Why are more youngsters taking to intoxication?

Transcript: Namaskaram Sadhguru. I'd like to know the truth about the increase in alcohol usage and addiction in my generation, younger generation. Very young kids, kids in school are starting to use substances, and as a safe haven, as an escape for them. And that feels very scary and dangerous. I want to know why you think kids are using this and I want to know what you think is the best way, most organic way...

... to get people out of it. Namaskaram Nag. I like your name. Cobras have always been very dear to me. And, if you do not know this, cobra venom also is an intoxicant if it's used in a certain way. Why the need for intoxication is going up in the society. There are many reasons. One basic thing is, people are no more fighting for survival. A large segment of society has moved out of survival. When people move out of survival, they must find other areas of interest and passionate involvement. If that doesn't happen, the need for pleasure and the need for intoxication will naturally go up in that given society. This is why it's very important that even if the parents are affluent, the children should not know affluence till they come to a certain age. In this culture, even the kings send their children to gurukula, where they studied with other children. Where everybody lived with very basic needs. Because the necessary sense of discipline and involvement and engagement with life has to happen before wealth comes into somebody's life. Otherwise, wealth will become a burden that you carry on your head. And this is what is happening to this generation. And one more reason is, because these days both the parents are working largely, at an early age the needed attention, that the child needs, is not happening to the child. So naturally various deviances are taken to. And, there is not enough physical activity. When you don't enjoy the fitness of your body, then the only other thing that you will enjoy is intoxication. If you do not enjoy the vibrance and vitality of your system, then intoxication becomes the only way. And, now drugs are not only intoxication, they'll also make them feel vibrant for a few hours. So, massively the generation is moving in that way. And one more significant reason why this generation is moving towards these drugs is, in their minds the heavens that were promised are collapsing. Maybe still they're not able to articulate it very clearly. They don't have the clarity or the courage to say it. But, for a long time we have managed people, saying that if you abstain from all these things, in heaven all of this will be available in huge quantities. Now heavens are collapsing so they're trying to drink it up right here. So like this there are many aspects. Fundamentally, there is no need for an individual human being to physically strive for his survival. That itself makes the need for intoxication more.

Should Marijuana be legal?

Transcript: Is it true that this human mechanism is the most sophisticated chemical factory on the planet? So if you know how to manage this well, you can produce what you want in this. Anyway, there was an Israeli scientist. He was doing research on cannabis, and its impact on the neurological system. In about 4.5 years, he came up with this. He said, there are millions of cannabis receptors in our brain. But...

... why? So he threw this information to all kinds of scientific disciplines to find out, why in human brain there are millions of cannabis receptors. Many funny things happened around the world in this context. Then the neurologists came up with this and said that the brain is expecting that you will produce cannabis within the system. It's not expecting you to smoke. It's expecting you produce that so that it becomes a mood equalizer for you all the time. But most human beings have become inefficient chemical factories or they're just lousy CEOs managing a great factory. So, they start smoking from outside. It's not a moral issue for me. But the thing is, there is substantial study which are being put down by those activists who want to promote it. There is substantial study to show that your decision making, certain dimensions of your brain, particularly about decision making are sufficiently suppressed. If you smoke Marijuana for 30 days, this will last for 4-5 years. Your decision making is clearly affected. With that kind of mind, with that kind of a brain, if you enter the court and I'm putting my life in your hands. I don't want a cannabis smoking lawyer for me. I don't want a cannbis smoking surgeon to work up on me. If he's just smoking on the street corner, not doing anything to anybody, it's his problem. But definitely I don't want my surgeon to be on Marijuana and do surgery on me. Yes or no? Do you want? Nor do I want other drivers. Because I drive at a certain speed, I don't want other drivers who are smoked out, driving with me. I don't want. I told you, it's not a moral issue for me. It's a question of whether it'll enhance your life or suppress your life. Whether it'll allow you to live your life full on, or will it make you a smaller life then the way you are, or what you're capable of.

How to Quit Smoking?

Transcript: Swami ji how to come off the addiction? I'm sorry? Addiction like smoking, like drinking, something like that. No, because we know that's bad thing but we are addicted to that. I don't know, because I do go for tennis, I go for. I'm sorry? I go for sports also but sometimes we smoke regularly in three hours once, or two hours once, or something like that. ... out of that. I didn't say it's a bad thing. I don't think it's good or bad. It's just quite stupid to be smoking. It's not good or bad, it's just stupid because this machine was not made to smoke. This is a eco-friendly machine. But now you're making it a smoking machine. That means it's stupid, isn't it? A well, very efficient machine, you make it inefficient machine, is it not stupid? Is it good or bad? There's no such thing. Ya, we know it's bad, but. See, that's the whole thing. The moment you call it bad, you can't leave it. See, he well knows what's bad. Why are you giving it titles that it is not? It's just stupid, that's all. If you see something as stupid, you can't be doing it everyday. Somewhere, you feel smarter than other people. Yes? No, because it tastes. See, now slowly in the world, people have gotten against you. Just ten years ago, if you blow it into somebody's face. You felt great, they felt stupid. Now the equation has reversed in last ten years time. Isn't it? Isn't it so? So somewhere you thought it's a smart thing to do. When you were just ten year old kid, you wanted to suck in and blow it out into somebody's face. It felt like a smart thing to do. You tell me, smoking. A machine that doesn't smoke, to make it smoke. Right now we're working so hard to make our cars smoke less, isn't it? Enormous amount of research into fuels and engines and everything is going on to make our cars smoke less, isn't it? A non-smoking machine, if you make it smoke, is it stupid or intelligent? Stupid. Say it loudly. Stupid. That's all, if you say that slowly it'll drop off. Now there is a certain chemical factor to this. Your chemistry has become dependent on nicotine or caffeine or whatever. That we will change, you just see. You do Shambhavi Mahamudra, suddenly your whole system is so fired up. The need to smoke, the need to drink coffee, tea, everything just evaporates. Now if you do it, it's only for the pleasure of it. One day you feel like drinking coffee, you drink it. One day you feel like smoking, you smoke. That's upto you. But the compulsion will be taken away. Physiological dependence will be taken away. We'll do that with the practice. But first you see that it's stupid to do it.

Synopsis: As part of Sadhguru's Youth & Truth series of conversation at Universities, a student asks Sadhguru - "My question is, suppose humanity makes it past it's very tumultuous phase we are in right now - what would we do. How to avoid the suede seduction of doing drugs and alcohol – it’s so “cool”

Synopsis: As part of the Youth & Truth series of conversation, a student at the University of Toronto asks Sadhguru, "How do we counterbalance the power of social structures put on by popular culture. It feels like it sometimes holds youth in ignorance and has them carry out a suede perception of self-worth, and can also lead people to destructive behaviors, like drugs and alcohol because its so "cool"....

... It is impossible to escape. What do we do?". This is a must watch talk for all teenagers and young adults. Sadhguru tells that we need not look at it through a moral lens of right and wrong. Instead we should see what is it that will enhance our lives, and what is it that will limit or lower that possibility.

Can Ayahuasca be Used for Spiritual Awakening?

Concoctions with hallucinogenic things, like Ayahuasca, are used to purge parasites from the human body. These are used by tribal societies who are exposed to natural elements, and in whom the number of parasites which reside in the body significantly increase over a period of time. But if you use outside substances for this purpose, you will get addicted to them. If you rise in experience by breaking the mind with chemicals, it is only a temporary access; most of the time it will leave you debilitated.

Is Getting High on Drugs Speed Up My Spiritual Journey?

Can getting high on plant based substances like marijuana help one on their spiritual journey? Consuming these substances gives a high and makes one feel free. Isn't that the purpose of being spiritual - to be free? Then what is the difference? Sadhguru explains that though the chemicals may give one a sense of expansion and freedom, but it is a false sense of expansion. And this false sense of freedom will lead to regular consumption, which will ultimately break the body. It leads to pleasure without any sense of purpose, which leads to suicidal tendencies.

Can Marijuana Further My Spiritual Journey?

If you know how to stimulate yourself from within, you can always be intoxicated, without taking any substance. Shiva is also referred as Soma or Somasundara - which means intoxication. He is always inebriated, but fully alert. Sadhguru narrates an interesting incidence that happened to Adi Shankara - and how he gave a message to his disciples - don't always try to imitate your Guru! It's very important to have clarity in life. And there is intoxication in absolute clarity. Marijuana, and other intoxicants, you are lowering your capability. It is a backward step in human evolution - there is nothing spiritual about it.

Nag Ashwin – Why More Youth Today Are Consuming Alcohol and Drugs?

The survival needs of people are now taken care of - so, naturally people will look elsewhere for involvement. If they don't find anything, they will move towards more pleasure and more intoxication. Another reason is that children are not getting enough attention because both parents are working. Also, this generation does not believe in 'heaven' - so 'morality' which used to work, will not work now. The solution is, to keep children involved in sports and activities that keep them engaged with nature. They must experience the pleasures of the mind, emotion and consciousness - once that happens, then indulging in pleasures of the body will come down. And children should not know affluence till a certain age.

What Is Chitta?

What is referred as information, is nothing but a certain memory. The body and mind have accumulated memory over a period of time. There is a dimension of intelligence within a human being, which is free from memory. Sadhguru says - "Yet, there is a dimension of intelligence within you that is free, unsullied by memory. In yoga, we call this chitta.... This is not yours or mine. This is a cosmic intelligence – the source of creation."
