What is the right place to meditate?

Transcript: How significant is the place or the location where we do meditation? Well, there's a problem in this question. If I say yes, there will be trouble. If I say no, there will be trouble. So it's yes and no. Yes because of course different places are geared in different ways. Some places are created for certain purposes. If you go sit in the Dhyanalinga, you will see that that's engineered for that. But...

... another way of looking at it is, either you can go in search of significant places or you can make any place significant. I feel the second option is good. But, for that, your presence should become significant. Your presence being significant means, it's a simple arrangement. You have three dimensions of yourself right now. It can be further divided but basically you have a physical body, you have a psychological structure of thought and emotion, and you have an energy body. All these three dimensions are pervaded by certain karmic content. Depending upon this karmic content, your body behaves in one way, your mind behaves in another way, your energies behave another way. For the same situations, different people behave differently. All dimensions. Body behaves differently, mind behaves differently, energies behave differently. Now, in a way what we are looking at right from the basic Shambhavi Mudra practice, what we are looking at is to rearrange them in such a way. The first thing is always life energy, the most dominant force in your life is not your body. Because if body is a dominant force, it will do its own little compulsive things and that's all it can do. If mind is the most dominant thing, most of the time you don't know what the hell you're doing. All right? You'll always be thinking of freedom and imitating the society in which you live. That's all that will happen. Yes. Either you will be imitating it or you will be reacting to it. Both ways you're a slave to what is around you because this is what the mind will do. So you have to arrange yourself in such a way, your life or your life energy is the first thing in your life. This is the most dominant thing. Your body and your mind are minor things. If this one thing happens, then space doesn't matter. Wherever you sit, it's fine. Wherever you sit, it's a significant place because your life has become significant. Significance of life when I say, I'm not talking in terms of social terms. How significant you are in this world, that's not the point. As a life you become significant. Only when you become significant as a life, then you'll see it doesn't matter what you do. Whatever you do is still worthwhile.

Which is the best material for yoga mat?

Transcript: Above all, when you're doing yoga, your first relationship of being one is with the earth. To be in touch with the earth is important. A proper yogi means, for Hatha Yoga, if you can afford to do this, you must make a room with packed mud. With packed clay. And on top of it you put either a raw silk cloth or a cotton cloth. A raw, cotton cloth not sanforized. And you do yoga on that for maximum impact...

... because this body, you might have forgotten, but the body knows that it's just a piece of the planet. Always it knows. When you practice yoga, you want that to become a conscious and a living process for you so that you experience yourself as one with the earth on which you're living. So using rubber mats for yoga, I know there are Isha branded rubber mats. I look at it with great pain. But they say Sadhguru, cotton mats get dirty. Who's going to wash them? In America they don't know how to wash them, so we made the rubber mats. But this is, Sadhguru this is some special material which really insulates you. This is what I'm asking you, when I asked you the first question. Are you here to experience life or torch life? Unknowingly you're doing it in so many ways as to how to insulate yourself from life. If you, you might already know this, it's all over the place these days. 90% of your body is bacteria. You know this? That means you're only 10% occupied of this building. This construction you have, only 10% is yours. 90% is microbes. They're constantly in and out. They're not just here. If you isolate this, that itself is sickness. That itself is sickness. If you insulate this from the rest of the world, you will become, the potential of who you are is being lowered continuously. So if you're a homebound person, that means every day you wake up in the same place. Now largely if it is so, it's best you use a cotton mat for your yoga or a raw silk mat, not a plastic thing. That is for people who roll it up and go and do it in central park because they want everybody to see they're doing yoga. If you're doing proper yoga, Hatha Yoga, you must be connected with earth. Organic material so that there's no break.

Is wearing orange necessary for spiritual growth?

Monks and Orange have almost become synonyms - so much so that people think wearing Orange is a pre-requisite for walking the spiritual path.  Well, nothing could be farther from truth. The Sanyasis (monks) in India do not wear Orange per se - they color their clothes with the soil (red earth) - giving it brownish/orange hue.  Keeping the body well is important,  so that it does not become an impediment in one's spiritual journey.  Sanyasis wear clothes that are washed in soil because the best way to make the body stable is to be connected to the Earth. Especially for one who is focused on something beyond the body, he does not want his body to come in the way. So this is like covering oneself  by Earth and  being continuously conscious that this body is part of the Earth and is just a temporary outcrop of the planet.

Sadhguru also guides on the best cloth to use to keep yantra, or picture, and also on how to cover the walls.

Activating The Sun Within, and The Significance of Brahma Muhurtam

Sadhguru tells us that as a young boy, it was some task to wake him up. But once, he started practicing Suryakriya, within a few months, everyday he would come awake around 3.30am on his own. He explains, that as the sun comes up on the horizon, around 3.20am - 4.00am, the sun's energies start reaching us. He says - "As far as we are concerned, in this solar system, the fundamental source of our energy and creation is the sun. The moment the brahma muhurta starts, your body wakes up by itself in a deep way within yourself". He also explains what kriyas are all about.

How Can I Deepen My Practice of Shambhavi?

In context of Shambhavi Mahamudra practice, Sadhguru says - "The practice is set for wellbeing, but your idea of wellbeing still matters. Your idea of wellbeing may just be a little better health and success in what you are doing, and you think that is it. That is why I am saying, “Don’t set a goal – let it evolve.” Let it evolve to a place that you could not imagine. Do not stay stuck in something that you already know. As you evolve, the practice functions at a higher level as well."

Yoga Tips – How To Make The Body Cooperate?

Sadhguru tells us that every body is the way it is, and will behave a certain way, because of the karmic information that it has. You may notice that in certain asanas, the body does not bend. Sadhsguru says - "If you pay close attention to the body, you will see, in certain parts of the body, there is no experience, no sensation. There are blocks or gaps in the sensory process because of your karmic structure. Do not pay attention to such gaps. You cannot consciously fix them. Your effort should just be to create a conducive atmosphere within you. When you have done everything that you can do, just wait, without counting the time."

You should never breathe through your mouth when doing yoga asanas. You should always breathe through your nasal passage. When doing asanas, don't push yourself to a point where you have to breathe through your mouth. You should breathe slightly deeper than normal. Sadhguru says - "If you remain in the full posture for one minute and there is no aberration in your breath or your pulse rate, it means your body is coming to ease. If it comes to such a state of ease, there will be no dis-ease".

Yoga Tips – Don’t Drink Water Between Your Practices

Yoga increases ushna (heat) in the body. If you drink cold water between your practices, this will fall and cause various other reactions in the system. Your system will become susceptible to allergies and excess mucous. You should also not go to the washroom in between your practices. You should work out the water in the form of sweat. The level of purification is much higher when the water comes out as sweat.
