Is technology a boon or a curse for the youth?

The following is an unedited transcript of Sadhguru's video. For better readability, breaks and highlights have been added by the editors.

Imtiaz Ali: Namaste. My name is Imtiaz Ali, and my question is that today’s youth have a lot of gadgets. Are these gadgets distracting them from reaching their passions? or are they helping them fulfil their passions?

Sadhguru: Namaskaram Imtiaz. I am sure you are using the gadgets in a positive way in your film making. How much technology has made ease of shooting, and production and everything. I am not a film maker. I am in a spiritual world. But I am telling you, these gadgets have changed my life, in many ways. I remember the day when we had to use that black phone to make calls, and today our ability to communicate is so fantastic. Never before in the history of humanity we had this ability to communicate with each other. Let us never ever think this is a problem.

Are our youth getting distracting by the gadgets? Those who are distracted, they will always be distracted, by something or the other. Maybe they were busy getting distracted with what is local, now their distraction is global. But the problem is of compulsiveness.

Technology is a great facilitator. It can never be against us, if it is in the right hands

We have to bring this into our youth, into our children and the adults also. That we don’t conduct this life compulsively, but we bring a certain dimension of a conscious way of functioning. How we eat, how we sit, how we stand, how we function. Everything – if it becomes conscious, our use of gadgets also will become a conscious process.

Technology is a great facilitator. It can never be against us, if it is in the right hands. So what we need to train is the hands that use it, not to tame the technology. Let the technology go unbridled. It’s we human beings who have to know how much of what to do. For this we need a conscious approach to life. Not just with the use of technology but with every aspect of life. How we breathe, how we walk, how we sit, how we stand – if this becomes a conscious process, then technology is a great boon. Everybody can use it to enhance their work, whatever they are doing. I’m sure you’re enjoying the benefits of technology in filmmaking. And as I said earlier, I am enjoying the benefits of technology even as a spiritual teacher.

I must tell you this, many great beings have come on this planet – a Rama, a Krishna, a Budha, Jesus, so many have come – but when they spoke, hardly 10 people or 50 people could hear. But today I can sit here and speak to the whole world! So, how can I complain about technology. I am sure the same is true for the film maker.

So, let us make our youth into a conscious living force. Not complaining about the wonderful miracles that technology is offering to us.
