For people living in family situations, it would be best if you can dedicate a separate space for your yoga practices. A space which is not used for any other purposes. A cared-for space, where you light a lamp everyday, keep fresh flower will provide a significant support. Sadhguru says - "In this way, you can create a cocoon of energy". Sadhguru also guides on the best cloth to use to keep yantra, or picture, and also on how to cover the walls.
Sadhguru tells us that as a young boy, it was some task to wake him up. But once, he started practicing Suryakriya, within a few months, everyday he would come awake around 3.30am on his own. He explains, that as the sun comes up on the horizon, around 3.20am - 4.00am, the sun's energies start reaching us. He says - "As far as we are concerned, in this solar system, the fundamental source of our energy and creation is the sun. The moment the brahma muhurta starts, your body wakes up by itself in a deep way within yourself". He also explains what kriyas are all about.
Instead of trying to focus, you should deepen your involvement. Sadhguru says - "If you are deeply involved in something, focus naturally comes. Where there is no involvement, if you try to bring focus, it will be torture; focus will not come". Sadhguru explains this aspect with two examples, text books and falling for the neighborhood girl!
In context of Shambhavi Mahamudra practice, Sadhguru says - "The practice is set for wellbeing, but your idea of wellbeing still matters. Your idea of wellbeing may just be a little better health and success in what you are doing, and you think that is it. That is why I am saying, “Don’t set a goal – let it evolve.” Let it evolve to a place that you could not imagine. Do not stay stuck in something that you already know. As you evolve, the practice functions at a higher level as well."
In response to a question that what can I do when asthma is becoming a hindrance in my spiritual pursuit - Sadhguru says, that it is very important to keep the body healthy. Otherwise, it will take away all your attention. In terms of your choice of living in the city, Sadhguru says - "You must do your life where it happens best for you, not because you can live better than somebody somewhere or because you will make a few bucks more somewhere else."
One should not wear socks when practicing yoga. In many postures, your heels and big toes need to actually touch. Sadhguru tells us that when doing yoga, it is very important to be in touch with the earth. He says - "If you can afford to do this, for maximum impact in hatha yoga, you must make a space with packed mud, clay, and use either a raw silk or cotton cloth – raw cotton, not sanforized – and do yoga on that". Also, it is best to use cotton mat or raw silk mat when practicing yoga.
Sadhguru tells us that every body is the way it is, and will behave a certain way, because of the karmic information that it has. You may notice that in certain asanas, the body does not bend. Sadhsguru says - "If you pay close attention to the body, you will see, in certain parts of the body, there is no experience, no sensation. There are blocks or gaps in the sensory process because of your karmic structure. Do not pay attention to such gaps. You cannot consciously fix them. Your effort should just be to create a conducive atmosphere within you. When you have done everything that you can do, just wait, without counting the time."
The best time to do the practice would be during the twilight or transition perdiods, the sandhya kalas (sunrise, noon and sunset). Also, because the yoga practices generate a certain ushna (heat) within the system, the practices should be done either before 8:30am or after 4:30pm. Sadhguru says "The Brahma Muhurta is the best time for you to do practices if you want to transcend your physical nature or know dimensions that we refer to as spiritual" (Brahma muhurtam is from 3:40am - 4:20am)
Most people use only about 20% if their lung capacity. As your lung capacity expands, the number of breaths per minute will come down. As you continue practicing classical yoga, your breath will become slow. As your breath becomes slow, your perception will enhance. Sadhguru says "You will start understanding what people around you are saying. You will understand the language of other creatures, the language of the planet, and the very language of the source of creation."
You should never breathe through your mouth when doing yoga asanas. You should always breathe through your nasal passage. When doing asanas, don't push yourself to a point where you have to breathe through your mouth. You should breathe slightly deeper than normal. Sadhguru says - "If you remain in the full posture for one minute and there is no aberration in your breath or your pulse rate, it means your body is coming to ease. If it comes to such a state of ease, there will be no dis-ease".
Yoga increases ushna (heat) in the body. If you drink cold water between your practices, this will fall and cause various other reactions in the system. Your system will become susceptible to allergies and excess mucous. You should also not go to the washroom in between your practices. You should work out the water in the form of sweat. The level of purification is much higher when the water comes out as sweat.
If you want to be healthy, it is essential that your colon is clean. If you do Hatha Yoga, you must make sure that you are not only on an empty stomach, but your bowels are also clear. If you want your energies to move upwards, then anything that is not naturally part of your system should be out. Only water is fine.
Sadhguru tells us that when he did yoga as a young boy, they used to wear only a small loincloth. Traditionally in India people did not wear stitched cloth, so that the movement of energy does not get restricted. When practicing yoga, you should not wear synthetic clothing, the kind that athletes wear. It would be best to wear organic clothing - organic cotton, or raw silk. Also, before doing yoga practices, you should remove all objects from your body, especially metal.
Sadhguru gives a few tips and guidelines to follow to make the most out of your yoga practices. #1 Closed eyes - When doing asanas, keep your eyes closed; #2 Empty Stomach - While practicing asanas, you should be on an empty stomach; #3 Cold Water Dip; #4 Frequeny Of Practices; #5 Using Mirrors / Listening to Music - never use mirror or music when practicing; #6 Speaking - never speak when practicing.
