What is Yoga? Yoga is not body twisting postures

Transcript: Now what yoga means is, the boundaries that we have drawn with the instrument of body and mind, you consciously obliterate. So that when you sit here, your experience of life is not contained just to the limitations of your body, or your thinking process, or your emotional process. Your ability to experience life as a life, not as a body. Because if you experience this life as a body, this is me, that...

... is you, there is no way to mix this. If you go as a mind or a thought process, this is me, that is you, no way to mix it up. But if you go as a life, fundamental life process, there is no distinction between this and that. Not just between two human beings, between everything and everything. There is no distinction. So the word yoga means union. That you consciously obliterated the boundaries of your individuality. That is why you know a sense of union. We are anyway in union with the existence. The problem is, it's not in our experience because we are too caught up with our individual experience. What yoga means is, you stretch the boundaries of your sensations. As there is a physical body, there is a sensory body. If your sensory body expands, let us say your sensory body became as large as this hall, then you will experience all these people as a part of yourself. As you experience the five fingers as yourself, you will experience all these people as yourself. Even for a moment, if you experience all these people as a part of yourself, after that do I have to teach you morals, ethics, be good to this person, don't kill this person, don't harm this person. Would you need teachings, I'm asking? This is what yoga means. It is not a teaching, it is not a philosophy, it is not an ideology. It is a technology of obliterating the boundaries of your individuality.

What is samadhi? | Sadhguru in Conversation with Anupam Kher | #7

Synopsis: Your book ‘Mystics Musings’, which I read many years ago when I lost my younger brother. It was a great tragedy in the family and something that I was finding difficult to cope with. It gave me a great amount of courage and made me feel much better. Also it talked a lot about spirits, it talked a lot about life being a continuous process. In that, you write about...

And I totally understand why Sadhguru says about not doing yoga in tight clothing. And it’s profound, the experience of it. And so I’m wondering if you can create that in North America?

Which is the best material for yoga mat?

Transcript: Above all, when you're doing yoga, your first relationship of being one is with the earth. To be in touch with the earth is important. A proper yogi means, for Hatha Yoga, if you can afford to do this, you must make a room with packed mud. With packed clay. And on top of it you put either a raw silk cloth or a cotton cloth. A raw, cotton cloth not sanforized. And you do yoga on that for maximum impact...

... because this body, you might have forgotten, but the body knows that it's just a piece of the planet. Always it knows. When you practice yoga, you want that to become a conscious and a living process for you so that you experience yourself as one with the earth on which you're living. So using rubber mats for yoga, I know there are Isha branded rubber mats. I look at it with great pain. But they say Sadhguru, cotton mats get dirty. Who's going to wash them? In America they don't know how to wash them, so we made the rubber mats. But this is, Sadhguru this is some special material which really insulates you. This is what I'm asking you, when I asked you the first question. Are you here to experience life or torch life? Unknowingly you're doing it in so many ways as to how to insulate yourself from life. If you, you might already know this, it's all over the place these days. 90% of your body is bacteria. You know this? That means you're only 10% occupied of this building. This construction you have, only 10% is yours. 90% is microbes. They're constantly in and out. They're not just here. If you isolate this, that itself is sickness. That itself is sickness. If you insulate this from the rest of the world, you will become, the potential of who you are is being lowered continuously. So if you're a homebound person, that means every day you wake up in the same place. Now largely if it is so, it's best you use a cotton mat for your yoga or a raw silk mat, not a plastic thing. That is for people who roll it up and go and do it in central park because they want everybody to see they're doing yoga. If you're doing proper yoga, Hatha Yoga, you must be connected with earth. Organic material so that there's no break.

One day the whole world will do yoga

Transcript: Thousands of years ago, when Adiyogi looked at or, transmitted the tools of transformation, which got labelled as yoga. When this was transmitted, Adiyogi firmly believed that one day the entire world will take to it. There are scraps of information here and there of him talking about how every human being, someday, will evolve to take on to some tools of yoga. When they asked why so many, do we need...

... so many? One, two, three would be enough. Why do we need so many? He said the entire world will take to it so many are needed. Not everybody will like the same thing. Somebody would like to do it this way, somebody would like to do it that way, so all these are needed. The initial teachers, or the first teachers, of this, of this science. The Sapta Rishis obviously express doubt. We have not even seen those people, we don't know who they are in strange lands, we don't know what kind they are, will they all take to this? He said your business is to plant the seeds. One seed can turn the earth green, entire earth green. It has the potency. Your business is to keep the potency of the seed. When the weather is right, it will turn green. By the end of May, those of you who live through May here, you are beginning to think the end of the world is coming. Yes? It's beginning to feel like everything is going to wilt and die in this heat. See. When the weather changes, everything bursts back into life. Every time the seasons happen, it's like this. In temperate climates it's far more dramatic. In the winter months, if you look out, it looks like end of the world. Looks like, if you don't know seasons change, and if you look around, you think the world is going to come to an end. Not a single leaf, not a spot of green, everything has gone. But as the ice melts and spring comes on, life bursts forth. So Adiyogi said, your business is not to teach yoga to everybody, your business is to keep the potency of the seed. You keep the seed pure and strong. When the weather is right, it will happen.

So, Sadhguru, I think my question to you after knowing you for a bit, and also you’ve been talking about life continuing in death. The question, I suppose is, how much time do we really have? And, of course, why isn’t it there in my experience? Because every morning when I get up, I’m like ya, I’ve got time and I can get to yoga one day or the other. And still be able to make it. But, the reality seems to be that, you know, there is not much time.
