something and throwing like this, all over. And this keeps coming and falling on my head. I think it's being dropped from heaven because I'm unconscious that I am throwing all these things. When 99% of your actions, or over 99% of your actions, are unconscious, you always think something is being done to you, isn't it? Why forever people have been talking about being conscious is just this. If you raise it to 2%, suddenly it looks like your destiny is in your hands. If you have mastery over your physical body, 15 - 20% of your life and destiny will be in your hands. If you have mastery over your mind, 50 - 60% of your life and destiny is in your hands. If you have mastery over your life energies, 100% of life and destiny is in your hands.

Can wearing Gemstones change my life

Transcript: Do other things have influence on us, particularly inanimate objects? The gems and the diamonds and things like that, and also the planets. ... which is millions and millions of tons of water is able to rise, when 72% of your body is water, you think it won't rise at all? It does. So I don't know if you're conscious of it, but in India most people are, not only in India, anywhere wherever there are mental asylums and things, they are conscious of it. On full moon days and new moon days people get exaggerated levels of disturbance in their minds. So people think new moon and full moon will cause madness. No, that's not the truth. If you're very loving, full moon day you will become more loving. If you're very joyful, on a full moon day you will become more joyful. If you're a little crazy, you'll get little more crazy. Whatever is your quality, gets little hyped on that day. So those who are romantic, they want full moon day. Those who want to meditate, they want full moon day. Those who are a little mad, they don't want full moon day. Essentially, it's hyping things up a little bit. Of course, today there is another kind of textbook science which is going on, which doesn't absorb anything except what happens in the laboratory. These people are going on saying, this is all rubbish, this, that. Now if you pay attention to your own body, you will know, without looking up, without looking at the calendar, you will know when is full moon day, when is new moon day by yourself. Simply if you pay sufficient attention to your own system because it's visible in your system, certain behavior is there. But with the human being the problem is, or people seeing it a problem, any possibility, if you do not explore that possibility, in your eyes it looks like a problem. What is a problem is always a possibility, isn't it? You don't like it? What is a possibility, if you do not explore it, if you do not realize what is the possibility, it seems like a problem to you. So do inanimate things have impact on you? Yes, if you allow it. Because this is the human predicament that, who you are is not determined by nature, it is left open for you. Left open for you means you are the only creature on this planet who's been given the freedom to shape your own life.

... Power in the engine is one thing, power at the wheels is another thing. Completely different. Today the top racing machines in the world are just 2.7 liter, that's a captive set for the formula ones. But they're the fastest machines because power of the engine and power of the wheel, the loss very, very minimal. Well, we have pickup trucks here, which generate 700 bhp at the engine. But, what goes to the wheel is another matter. So there is something called as transmission. So what you generate in your stomach, where all does it go to, what extent does it go, is a very important aspect which in today's world people are simply not conscious of. If you want to facilitate this, well there are yogic practices. But even to assist that, this neem and turmeric can be a tremendous process. Because it facilitates that, that your transmission of energy is evenly across. And once you start noticing this, then by choice you can move your energies where you want. When I say you can move your energies where you want, right now, if I say this, people will start imagining all kinds of things. So let me limit that, but anyway. Right now, I want to speak. If I have my energies focused in my throat consciously, it may happen to a whole lot of singers and others just, you know, by natural inclinations. But if you're consciously there, you will see your speech will have a different kind of impact. If you look at something, if you move your energies to your eyes, not that everything, the dominance is in that place, then you will see your look has a power which, everybody has eyes maybe they're 20/20. So you may your vision may be normal, but doesn't have the same power, will not grasp the same things, will not penetrate the same way. Like this, there are various aspects. You want to do something with your hands, if you can have your energies focused in your hands, your touch will be another level of touch altogether. So if this has to happen, first and foremost thing is the transmission of energy in the system is smoked. Neem and turmeric as a combination on an empty stomach does wonders in this direction. Wonders.

How to build goodwill among people

Transcript: So how to build goodwill. I was doing a program for one of the top, you know, really one of the largest multinational company in the world. Top 25 executives. It's a two-day event. I had nine volunteers with me, Isha foundation is a completely volunteer-run organization. And these nine volunteers were managing everything for the program, and on the second day one of these executives asked me, Sadhguru,...

... where do you get such people? Because they are always looking for attrition, you know. Where do you get such people? I said, you don't get them, you got to make them. How do you make them? I said, you have to make them fall in love with you. Oh, how do we do that? I said, first you must fall in love with them. Then they say, oh they don't pay us for that. So that's all it is. So you cannot build goodwill, you have to extrude goodwill. If you offer it to everybody, then it comes back to you in many ways. But you don't worry whether it comes back to you or not, this should be your way of living. This should be a way of being, that you naturally include everybody in everything that you are. Some will respond, some will not respond and it's fine, it's their choice. But, as far as you're concerned, there's no choice. You have fallen in love with everybody. For them, they can choose still. But after some time they'll lose their choice, they'll have no choice. If you continue to be like this, you will see after some time they have no choice at all. Initially they act like they have a choice, but after a while they'll have no choice. So don't try to build goodwill. See, when I say fall in love with something, all I'm saying is, what you refer to as love is just a certain pleasantness of your emotion. Emotion is a very powerful thing, though people talk all intellectual nonsense still world is driven by human emotion. Yes? Isn't it so? Who gets elected is still driven by emotion, isn't it? Who is popular in the country or in the world is still driven by emotion, isn't it? People that you have never set your eyes upon, they're the people you're in love with. Please see. Yes? You see an Amitabh Bachchan or a Tendulkar or a Brad Pitt or somebody or maybe Angelina Jolie, I'm sorry. You are in love with people that you have never seen because that is the nature of your emotion. So emotion is a powerful tool. So if you can manage a steady sweetness of your emotion, you're in love with everything around you. If you're like this, people can't help it. They'll fall. This is not a trick, this is a way of being. This is an intelligent way to exist because whether they fall in love with you or not, your life is very pleasant and sweet.

How much time do we really have? | Sadhguru in Conversation with Matthew Hayden | #10

Synopsis: Sadhguru, my question is about boundlessness. Earlier today you mentioned that there is something within us that is seeking to express in different ways and it comes as different forms. Every morning when I get up, there are always two voices at least, and while I know that, I’m sorry. One of the things that you said is, ultimately you’ll have to come to yoga because...

... you’ve tried everything. Every morning when I get up, I find that there’s these two voices that say you have time, and sometimes it says you don’t have time. So, Sadhguru, I think my question to you after knowing you for a bit, and also you’ve been talking about life continuing in death. The question, I suppose is, how much time do we really have? And, of course, why isn’t it there in my experience? Because every morning when I get up, I’m like ya, I’ve got time and I can get to yoga one day or the other. And still be able to make it. But, the reality seems to be that, you know, there is not much time.

Also, I think since I’m a humanities student, people around me constantly compare me with my other friends who have taken up medicine or engineering. And that really puts me off. How to be successful like Sachin Tendulkar?

Transcript: See, whether it is art, music, design, business, sport, spirituality, politics, it doesn't matter what it is. If you are not absolutely devoted to what you're doing, you will never do anything significant in your life. That's for 100% I'm telling you. You may earn a living, but you will not do anything significant if you are not totally, totally devoted to something. See, right now there are many examples....

... Because they gave him a Bharat Ratna, I am choosing him. Let's say Sachin Tendulkar. This man knows nothing except hitting a ball. He gets so devoted to hitting a ball, hitting a ball, hitting a ball, hitting a ball and he eats it like nobody. Now he's Bharat Ratna. Yes or no? It is just devotion. You must talk to him and see privately. He is like, you talk about the ball he will. He is so devoted to it, okay? It's, it's his religion, it's his sacred stuff, it is everything to him, hitting that ball. His entire life he invests in one simple act, hitting a ball. Is it a big thing? But hitting a ball because of enormous devotion, just see what happens. Tremendous things happen, isn't it? So, the question is not about what you want to do, the question is just this, can you be devoted to this? Let's say you think in terms of today, if I invest my life next 25 years, can I be devoted to what I'm doing right now? Will this matter to me? Will I feel fulfilled if I look back and see what I have done? Something. You do whatever the hell you want, just do it well. That's important. And don't do any damn thing that you will be ashamed of doing tomorrow, isn't it? What other people say it doesn't matter but you should not be ashamed of what you have done, isn't it so? Hello? This much you must keep, this much pride and freedom you must keep in your life. It doesn't matter the whole world says you're wrong, but you are not ashamed of what you have done. That much you must always keep in your life, if that one thing if you give up I'm telling you, you'll live a very poor life. You may have everything but you'll have nothing.

How to sense the energy in your house? How to energize your house?

Transcript: So the punya puja is to enliven the house. The space in the house should become alive. If you have lived in such a way in your home, that every moment your own, with love and light within you, then no punya puja would be needed. But today you have built homes which are so large. It's very difficult to make them alive, just by living. If you just had a one-room house and you lived in great sense of...

... love and joy, you can easily keep it very alive. But today your house has 10-15 enclosures. It's very difficult for any human being to keep it alive. Once in a way if you do do not enliven it, slowly if you enter certain parts of your home, you will see it feels like a coffin. I want all of you, today, you know your house well enough where you need to open your eyes you open. But just walk with your eyes closed, with your left hand outstretched a little bit, and just walk just feel and walk around the house. You will see many parts of your house will feel like a coffin. Some parts may be alive. Usually, I find kitchens are alive. Because it's the only place something is happening. Everywhere else. If you live in a very, very alive way, you can enliven something. But when you have 12, 15, 20 enclosures in your house, it's very, very difficult for anybody to enliven all that. So punya puja, once in a way, at least once a year, would light it up. That is, you have the space around you alive and it supports you. Can't I live beautifully in a coffin? You can. If you're capable of it, no problem. But not everybody is, they need external support. This is the idea of creating consecrated spaces. So punya puja is a way of consecrating your home, entire home, every part of it so that there is some sense of aliveness and energy. But we cannot consecrate your home in such a way it's forever. Because your house is not built through that geometry. It doesn't have that kind of material to hold the energy forever. If we enliven an Indian home, easily, one or two years it will stay alive. An American home, particularly, largely with wood and inside all those dampening, what's this insulating material, keeping it alive. I'm saying if nothing alive is happening in the house, you're a depressed person suppose, you have a whole bunch of depressed people in the house nobody is really alive, if it is so, this punya puja may deplete in a matter of six to eight months. It will not stay for very long because the material used does not support that. If the house was built with brick or stone, we could make it alive and easily make it stay that way at least for two years, minimum two years. I would say one and a half to two years, it would last much more. But it also depends on you, how you are. However the material is, if you are fine, you can live well.

Is it ‘bad’ to have a superiority complex?

Transcript: So Sadhguru, you are so reverent and you are so cherished. Do you ever get a superiority complex? Right now, yes. See, the question is not about superiority complex, inferiority complex, poverty complex, or wealthy complex. That you have a complex is a serious problem, isn't it? Whatever kind it is. ... In such a way, you make a bloody fool of yourself wherever you go. Do I look like that? Hello? Do I look like I'm making a bloody fool of myself with you? No. So, no complex of any kind. But then our confidence fluctuates everyday. So what do you have to say about that? Because I don't have any confidence about anything. I just have clarity. People think I have knowledge, no my head is empty. That's why to make it look little substantial, I have a turban. It's totally empty always. But I have clarity. Clarity means what? You see things the way they are. Knowledge means what? You have fixed information about everything. If things have changed, you will not see it the way it is. That's as good as being blind. See people think owls are blind. It's not true. Their vision is far more sensitive than yours. But because of sunlight they're blinded because it's too much. When light goes down, he sees very clearly. Not because he's blind, because his eyes are super sensitive. So it's important that you bring clarity to your life. Not knowledge, because knowledge is conclusions that you gather. Knowledge is okay when you're trying to do something physical, material, in the world. But not with life. Is it true, what you thought is absolute at the age of 12, today is not true? Yes or no? Are you sure that whatever you think, this is it right now, will be this is it in another three years' time? Of course not. You know that. So you know you're wrong. Yes or no? Yes. So you know, anyway you're wrong. So why assert the wrong things? Well, right now we are wrong, at least that's managed with little more conscience. If you know you're wrong, you will walk carefully, isn't it?

Isn't it? So, once my limitations become very important, there is no way to be conscious. You're just becoming self-defeating in the process, it doesn't matter how hard you try. The only, and only, reason why the entire world is not naturally enlightened is, they're dead serious about their lives. They've not come to ease with their lives, they're too serious about it. See, I mean you've just been through Inner Engineering online process. If you take the very solar system, in this cosmos the solar system is a tiny spec. In that spec, planet Earth is a microspec. In that microspec, Los Angeles is a super microspec. In that, you're a big man. This is a serious problem, not a small problem. So once you create this problem, then you cannot be conscious. You can only be mentally alert, because it is all about survival. The more mentally alert you become, more you tend to become like a carnivorous animal. You know a carnivorous animal is very mentally alert because every day he has to hunt his food. This is the nature of a carnivorous animal. Once, your alertness, mental alertness, goes that way, you become like a predator. Always looking, what you can get, what you can get, what you can get. It may be in whatever levels of life that people are involved in, but all the time they're trying to grab something because mental alertness creates that. I'm not saying you should not be alert. But if you're conscious and alert, then it works in a different way. But if you just ramp up your mental alertness, you will become like a hunter, all the time waiting. Crouching for something.

Is that important for you to perform any activity in life well, that your body and your brains are working well? Hello? Is it important? Tell me, if you're stressed and anxious, does your body and brains work at their best? Our body can get immune to it and that is how, you know, like in the gym when I stress my muscle it grows when it breaks. So, like that we can also get ourselves immune. No, even if you joyfully run, climb a mountain, play a game, still muscle will get well. Hello? So under stress it would get better. It will break and then it will build better together. No, no. See, stress means, you're always finding more and more exotic word for this, somebody says stress, somebody says tension, somebody says anxiety, and it goes further. Alright? There are many, many names. There are some 72, 74 different kinds of mental ailments today that they've identified. Lots of exotic names. Essentially, it's just this. Your intelligence has turned against you. Once your intelligence has turned against you, no power in the universe can save you. That's all. If your intelligence was working for you, would you keep this blissful or stressful? Please tell me. Make your choice, I'm going to bless you right now. If your intelligence was functioning for you, what is your choice for yourself? Blissfulness or stressfulness? Blissful. What you want for your neighbour may be debatable. You know, we're neighbours elsewhere.

How to develop the right personality?

Transcript: You must understand what a personality is. The word personality comes from the word persona. Persona means, in Greek, or in Latin, I'm sorry. It is a mask. This is a mask that they used to use in old theaters. Now, the same people will be playing many roles. Let's say Ramayan is happening. You have to play Rama's role also, and Sita's role also, and Lakshman's role also. For everything there's one,...

... one mask. You hold this mask and speak like Rama. Keep it down. Hold this mask and speak like Sita. Keep it down. Hold this and speak like Hanuman and keep it down. This is how the plays were done. So it is those masks which were referred to as persona. So personality means, you held a mask, and mask got stuck to your face. You couldn't pull it out. That means you have a personality. Personality is something that people are trying to develop because they have no sense of being. Instead of the real thing, you're trying to concretize a fake thing. If you are in touch with your being, why do you want a personality? It's not necessary. You can be a different kind of personality in different places. You are, actually. Already. Or are you stuck with one personality? Some people are. People who are simplistic in their head have only one personality. Others have different personalities in different areas of life, isn't it? So personality is something that you have taken on. But, you have become so unconscious about it, that you think it's for real. You're asking how to develop, that means you're making it up, right? Another word for developing is making up, isn't it? You're making it up. Make it up whichever way is suitable for your kind of activity. But you must be able to keep it down. If it gets stuck to your face, then it becomes misery. Then all suffering will come to you. You can take on any kind of personality but, when you want to keep it down, you must be able to keep it down.

How to set goals in life?

Transcript: Your dreams, goals, and desire, aspirations. It's good that you spend little more time on it and see, will this really mean something to you even after 25 years, 50 years. If you're in your deathbed, will it still mean something to you? You must look at it. Whatever you're aspiring for, whatever you're dreaming of, whatever goals you have set, will it really mean something? Because most of these goals...

... are traps. They're just traps. You get in, it's only one way street, you can't turn back. I want you to look at this. Because, many of them are older than you, you ask them, what they dreamed of at 18. They are fortunate it didn't come true. Yes or no? If everything that you desired and dreamed came true in your life, could you live with it? Fortunately, many of those things got filtered and never came true, isn't it? So, it will be very good if, anybody of your age, if they want to decide and fix the goals of their life, it'll be very good if they take a break from all influence that's around them. Social influences, family influences, other influences. Withdraw somewhere, that's why an ashram. Withdraw somewhere, sit down, meditate, bring yourself to a certain level of clarity and joy. When you're very happy and clear, you must decide. Not in desperation you said goals. Desperate goals that you said will mean a lot to you at that moment, tomorrow morning you look, you don't know why you're tangled up with it. So, it'll be good if you're fixing your life, it's best that you do it when you're very, very peaceful, happy, and clear-headed. Isn't it? Not influenced by anything around you. Simply by yourself, sit and decide what is it that you really want to become in your life. What is it that will be of enduring value for you, not for somebody else, for you. And, you don't have to build a personality for that, you strive for that. The necessary persona will come.

So Bruce Lee made him stand here, he was at a swimming pool. The swimming pool was nine feet away. He was standing here, the swimming pool edge is nine feet away. He said, "You just stand here," and he kept his fist just three inches away from the journalist's body and hoo! The man went and fell in the pool. A 185 pound man went and fell in the pool with a three inch punch. Just that's all. No like this, just. That's all. Because you're using the Manipuraka, hoo! The man will just fly. Manipuraka could be mobile but that's not a good thing to do. Some of the people, who are into certain type of martial arts, are making their Manipuraka mobile to demonstrate certain things. That is not good at all. Once you learn to move your Manipuraka in a certain way, that too to do demos and stuff, such a person will not live long. So I'm not saying this only with this relation, because anyway he's dead, that's easy to say. Not in that context. Innocently they have shown these things in some of the things. There are yogis who move their Manipuraka and do things. Such people never physically move. They sit in the same place. Once your maintenance center is moved around, you don't move your physical body, you sit in the same place always. I think in some of these martial arts movies, innocently, not knowing what it is, they have shown this. Some old people are sitting, somebody falls down but they're always sitting. Have you seen this?

Competition is good

Transcript: Namaskaram Sadhguru. So, I'm saying that the idea of competition is so much ingrained in our minds. Not even at the school level, but even at the postgraduate level. Or any aspect of our lives, that it creates a lot of unnecessary stress, so what can be really done about this? Competition is a good thing. If you're incompetent and you're in competition, you will feel stressed. If you want to be in...

... a competitive situation, the thing is you have to work on your competence. Right now the problem is, you're tweaking your desire, you're not tweaking your comptenece. This is what has to happen, that we must teach children to tweak their competence, not their desire. We're calling this ambition, we're calling this goal-orientedness. Ambition means what, you tweaked up your desire. You'll suffer invariably. If you tweaked up your competence, you will see, wherever you go you're doing better than what people expect you to do. So naturally, things will go well for you. Competition is not the bad thing. Lack of competence is the bad thing. We must understand this. In this country, this is very important because we still think our education is cooked in heaven. Because people tell me temples are crowded just before the examination. Just the wrong place to be. Just the wrong place to be. When your examination is coming, you sitting in the temple is just the wrong place to be. In the vacation you sat in the temple, great. So instead of competence, we have big desires. If you focus enough on enhancing your competence, you will see there is such joy in breaking limitations everyday and becoming something better. You don't care a damn how somebody else is doing. Yes? If everyday, if you're breaking limitations, if you're breaking the limitations of who you are. If your competence you're working constantly to expand, you don't even have the time to look at somebody. How is he doing. Because this is such a great thing happening within you. So please focus on your competence. Competition you don't bother. If you're good, you'll be on the top. Otherwise, you'll be somewhere. It's okay.

How to overcome fear of suffering? The first step to become successful

If you're well-managed within yourself, you know how to manage your thought. You know how to manage your emotion. You know how to manage your body, your chemistry, your energy. If you know how to manage all this, what does it matter if you walk into hell, I'm asking. If you're well-managed, if you are a heaven within you, what does it matter where you go? Hell also will be an interesting place to go. But, if you're ill-managed, then you want to be in a nice place all the time. You will not step out into anything. I'm not saying this is wrong. This is against nature, because in nature every life is aspiring to be as much as it can be, isn't it? Every life is naturally aspiring. This is not a philosophy, this is not an ideology that you must do this or that. It is natural and intrinsic for every life that it will do as much as it can. From an earthworm, from a worm, to an insect, to a bird, to an animal, to a tree. Every one of them is trying to be full-fledged life. If you go against this simply because of the fear of suffering, then all possibilities of exploring the nature of being human, the tremendous immensity of being human is just lost upon humanity. Today, you will see this everywhere, when people say, "I am only human," they are talking about the limitations of being human. They're not talking about the possibilities of being human, isn't it? When, if we are the most intelligent species on the planet, if we are the most capable species on the planet, should we be talking about our possibilities, or should we be talking about our limitations? Whenever anybody writes or says, "Oh we are human," they are always referring to their limitations, never to the possibilities of being human. This is because the most fundamental things have not been taught in our education systems. How to handle your thought and your emotion. The reason why people have not even learnt to manage their thought and emotion, by the time you're 10 you should have learnt it. At 60, people still don't know how to manage their thought and emotion. They're standing up like ghosts in their life. They don't need anybody's help. They can go on endlessly creating suffering for themselves.

Emotional security is a must for societies to flourish

Emotional security is an extremely important aspect for any human being and any society to flourish. For most people, emotion is a very dominant dimension of who they are. Such being the case, nobody can be truly productive if the emotions are all freaked out. The communities that do best are where there is emotional security for children and they don't have to fight for everything from an early age.  Unfortunately, in the name of freedom, we are making children go though emotional upheaval at a young age. It is very important that a culture of commitment is brought back in the society where are committed to their children and children are committed to their parents.

What differentiates a leader from a manager?

A leader must be able to inspire people.  If people need constant supervision, that's not leadership. Leadership is about being able to take your people in a direction and to a destination that they themselves could not have imagined possible. If it was something that they could have imagined, they do not need a leader around. For this to happen, a leader must be able to see beyond the obvious which others can't see. To become a true leader, one must have a profound sense of insight and need to work upon themselves to enhance their perception skills.

How to control the mind?

This mental diarrhea of uncontrolled thought process cannot be addressed by such crazy ideas and philosophies as 'sit with closed eyes and try not to think of anything'. Just  try for yourself - the harder you try to control your mind, the more active your mind becomes. Sadhguru tells how human 'mind' - instead of becoming a cherished faculty has become a source of misery for most simply because there is no effort to understand its true nature.
