Sadhguru says that the root cause of all chronic ailments is in the energy body. Disturbance in the energy body can be caused because of various factors - food, relationships, atmosphere, emotions, attitudes, thoughts and opinions. Sadhguru says - "The basic premise in Yoga is that if your energy body is in full flow and properly balanced, there can be no chronic disease either in your physical body or your mental body. If people are willing to do a certain amount of sadhana to balance and activate their energy body, they can definitely be free of all chronic ailments."
Time and Energy - these are the two fundamental ingredient of life. Time is running at the same pace for everyone, but you can manage the energy. You want your time to be over, before your energies. If the energies get over before your time, then these lead to various conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia etc. In the human physiology spine is very significant. It is very easy to regenerate and rejuvenate the cells in the spine and brain.
Raghu Rai, celebrated and renowned Indian photographer and photojournalist made one of the biggest coffee-table photo books, “Sadhguru”. In this article, Sadhguru tells us the significance of aligning one's own geometry with the cosmic geometry. The nature of a yogi is that he becomes geometrically conscious. Raghu was able to capture this aspect in some of the photographs, making these still pictures exhibiting a video effect - movement in stillness!
Sadhguru tells us that kriya means internal action, sound or music is an external action. So, for most people, sound or music is karma not kriya. But music can be transformed into kriya. It depends on the quality of the listener. If one's listening becomes very keen, then the listening is not just limited to the eardrums, every cell in the body can reverberate. Sadhguru says - "If your whole body can listen, what is just entertainment can become kriya yoga for sure."
In Yoga, God is not seen as a creator, but as an ultimate flowering. Sadhguru says - "The whole science of yoga, the whole process that we are referring to as spirituality is just a question of good gardening – nurturing the seed so that it will become a flower."
Chemotherapy, is a calculated risk, a choice between damage and death. Though now the science of chemotherapy is much advanced, still there are side effects, and the rejuvenation process of the body is seriously affected. Sadhguru says - "After the chemo period is over, the main thing is the cell multiplication should be brought back to normal. For recovery from the effects of chemo, the elemental processes (like bhuta shiddhi) that we do can be of immense value and people can regain their rejuvenation process very effectively."
Angamardana is a system of dynamic asanas that invigorate the body on all levels. Sadhguru looks at how Angamardana builds resilience and strengthens the fundamental fabric of the body. Sadhguru says - "If strength and resilience is what you are looking for, you need to strengthen the fundamental fabric of the body. This is what Angamardana does."
One should not wear socks when practicing yoga. In many postures, your heels and big toes need to actually touch. Sadhguru tells us that when doing yoga, it is very important to be in touch with the earth. He says - "If you can afford to do this, for maximum impact in hatha yoga, you must make a space with packed mud, clay, and use either a raw silk or cotton cloth – raw cotton, not sanforized – and do yoga on that". Also, it is best to use cotton mat or raw silk mat when practicing yoga.
In the Indian culture the rules that govern life are called as dharma. Dharma means law, not religion as it is commonly misunderstood. People observed these laws, laws that govern the universe, our nature and the process of creation. There is a geometrical basis for everything physical. If you are not aligned to this geometry, there will be friction within you - pain and suffering, anxiety, tension, stress, misery. So, yoga instructions are not new rules, these are ways in which the body will function to its maximum efficiency.
Many parents wonder what is the best way to introduce yoga to children. So, what is the right age to introduce yoga to children? Sadhguru says - "Seven years is generally considered a good age." In response to what kind of yoga should be taught to children, Sadhguru says - "There are simple forms of yoga that children can do after six or seven years of age. But it is very important that certain practices are not taught to them." Sadhguru says, children can start with Upa Yoga, Nada Yoga and Yoga Namaskar.
Today, medical science has proven that chemicals can create pleasant and unpleasant experience within you. In yogic physiology, pineal gland is associated with the agna chakra. If you have sufficient and stable pineal secretions, you will always be pleasant within yourself. Sadhguru tells about a certain bindu, a spot on the pineal gland, and its significance. In yoga, the initial phase of practice is towards stability.
There are certain asanas which are preparatory in nature, called sadhana pada. Some are tools for transformation, called kaivalya pada. The first 21 asanas are geared towards preparing the system to take enhanced levels of energies. Sadhguru says - "A lot of the eighty-four asanas are aimed towards enhancing your energies. Before you boost your energy in a big way, a certain amount of preparation, expansion, and transparence needs to happen to ensure the body and the mind will be able to take it."
Sadhguru says, "Bandhas are employed to gain control of your energy system". An important aspect of yoga is to gain control over the energy body and the mental body. Only when the physical body, mental body and energy body are properly aligned, your actions will be smooth, easy and effortless. Once you are able to use your energy body, the way you use your physical body, then there is no limit in terms of experience and exploration.
Sadhguru says, that spine is very subtle, made of 33 pieces of bone, and it is designed to support a certain amount of weight. The spine is like the suspension of a car. And, if we look at the body in two halves, the lower part weighs more than the upper part. So, when one does any upside down posture, there is very high weight on the spine. Because of this, after doing such asana, it is important to flex the spine back to its natural state. That is the significance of spinal twists postures.
Yoga is misunderstood, especially in the west, as twisting the body into impossible postures. Sadhguru says, that in Patanjali's yoga sutras, which form the bedrock of modern yoga, only one sutra is dedicated to asanas, thiram sukham asanam. Asanas are only for preparation, they are not the whole yoga. There are other dimensions to yoga. Sadhguru says "Yoga is a tool to find ultimate expression to life. Every human being must explore and know this".
Sadhguru says, in the state you are right now, there is still need for action. Someone who doesn't know intense action, can not move into inaction. So, choose the action that you want to do - either to rule the world, or to serve the world. And do it with absolute intensity. Sadhguru narrates a beautiful story of a Zen master - "No Work, No Food".
The best time to do the practice would be during the twilight or transition perdiods, the sandhya kalas (sunrise, noon and sunset). Also, because the yoga practices generate a certain ushna (heat) within the system, the practices should be done either before 8:30am or after 4:30pm. Sadhguru says "The Brahma Muhurta is the best time for you to do practices if you want to transcend your physical nature or know dimensions that we refer to as spiritual" (Brahma muhurtam is from 3:40am - 4:20am)
Most people use only about 20% if their lung capacity. As your lung capacity expands, the number of breaths per minute will come down. As you continue practicing classical yoga, your breath will become slow. As your breath becomes slow, your perception will enhance. Sadhguru says "You will start understanding what people around you are saying. You will understand the language of other creatures, the language of the planet, and the very language of the source of creation."
In the yogic culture, kundalini is symbolized by snake. Kundalini is energy within you what has not manifest. If one's kundalini is aroused, miraculous things will happen to them. It will also significantly enhance their perception. Before activating the kundalini, it is very essential that the body and mind have been sufficiently prepared. Kundalini yoga is the most dangerous form of yoga. Pumping up of energy without necessary preparation, and proper guidance, should not be attempted.
The yogic system has identified 84 postures through which the body and mind can be transformed. The body is a manifestation of various levels of compulsions. Yogasanas mean - that you are taking charge of your life. To achieve this, needs a certain level of commitment. Sadhguru says - "The 84 yogasanas represent 84 alignments, because existence as we know it now is seen as the 84th creation". Sadhguru also tells us about the spiritual dimension of practicing yogasanas.
Sadhguru says that usually what we consider as a problem of memory, is actually not a problem of memory, but of clarity. Everything that we perceive through the five sense organs is always recorded. The problem is only when you want to retrieve it. So, its not the memory, its clarity that one needs to work upon. A simple way of enhancing clarity is to do everything with precision. Hatha Yoga is all about precision. Once you bring precision into your activity, there will be precision in the mind. Sadhguru also gives a technique to enhance this process further.
Sadhguru says, that there was a time when emotion was the most dominant part of a human being. It is not so now, but still it is the most intense part. People can not sustain intensity in their body, mind or energies. But emotions can get very intense. Bhakti yoga uses the intensity of emotion to reach the ultimate. Bhakti yoga, or devotion, is a multiplied or enhanced form of love affair. Sadhguru says, you can not practice devotion, but one can do certain things to naturally become a devotee.
Yoga means union. Today modern science has proved that the whole existence is one energy. If you break the illusion of separateness, and experience life as one whole - that is yoga. Hatha Yoga uses the body postures to move energy in a certain way, in specific directions, to lead one to experience this wholeness. In Hatha, "ha" means sun, and "ta" means moon, so Hatha yoga is to bring a balance between the sun and moon (or Ida and Pingala, the left and the right) within the system.
You should never breathe through your mouth when doing yoga asanas. You should always breathe through your nasal passage. When doing asanas, don't push yourself to a point where you have to breathe through your mouth. You should breathe slightly deeper than normal. Sadhguru says - "If you remain in the full posture for one minute and there is no aberration in your breath or your pulse rate, it means your body is coming to ease. If it comes to such a state of ease, there will be no dis-ease".
Kriya means internal action. So, it is not on the level of your body and mind, it is on the level of your energies. Body, and mind are not reliable - they can be influenced easily. But, when you work on your energies, you will experience a different depth to life. Kriya yoga is a very powerful way, but also very demanding. It is not for those who are constantly seeking comfort. Kriya yoga is a path for those who want to do things beyond realization. This is for those who want to know the mechanics of life making.
Patanjali was an enlightened being of a great intellect. His mastery of language, mathematics and perception of astronomy was fantastic. Patanjali is regarded as the father of modern day yoga. He did not invent yoga, yoga was first transmitted by Adiyogi to the saptarishis. Patanjali, who came later, saw that it was getting too diversified, and he assimilated everything into the form of sutras (formulas). Sadhguru tells that deliberately he wrote the sutras in a certain way, so that it does not interest the scholars, and are of interest only to those who are exploring consciousness.
Yoga increases ushna (heat) in the body. If you drink cold water between your practices, this will fall and cause various other reactions in the system. Your system will become susceptible to allergies and excess mucous. You should also not go to the washroom in between your practices. You should work out the water in the form of sweat. The level of purification is much higher when the water comes out as sweat.
Karma Yoga has been misunderstood as service. It is not that. Yoga does not need karma, yoga is to go beyond karma. But right now, you need some activity - that is why the crutch of karma yoga. It is needed to manage your awareness. Karma yoga is to joyfully involve yourself in any activity. Sadhguru says - "To do something which does not mean anything to you but with total involvement is what breaks the karmic structure".
If you want to be healthy, it is essential that your colon is clean. If you do Hatha Yoga, you must make sure that you are not only on an empty stomach, but your bowels are also clear. If you want your energies to move upwards, then anything that is not naturally part of your system should be out. Only water is fine.
Sadhguru tells us that when he did yoga as a young boy, they used to wear only a small loincloth. Traditionally in India people did not wear stitched cloth, so that the movement of energy does not get restricted. When practicing yoga, you should not wear synthetic clothing, the kind that athletes wear. It would be best to wear organic clothing - organic cotton, or raw silk. Also, before doing yoga practices, you should remove all objects from your body, especially metal.
In this article Sadhguru dispels the misconceptions around tantra yoga. It is a total misinterpretation in the west, that tantra yoga means uninhibited sex. "Tantra", means technology. It is a technology to go beyond the compulsiveness of the body and mind. Tantra yoga is not to fulfill your sexual needs. Sadhguru says - "Unlike sexuality, which tends to find release at the lower level of the energy system, tantra is about building our energies to the fountain-head of the uppermost dimension of the energy system". Tantra yoga, has two paths, a cruder left-hand tantra, and a more refined, right-hand tantra.
Suryakriya is a powerful process of activating the sun within oneself. Sadhguru says - "If you are in tune with the cycles of the sun, then physical health, wellbeing, vitality, energy, these things you don’t have to bother about – they are just there with you."
In the Indian languages, the word upayoga means, 'that which is useful'. Upa Yoga, is sub-yoga or semi-yoga. Yoga is for a committed practitioner, who wants to attain the the ultimate. Upa Yoga is for someone who doesn't yet have the inclinations for that. Upa Yoga is a system of yoga that is oriented more towards the physical, and not strongly towards the spiritual. Upa Yoga is a good for beginners, for people to start yoga.
Sadhguru gives a few tips and guidelines to follow to make the most out of your yoga practices. #1 Closed eyes - When doing asanas, keep your eyes closed; #2 Empty Stomach - While practicing asanas, you should be on an empty stomach; #3 Cold Water Dip; #4 Frequeny Of Practices; #5 Using Mirrors / Listening to Music - never use mirror or music when practicing; #6 Speaking - never speak when practicing.
Gnana means "to know". To pursue gnana yoga, you must have a very sharp and alert intellect. It should be razor sharp, to a point where it does not miss anything, but it is not influenced by anything happening around it. Sadhguru says - “What I know, I know. What I do not know, I do not know.” This is gnana.
The four realities in your life are - body, mind, emotion and energy. The four paths of yoga are around these four realities of your existence. If you use your emotions to reach your ultimate nature, that is bhakti yoga. If you use your mind, that is gnana yoga. If you use your body, physical action, that is karma yoga. And if you use your energies, that is kriya yoga. On a spiritual path, why so much significance is given to a live guru, is because, he can mix these in the right proportion for you. What works for one person, may not work for the other. These four dimensions have to work together.
Sadhguru says, once we attach the word 'yoga' to anything, it means that it is a complete path by itself. What yoga means is to move towards an experiential reality, where one knows the ultimate nature of existence, the way it is. Yoga refers to union - not as an idea or philosophy or as a concept, but as an experiential reality.
